Vulnerability Assessment
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires: (1) a Linux system with AMD ACP SoundWire-capable hardware where the snd_acp_sdw_legacy_mach module is loaded; (2) a specific runtime condition where all num_ends entries in the soc_dais array have the initialised flag set, causing the unbounded loop in create_sdw_dailinks() to walk past the allocation. This condition is reached during driver probe (mc_probe) and does not require any user interaction beyond system boot on affected hardware. Exploitation is limited by hardware specificity (AMD ACP SoundWire systems only), the narrow trigger condition (all DAI entries initialized), and the fact that the confirmed primitive is a read-of-size-1 with no demonstrated write capability. Systems without this AMD audio hardware are entirely unaffected regardless of kernel version. |
| Impact | Despite the NVD-assigned CVSS of 8.4 (C:H/I:H/A:H), real-world risk is considerably lower. The EPSS score of 0.17% (6th percentile) reflects this: exploitation is neither widespread nor likely automated. The provided CVSS vector (AV:L/AC:L/PR:N) overstates impact - the C:H/I:H ratings are inconsistent with the confirmed bug being a one-byte slab-out-of-bounds read with no write primitive demonstrated. A read-only OOB in a probe path is unlikely to yield reliable code execution without significant additional development. Denial of service (kernel panic/crash) is the most credible immediate impact. PR:N in the vector is technically debatable: the probe occurs automatically at boot on affected hardware, requiring no user interaction, but exploiting it maliciously would require local presence on a system with AMD SoundWire hardware. The vulnerability is not in CISA KEV and no public exploit code exists. The mismatch between CVSS impact and actual KASAN-confirmed bug behavior should be flagged - the C:H/I:H ratings are not independently confirmed by the description. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | On a system running an unpatched Linux kernel with AMD SoundWire-capable audio hardware, the snd_acp_sdw_legacy_mach module loads during boot. If create_sdw_dailinks() encounters a soc_dais array where every entry has the initialised flag set, the loop reads one byte past the end of the heap allocation. In the worst case, this triggers a kernel panic or yields a byte of adjacent heap memory - potentially leaking kernel addresses or object state useful for further privilege escalation chaining. No public exploit code exists and additional development would be required to turn this into a reliable exploit. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Aug 17, 2026
Out-of-bounds slab read in the Linux kernel's ASoC AMD ACP SoundWire legacy machine driver allows a local attacker - or a hardware-triggered probe path - to read beyond an allocated array in create_sdw_dailinks(), potentially causing kernel memory disclosure or denial of service. The vulnerability is introduced when all DAI link entries are initialized, causing the boundary-unchecked loop to walk past the end of the soc_dais allocation. KASAN confirmed the read-of-size-1 in mc_probe(). EPSS is at 0.17% (6th percentile) and the vulnerability is not listed in CISA KEV; no public exploit has been identified at time of analysis. Fixes are available for Linux stable branches 6.18.40 and 7.1.5, as well as the 7.2-rc1 mainline.
RemediationAI
Update to Linux kernel 6.18.40 or later (stable 6.x series), 7.1.5 or later (stable 7.x series), or 7.2-rc1 or later (mainline), which contain the upstream fix bounding create_sdw_dailinks() iteration to the allocated entry count. Patches are available via the kernel stable repository at https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/1279bdab5fa1f28c168e54215db506e87c6fac1e (6.x), https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/0230471eef5902207516851dcd47c559571dded2 (7.x), and https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/d49ecdf327cc91062d2f80996a163cf65fda1e60 (mainline). If patching is not immediately feasible, blocklisting the snd_acp_sdw_legacy_mach kernel module (modprobe.d blacklist entry) prevents the vulnerable probe path from executing, at the cost of disabling AMD SoundWire audio functionality on affected hardware. KASAN-enabled kernels will surface exploitation attempts as bug reports, which is useful for detection.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The affected component is the ASoC (Audio System on Chip) subsystem's AMD ACP (Audio Co-Processor) SoundWire legacy machine driver, specifically the create_sdw_dailinks() function in snd_acp_sdw_legacy_mach. The driver allocates soc_dais with exactly num_ends entries, then iterates until it finds an entry with the initialised flag cleared. If every allocated entry has initialised set, the loop runs past the end of the heap allocation - a classic slab-out-of-bounds condition (functionally CWE-125, Out-of-bounds Read, despite the field being listed as N/A). KASAN caught a single-byte read past the allocation boundary during mc_probe(). CPE data identifies the affected product as cpe:2.3:a:linux:linux, with vulnerability introduced at commit 2981d9b0789c44b7375e7d599caf71bd843afc9e. The probe path is invoked during driver initialization against AMD SoundWire-capable hardware.

4DescriptionCVE.org
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
ASoC: amd: acp-sdw-legacy: Bound DAI link iteration
create_sdw_dailinks() walks soc_dais until it finds an entry with initialised cleared, but soc_dais is allocated with exactly num_ends entries. If all entries are initialised, the loop reads past the end of the array.
This was reported by KASAN:
BUG: KASAN: slab-out-of-bounds in mc_probe+0x26b3/0x2774 [snd_acp_sdw_legacy_mach] Read of size 1
Pass the allocated entry count to create_sdw_dailinks() and stop before reading past the array.
Executive ViewAI
A high-severity Linux kernel vulnerability (CVE-2026-74333) affecting the audio driver subsystem exposes systems with kernel versions 6.18.x through 6.18.39 and 7.1.x through 7.1.4 to kernel memory disclosure and denial-of-service attacks from local attackers; no public exploit identified at time of analysis. Organizations must immediately identify affected Linux systems and assess exposure in production environments, as this vulnerability poses data breach and availability risks. Vendor-released patches are available and should be deployed within 30 days to eliminate exposure.
Apply vendor patch.
