Exploitation Conditions

Three conditions must all be true simultaneously: (1) the n8n instance must be running with the environment variable N8N_SSRF_PROTECTION_ENABLED=true explicitly set - this is a non-default opt-in flag; (2) the attacker must have an authenticated n8n account with permission to create SearXNG-type credentials; and (3) that same account must have permission to create and configure a personal agent. Exploitation is bounded by the n8n server's network reachability - the attacker can only probe hosts accessible to the n8n process, not arbitrary internet addresses (which would be reachable regardless). Unauthenticated exploitation is not possible based on the PR:L CVSS metric. The irony of the exploitation condition is that instances without SSRF protection enabled (the majority, as it is opt-in) do not expose this specific bypass, though they may have broader SSRF exposure.

Impact

The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N/VC:L/VI:N/VA:N/SC:H/SI:N/SA:N, score 6.3) captures the key tension in this vulnerability: exploitation is network-accessible and low-complexity, but gated behind authenticated low-privilege access (PR:L), which meaningfully limits the attack surface. The SC:H metric for subsequent-system confidentiality reflects the SSRF's ability to expose internal services well beyond n8n itself - cloud metadata APIs (e.g., IMDSv1), internal REST services, and private network hosts. Exploitation is further scoped to instances where SSRF protection has been explicitly enabled, which is a non-default opt-in; operators who have not set N8N_SSRF_PROTECTION_ENABLED=true are not protected by the flag but are also not specifically targeted by this bypass. No EPSS score was provided in the input data, and there is no KEV listing or confirmed POC, suggesting no observed opportunistic exploitation at this time. Real-world priority is moderate: high in multi-tenant n8n deployments or cloud-hosted instances where credential-creation permissions are broadly granted; lower in single-user or tightly permissioned deployments.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An authenticated n8n user with credential-creation rights creates a SearXNG credential and sets the API URL to an internal address - for example, http://169.254.169.254/latest/meta-data/ on an AWS-hosted instance or http://internal-db-service:5432. They attach this credential to a personal agent and initiate a chat session; when the agent invokes the SearXNG tool, the n8n server issues an HTTP request directly to the internal address and streams the response back through the chat output, exposing cloud instance metadata, internal API responses, or service banners. No public exploit identified at time of analysis.

AnalysisAIv1 – Aug 20, 2026

SSRF protection bypass in n8n's SearXNG Agent tool allows authenticated users to reach internal network hosts that the platform's own security controls are supposed to block. Affected versions are n8n before 2.34.1 and 2.33.x before 2.33.4 when deployed with N8N_SSRF_PROTECTION_ENABLED=true. An attacker with permission to create SearXNG credentials and configure a personal agent can point the API URL at internal infrastructure - cloud metadata endpoints, internal APIs, or intranet services - and receive responses directly through the agent chat interface. No public exploit or active exploitation (CISA KEV) identified at time of analysis.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to n8n 2.34.1 (main line) or 2.33.4 (2.33.x maintenance line), which route the SearXNG tool's HTTP requests through n8n's centralized SSRF protection client, closing the bypass. Details are in the vendor advisory at https://github.com/n8n-io/n8n/security/advisories/GHSA-9rp2-wm75-c5fj. If immediate upgrade is not possible, restrict the ability to create SearXNG credentials to fully trusted operators only - reducing the set of users who can supply arbitrary API URLs is the most effective compensating control. Alternatively, consider deploying n8n with network-level egress filtering (e.g., firewall rules blocking n8n's outbound traffic to RFC-1918 ranges and link-local addresses such as 169.254.169.254) as an independent layer that does not depend on n8n's application-level SSRF flag. Note that disabling the SearXNG Agent tool entirely removes the attack surface at the cost of losing that search capability.

Technical ContextAI · show details

n8n is a node-based workflow automation platform (CPE: cpe:2.3:a:n8n-io:n8n). Its SearXNG Agent tool, which allows agents to perform web searches via a user-supplied SearXNG API endpoint, used a raw HTTP client that bypassed the platform's centralized SSRF protection middleware. CWE-918 (Server-Side Request Forgery) describes this root-cause class: the application fetches a user-controlled URL without routing through a validation layer. Normally when N8N_SSRF_PROTECTION_ENABLED=true, n8n's centralized HTTP client filters requests to private/loopback IP ranges before they are sent. The SearXNG tool's use of a separate raw client meant this gate was never consulted, creating a path to internal network resources invisible to the protection mechanism.

DescriptionCVE.org

n8n before 2.34.1 and 2.33.x before 2.33.4 contains an SSRF protection bypass in the SearXNG Agent tool. The tool sent requests to the user-supplied API URL using a raw HTTP client that did not route through n8n's centralized SSRF protection. On instances with N8N_SSRF_PROTECTION_ENABLED=true, an authenticated user with permission to create SearXNG credentials and configure a personal agent could set the API URL to an internal host, causing the n8n server to connect to that host and return the response content through the Agent chat output.
