MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Impact The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | The attacker must be able to deliver email to a mailbox hosted on a vulnerable OX Dovecot instance - standard mail delivery capability, requiring no authentication to the IMAP server itself. Exploitation is triggered when a THREAD-capable IMAP mail client issues the THREAD command against the poisoned mailbox; most modern IMAP clients (Thunderbird, Apple Mail, Outlook via IMAP) issue THREAD automatically as part of normal folder synchronization, making the UI:R barrier low in typical deployments. Servers where the IMAP THREAD extension is explicitly disabled, or deployments where no connected clients use THREAD, are not exploitable. This vulnerability is independent of CVE-2026-40014 and is not mitigated by that patch. Exploitation is bounded to availability impact against the affected mailbox and IMAP service; no credential, data, or integrity compromise is possible through this vector. |
| Impact | The CVSS 6.5 medium score is well-calibrated for this vulnerability. The attack is network-delivered with low complexity and no attacker authentication required (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N), but it critically requires a mail client to issue the IMAP THREAD command against the poisoned mailbox (UI:R), which is the primary real-world throttle on impact. In environments where clients routinely use THREAD - standard behavior in most modern IMAP clients - the UI:R barrier is low. Impact is availability-only (A:H), with no confidentiality or integrity exposure. No CISA KEV listing and no public exploits are identified, placing exploitation probability in the low-to-moderate range. The separation from CVE-2026-40014 is a meaningful operational signal: organizations that patched the prior issue should not assume this attack surface is closed. Real-world impact is bounded to IMAP service degradation per affected mailbox rather than mass system compromise, but repeated poisoning across many mailboxes could constitute a sustained multi-user DoS. EPSS data is not available in current input. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker sends one or more emails to a target user with message headers - such as References or In-Reply-To - whose values are carefully chosen to collide in Dovecot's internal hash table. The messages appear ordinary and are delivered without any special privileges. When the victim's IMAP client (or any client connected to that mailbox) subsequently issues a THREAD command - a routine operation performed automatically by most modern clients when displaying a mailbox - Dovecot enters a pathological CPU-intensive state processing the colliding hash entries, degrading or denying IMAP service for that user or the broader server. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Aug 28, 2026
OX Dovecot Pro and OX Dovecot CE are susceptible to a hash-collision denial-of-service attack where an attacker who can deliver mail to a target user can craft message headers engineered to collide in an internal hash table, causing the IMAP THREAD command to consume CPU disproportionate to message size. Any mail client issuing THREAD against the poisoned mailbox triggers sustained CPU exhaustion, degrading or denying IMAP service. This is a distinct issue from CVE-2026-40014 and is not resolved by that fix; no public exploit is identified at time of analysis.
RemediationAI
Update to a non-vulnerable version of OX Dovecot Pro or OX Dovecot CE as directed by the vendor advisory at https://documentation.open-xchange.com/dovecot/security/advisories/csaf/2026/oxdc-adv-2026-0003.json; the exact patched version number is not independently confirmed from available data and should be obtained directly from the advisory. Until a patch is applied, administrators should monitor IMAP worker processes for abnormal CPU spikes, terminate offending Dovecot processes consuming disproportionate CPU, and manually remove crafted messages from the affected mailbox - the vendor explicitly endorses these as interim controls. Disabling the IMAP THREAD capability server-wide would eliminate the attack surface entirely but will break conversation threading in IMAP clients that depend on it. Inbound mail filtering for anomalous References or In-Reply-To header patterns is a possible upstream mitigant but is complex to tune without false positives. Restricting who can deliver mail to sensitive mailboxes (e.g., allowlisting senders) reduces the attacker's ability to introduce poisoned messages.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Dovecot is a widely used open-source IMAP/POP3 server; OX Dovecot Pro and CE are Open-Xchange's commercially supported and community distributions. The IMAP THREAD extension (RFC 5256) groups messages into conversation threads using header fields such as References and In-Reply-To. Internally, Dovecot indexes these values in a hash table. The vulnerability (CWE-400, Uncontrolled Resource Consumption) is a classic algorithmic complexity / hash-flooding attack: an adversary selects header values that deliberately share the same hash bucket, degrading lookups from O(1) average-case to O(n) or worse worst-case, causing CPU time to grow far beyond what message size would predict. Both commercial (cpe:2.3:a:open_xchange_gmbh:ox_dovecot_pro:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*) and community (cpe:2.3:a:open_xchange_gmbh:ox_dovecot_ce:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*) editions are confirmed affected.

1DescriptionCVE.org
An attacker that can send mail to a user can craft a message header whose values are chosen to collide in an internal hash table, which makes the IMAP THREAD command consume CPU disproportionate to the size of the message. This is a separate issue from CVE-2026-40014 and is not addressed by that fix. Whenever a mail client issues a THREAD command on the affected mailbox, this can cause degradation or denial of service for IMAP. Monitor system for abnormal CPU usage, kill the offending process and remove the offending message from the affected mailbox. Update to non-vulnerable version. No publicly available exploits are known.
