The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up.

Exploitation Conditions

The target FFmpeg instance must be reading a RIST stream through the async:rist:// URL scheme specifically - it is the async wrapper that supplies librist_read() a buffer smaller than the incoming payload, so plain rist:// usage or non-RIST inputs are not the stated trigger. The attacker must be positioned as the RIST sender (or be able to inject packets into that RIST session) so they control the payload length, and FFmpeg must be built with librist support. The main limiting factor is deployment scope: only broadcast/streaming pipelines that ingest RIST via async:rist:// from untrusted or reachable senders are exposed; the CVSS vector reports PR:N/UI:N, but real exposure depends on this non-default protocol configuration rather than on any FFmpeg install being remotely attackable.

Impact

The supplied CVSS 4.0 vector (9.3, AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VC:H/VI:H/VA:H) rates this critical with full confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact and no attack requirements, consistent with a network-reachable memory-corruption bug. However, real-world reachability is gated by a concrete precondition not captured by the raw score: the target must be consuming an attacker-influenced stream specifically via the async:rist:// scheme, so exposure is limited to deployments that pull or accept RIST streams from untrusted senders rather than arbitrary internet hosts. No EPSS score was provided, and the vulnerability is not in CISA KEV, so there is no evidence of active or widespread exploitation; treat it as a high-priority patch for RIST-ingesting pipelines but not an emergency for the vast majority of FFmpeg deployments that never touch RIST. The absence of a public POC and KEV listing suggests, at most, targeted risk against streaming/broadcast infrastructure; heap overflows are also not always cleanly weaponizable to RCE, so availability (crash/DoS) impact is more assured than reliable code execution.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker operates or hijacks a RIST sender that a victim's transcoding/streaming pipeline pulls from (or accepts) via an async:rist:// URL, then transmits a RIST packet whose payload length exceeds the caller's destination buffer. The oversized copy overflows the heap allocation, crashing the FFmpeg process and potentially corrupting heap structures to steer execution. No public POC is identified at time of analysis, but the low attack complexity and network vector make a crash/DoS outcome readily achievable for anyone able to feed the target a RIST stream.

AnalysisAIv1 – Aug 19, 2026

Heap buffer overflow in FFmpeg's RIST protocol reader (libavformat/librist.c) lets a remote RIST sender corrupt heap memory in any FFmpeg instance ingesting an async:rist:// stream, enabling potential remote code execution or crash. The librist_read() function ignores the caller's buffer size and copies the entire received RIST payload into a destination buffer that the async wrapper sizes smaller than the packet, so an oversized payload writes past the buffer end. Reported by VulnCheck and fixed upstream in commit 1c10bcc; no public exploit is identified at time of analysis and it is not listed in CISA KEV.

RemediationAI

Upstream fix available (PR/commit); released patched version not independently confirmed - apply FFmpeg commit 1c10bcc2e17255dacb717a25ab3db142ce390602 (merged via PR 24089 at https://code.ffmpeg.org/FFmpeg/FFmpeg/pulls/24089) or a distribution build that incorporates it, since the input provides no tagged release number. Where immediate patching is not possible, avoid using the async:rist:// URL scheme and only accept RIST streams from trusted, authenticated senders; the trade-off is losing the async read wrapper's buffering behavior for RIST inputs. As additional compensating controls, restrict inbound RIST/UDP flows at the firewall to known peer addresses and, if RIST is not needed, build or deploy FFmpeg without librist support (--disable-librist) to remove the vulnerable code path entirely, at the cost of RIST protocol functionality. Technical ContextAI · show details

The flaw lives in FFmpeg's librist integration (libavformat/librist.c), which wraps the RIST (Reliable Internet Stream Transport) protocol - a UDP-based low-latency transport built on librist for contribution-grade video over lossy networks. The affected code path is the async wrapper exposed through the async:rist:// URL scheme, which hands librist_read() a bounded intermediate buffer; because librist_read() disregards the passed-in size and instead uses the full length reported for the received payload, it performs an unbounded memcpy-style write. This is a classic CWE-122 heap-based buffer overflow: a length value taken from attacker-controlled network data drives a copy into an allocation sized for the caller's smaller expectation, corrupting adjacent heap metadata and objects. The CPE cpe:2.3:a:ffmpeg:ffmpeg:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* indicates the FFmpeg application/library family broadly rather than a pinned version range.

DescriptionCVE.org

FFmpeg before commit 1c10bcc contains a heap buffer overflow in the RIST protocol reader (libavformat/librist.c). librist_read() ignored its size argument and copied the full received payload length into the caller-provided destination buffer, overflowing it when the payload exceeds the destination size. This is reachable via the async:rist:// URL scheme, where the async wrapper supplies a smaller buffer than the received payload. A remote RIST sender can trigger the overflow by sending a packet whose payload exceeds the caller buffer size.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

FFmpeg's RIST protocol reader contains a heap buffer overflow (CVE-2026-75143, CVSS 9.3) enabling potential remote code execution when processing oversized RIST streams. Organizations ingesting RIST content through FFmpeg face system compromise risk and must prioritize immediate vendor patching to protect media processing infrastructure.

Attack Technique

A buffer overflow occurs when a program writes more data to a memory buffer than it was allocated to hold, causing the excess data to spill into adjacent memory regions.
