| Exploitation Conditions | The affected authentik instance must have an inbound SAML Source configured with the non-default USERNAME_LINK or EMAIL_LINK user-matching mode - the default unique-identifier matching mode is not exploitable, and outbound SAML Provider usage is not affected. The attacker must possess a valid account on the upstream (source) identity provider that authentik trusts, AND must be able to control/set that account's NameID (or a mapped attribute such as email) so it can carry an injected XML comment of the form victim<!--x-->suffix. No authentication to authentik itself and no user interaction from the victim is required (PR:N/UI:N), and the attacker does not need the victim's password or the IdP's signing private key. Limiting factors: exploitation is gated on the non-default matching configuration, on the attacker having an IdP account with attacker-controlled NameID, and on the specific comment-excluding signature canonicalization behavior. |
| Impact | Signals are mostly aligned toward high priority: the CVSS 4.0 base score is 9.4 with network vector, no UI, and no privileges on the target (AV:N/PR:N/UI:N), high confidentiality and integrity impact, and a scope/subsequent-system impact reflecting full account takeover of a federated identity. The one moderating factor is AT:P (attack requirement) plus the explicit precondition that the SAML Source must be configured in the non-default USERNAME_LINK or EMAIL_LINK matching mode - deployments using the default unique-identifier matching are not affected, and authentik's outbound SAML Provider role is not affected, which meaningfully narrows the exploitable population. There is no CISA KEV listing and no EPSS score supplied, and no public exploit was identified, so this is not confirmed as actively exploited; however, the mechanism is simple and fully documented in the public patch and tests, lowering the barrier to weaponization. The provided 'Denial Of Service' tag is inconsistent with the actual impact (identity takeover) and appears to be a mislabel - the description and patch clearly describe authentication bypass/account hijack, not availability loss. Given that this is an identity provider guarding downstream single sign-on, any operator running the affected matching modes should treat it as urgent and patch immediately, while operators on default matching can prioritize slightly lower after verifying their configuration. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker registers or controls a normal account on an upstream SAML identity provider that an authentik instance trusts as an inbound Source configured in USERNAME_LINK mode. The attacker sets their account's NameID to 'victim_username<!--x-->random', logs into authentik via SAML, and the signed assertion validates while authentik matches on the truncated 'victim_username', binding the attacker's external identity to the victim's authentik account and granting full takeover. No public proof-of-concept was identified, but the vendor's regression tests demonstrate the exact truncation behavior. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Aug 18, 2026
Account takeover in authentik (goauthentik) identity provider before 2026.2.6 and 2026.5.5 allows an attacker holding an account on an upstream SAML identity provider to hijack a victim's authentik account. By injecting an XML comment into the SAML NameID (e.g. victim<!--x-->attacker), the value authentik reads for user matching is truncated to the text before the comment while the IdP's signed assertion still validates, because comment-excluding canonicalization (xml-exc-c14n) strips the comment before the signature digest is computed. This binds the attacker's external identity to the victim's existing account without the victim's password or the IdP private key, and the malicious link persists across future logins. No public exploit identified at time of analysis; the flaw is fixed upstream and demonstrated by regression tests in the vendor patch.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade to authentik 2026.2.6 or 2026.5.5 (release tags https://github.com/goauthentik/authentik/releases/tag/version/2026.2.6 and https://github.com/goauthentik/authentik/releases/tag/version/2026.5.5), which change SAML value parsing to read full element text via itertext() (commits 6bd00f09f1f6b5bc5212a10340418fa1b264f02c and 8704a1b89d7bf46bcef0d3c434c821b937fdecc3). If immediate patching is not possible, the most effective compensating control is to switch affected inbound SAML Sources away from USERNAME_LINK/EMAIL_LINK to the default unique-identifier matching mode, which is not vulnerable - the trade-off is that automatic linking to pre-existing local accounts by username/email stops working and users may need re-enrollment or manual linking. As a secondary measure, restrict or audit which upstream identity providers are trusted and review whether users on those IdPs can freely set their own NameID; also audit existing SAML source connections for accounts linked to unexpected external identities, since the malicious binding persists after the initial attack. Technical ContextAI · show details
The root cause is a classic XML interpretation-conflict (CWE-436) between two parsers acting on the same signed SAML document. authentik read the NameID and attribute values using lxml's Element.text, which returns only character data up to the first child node; an embedded XML comment is a child node, so admin<!--x-->_user silently truncates to 'admin'. The SAML signature, however, is verified over an exclusive-comment canonicalization (xml-exc-c14n) that removes comments entirely, so the digest is computed over the full, comment-free string and the signature remains valid. The mismatch - signature validates the whole value, application logic consumes a truncated substring - is the same class of 'SAML comment truncation' issue historically seen in other SAML libraries. The vendor fix (authentik/common/saml/utils.py get_element_text) replaces Element.text with ''.join(element.itertext()) so the matching value equals what was actually signed. Affected component per CPE is cpe:2.3:a:goauthentik:authentik across all versions prior to the fixes.

Lifecycle Timeline
2DescriptionCVE.org
authentik is an open-source identity provider. Prior to 2026.2.6 and 2026.5.5, an inbound SAML Source configured with the non-default USERNAME_LINK or EMAIL_LINK user-matching mode interprets an XML comment in a NameID differently from the identity provider's signed assertion. An attacker with an account on the source identity provider who can set the account's NameID can inject an XML comment that truncates the value used by authentik to the text before the comment while the signed assertion remains valid. A crafted NameID can therefore truncate to a victim's username or email and bind the attacker's external identity to the victim's existing account. This grants full takeover without the victim's password or the identity provider's private key, and the malicious link persists so later logins succeed without the comment. Sources using the default unique-identifier matching mode and authentik's outbound SAML Provider role are not affected. This issue is fixed in versions 2026.2.6 and 2026.5.5.
Executive ViewAI
Account takeover vulnerability in authentik identity provider (CVE-2026-57580) allows authenticated attackers to hijack victim accounts through SAML comment injection attacks. This critical flaw affects all organizations using authentik for identity management, enabling unauthorized access to all downstream systems and applications without requiring victim action or password compromise.
No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Interim mitigations include: restrict SAML authentication to pre-approved upstream identity providers, implement detailed audit logging of SAML assertions and authentication events, require additional verification for sensitive account operations, and monitor SAML NameID values for XML special characters and comment syntax (<!-- and -->).
