Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires three concrete conditions drawn from the description: (1) automatic string saving must be enabled - this is the default setting; (2) the targeted administrator's WordPress profile locale must be set to a published secondary language configured in TranslatePress, which causes the password-reset URL to be persisted into that language's dictionary table; and (3) a valid, not-yet-consumed administrator password-reset URL must exist in the dictionary at the time of the request. The limiting factors are significant: sites where all admins use the default/primary language, sites without a published secondary language, or sites with automatic string saving disabled are not exploitable, and the reset key must still be valid/unused. Authentication is not required (CVSS PR:N) and no user interaction is needed on the victim side beyond a reset link having been generated.

Impact

The signals point to genuine high priority but with an important reliability caveat. CVSS 3.1 is scored 9.8 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N, C:H/I:H/A:H), i.e. remote, unauthenticated, low-complexity with full impact, and the outcome - capture of an admin password-reset key - leads directly to complete site compromise. However, exploitation is gated by two real preconditions: automatic string saving must be enabled (this is the default) and the targeted administrator's profile locale must be set to a published secondary language (not the default), and there must be a live/valid reset URL sitting in the dictionary. That non-default locale requirement is attacker-independent, which in my view raises real-world attack complexity above the AC:L the NVD vector claims. No EPSS score, KEV entry, or public POC was provided, so there is no evidence of active exploitation yet - the risk is currently theoretical-but-serious rather than mass-exploited. Given the trivial mechanics once conditions are met and the total-takeover payoff, any operator running a vulnerable version with multilingual admin accounts - even a mid-sized municipal IT team - should treat patching as urgent, while recognizing that sites without secondary-language admin locales are unlikely to be exploitable.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker triggers (or waits for) an administrator password reset on a multilingual WordPress site where that admin's locale is a secondary language; the reset link gets stored as a translatable string. The attacker then sends an unauthenticated 'trp_get_translations_regular' AJAX request to admin-ajax.php, reads the returned dictionary entry containing the plaintext reset key and login, and completes the password reset to take over the admin account. No public POC was provided, but the low-complexity network-reachable endpoint makes weaponization straightforward once conditions are met.

AnalysisAIv1 – Aug 26, 2026

Unauthenticated administrator account takeover affects the TranslatePress - Translate Multilingual sites with AI Translation plugin for WordPress in all versions through 3.3.1, where the 'trp_get_translations_regular' AJAX action returns raw translation-dictionary entries without access control. Because an administrator's password-reset URL can be persisted into the secondary-language dictionary as a translatable string, an unauthenticated attacker can read the plaintext reset key and login parameters and seize the admin account. Reported by Wordfence; no public exploit identified at time of analysis, and it is not listed in CISA KEV.

RemediationAI

Upgrade TranslatePress to the first release above 3.3.1 that incorporates the fix in WordPress plugin changeset 3645229 (https://plugins.trac.wordpress.org/changeset/3645229) - an upstream fix is available via that changeset, but a specific tagged patched version is not independently confirmed from the provided data, so verify the current version against the Wordfence advisory (https://www.wordfence.com/threat-intel/vulnerabilities/id/4f4ebf09-b089-4118-a0ee-399243253f9c?source=cve) before deploying. Until patched, the most effective compensating control is to change any administrator whose profile locale is set to a published secondary language back to the site's default/primary language, which removes the condition that persists reset URLs into the secondary-language dictionary (trade-off: those admins lose their localized dashboard). As a further hardening step, disable the plugin's automatic string saving (Settings) to stop new sensitive strings being captured - note this can degrade automatic translation collection and require manual string management - and rotate/invalidate any outstanding admin password-reset requests. Restricting or WAF-filtering unauthenticated access to admin-ajax.php for the 'trp_get_translations_regular' action reduces exposure but may break front-end translation rendering for anonymous visitors.

Technical ContextAI · show details

TranslatePress renders multilingual pages by intercepting output strings and storing them in per-language dictionary tables, then serving translations via AJAX. The 'trp_get_translations_regular' handler (see includes/class-editor-api-regular-strings.php and includes/queries/class-query.php in the 3.3.1 source) reads regular translatable strings out of the secondary-language dictionary. The root cause is CWE-640 (Weak Password Recovery Mechanism): when WordPress emails an administrator a reset link and that admin's profile locale is a published secondary language, the plugin's automatic string-saving path captures the reset URL - including the one-time reset key and user login - as a 'translatable' string and writes it to the dictionary table, from which the unauthenticated AJAX endpoint will return it. The affected package per CPE is cpe:2.3:a:cozmoslabs:translatepress_-_translate_multilingual_sites_with_ai_translation.

DescriptionCVE.org

The TranslatePress - Translate Multilingual sites with AI Translation plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Sensitive Information Exposure in all versions up to, and including, 3.3.1 via the 'trp_get_translations_regular' AJAX action. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to extract the raw administrator password-reset URL - including the plaintext reset key and login parameters stored in the translation dictionary table - enabling full administrator account takeover. This vulnerability is only exploitable when automatic string saving is enabled (the default setting) and the target administrator's profile locale is set to a published secondary language, as these conditions cause the password-reset URL to be persisted as a translatable string in the secondary-language dictionary table.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

The TranslatePress WordPress plugin (versions through 3.3.1) contains an unauthenticated vulnerability allowing attackers to seize administrator accounts by extracting password-reset credentials from translation dictionaries. Any organization running affected versions faces immediate risk of complete website compromise, malware injection, and unauthorized data access without authentication barriers.

Business Impact: Severe
Compensating Controls

No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Interim mitigations if plugin cannot be immediately removed: (1) Restrict unauthenticated access to AJAX endpoints via WAF or .htaccess rules targeting action=trp_get_translations_regular; (2) Implement IP-based access controls limiting WordPress admin endpoints to known internal networks; (3) Enable WordPress security monitoring and alerting for unusual administrator account activity and password-reset requests; (4) Enforce multi-factor authentication for all administrator accounts. These controls mitigate but do not eliminate risk; immediate plugin removal is strongly recommended.
