Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires all of the following conditions simultaneously: (1) the target application uses Spring Cloud Stream with the Avro binder component enabled - deployments using JSON, Protobuf, or other serializers are not affected; (2) the attacker must hold high-privilege access (PR:H per CVSS), meaning they must be authenticated with elevated rights over the messaging infrastructure or application configuration; (3) high attack complexity (AC:H) implies specific timing or sequencing conditions must be met; (4) user interaction (UI:R) is required, meaning a legitimate privileged user must take some action to trigger the flawed code path. The absence of any of these conditions prevents exploitation. Non-Avro deployments of Spring Cloud Stream are not affected.

Impact

The overall risk is low. The CVSS 3.1 base score of 3.1 reflects a combination of high attack complexity (AC:H), high privileges required (PR:H), required user interaction (UI:R), and limited confidentiality and integrity impact (C:L/I:L) with no availability impact. EPSS data is not provided; given the niche conditions required, exploitation probability is expected to be very low - even a mid-sized deployment team responsible for dozens of Spring microservices would face significant barriers to being targeted by this flaw. No CISA KEV listing and no public proof-of-concept code have been identified. The network attack vector (AV:N) is the only signal that might inflate perceived risk; however, the high-privilege and user-interaction prerequisites substantially constrain who can trigger the condition. SSVC signals: exploitation status is none, the vulnerability is not readily automatable due to AC:H and PR:H, and the technical impact is partial. This is a low-priority issue for most organizations - the primary concern is correctness of Avro message pipelines rather than active attacker exploitation.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker or privileged insider with the ability to publish messages to a Spring Cloud Stream Avro-enabled topic, and who can influence a downstream consumer interaction (user interaction required), could craft a sequence of messages that causes the Avro binder to cache and propagate an incorrect content-type header. This could lead to minor information leakage of internal type metadata or cause a consumer to mis-route or mishandle a subsequent message. No public exploit code exists at time of analysis, so exploitation would require custom tooling and deep knowledge of the target's message pipeline.

AnalysisAIv1 – Aug 27, 2026

Improper content-type caching in the Avro component of Spring Cloud Stream can produce incorrect content-type metadata on processed messages, creating a low-severity information-disclosure and data-integrity risk. Affected versions span the 4.2.x, 4.3.x, and 5.0.x release trains. Exploitation requires network access, high privilege level, high attack complexity, and user interaction, making real-world impact minimal; no public exploit code or active exploitation has been identified at time of analysis.

RemediationAI

The primary remediation is to upgrade Spring Cloud Stream to a version outside the affected ranges for each supported train. Consult the vendor advisory at https://spring.io/security/cve-2026-59304 for the exact fixed versions - the input data does not specify patch versions explicitly, so fixed release numbers are not independently confirmed here and should not be inferred. As a compensating control while upgrading, operators using the Avro binder can evaluate disabling Avro schema-based content-type negotiation and relying on explicit per-message content-type headers set by producers, which would bypass the caching code path; however, this may break schema-registry integrations and should be tested in a non-production environment first. No generic network-layer mitigations are effective since the flaw is in application-layer message processing logic.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Spring Cloud Stream (CPE: cpe:2.3:a:spring:spring_cloud_stream:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*) is a VMware/Spring framework for building message-driven microservices over brokers such as Kafka and RabbitMQ. Its Avro binder component integrates Apache Avro binary serialization and must preserve the original MIME content-type header through the message conversion pipeline. The defect is a caching flaw - the component incorrectly retains a previously resolved content-type value rather than re-evaluating it per message or per context, which can cause downstream consumers or schema-registry interactions to receive or act on a stale content-type. No specific CWE has been assigned by NVD; the behavior is closest to CWE-524 (Use of Cache Containing Sensitive Information) or CWE-441 (Unintended Proxy/Intermediary). The Information Disclosure and Integrity tags reflect that stale content-type propagation can expose internal type metadata and cause messages to be misrouted or mis-deserialized.

Attack Technique

Memory corruption occurs when a program writes data beyond the boundaries of allocated memory regions or accesses memory in unintended ways, violating the integrity of the process's address space.

Information disclosure occurs when an application unintentionally exposes sensitive data that aids attackers in reconnaissance or directly compromises security.
