DescriptionCVE.org

rsync 3.2.0 through 3.2.3 (openssl mode) and rsync-ssl through 3.4.4 (stunnel mode) contain a TLS certificate validation vulnerability that allows on-path attackers to intercept encrypted sessions by presenting self-signed or otherwise invalid certificates. Attackers can exploit the failure to validate server TLS certificates against a trusted CA or verify certificate hostname matching to decrypt or tamper with rsync session content without detection by the client.

AnalysisAI

TLS certificate validation bypass in rsync enables on-path attackers to intercept and tamper with encrypted file transfer sessions. Affected are rsync 3.2.0-3.2.3 in openssl mode and rsync-ssl through 3.4.4 in stunnel mode; both fail to validate server certificates against a trusted CA and perform no hostname verification, allowing a self-signed or otherwise invalid certificate to be accepted silently. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Exploitation is limited to rsync deployments explicitly using TLS protection: rsync 3.2.0-3.2.3 in openssl mode or rsync-ssl through 3.4.4 in stunnel mode - standard non-TLS rsync is entirely unaffected. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:H/AT:N/PR:N/UI:P/VC:H/VI:H/VA:N) accurately captures the threat profile: network-reachable, no privileges required, but high attack complexity reflecting the on-path positioning prerequisite, and a user-interaction requirement corresponding to an active rsync session being initiated. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario An attacker with on-path network access - achieved via ARP spoofing on a shared LAN, a compromised cloud routing peer, or BGP route manipulation - intercepts an outbound rsync-ssl session as a user or automated backup job initiates a transfer. The attacker presents a self-signed certificate; because rsync performs no chain or hostname validation, the TLS handshake completes normally. …
Remediation Upgrade rsync to version 3.5.0, which the rsync project has explicitly designated a major security release to address this and related issues; the release is available at https://github.com/RsyncProject/rsync/releases/tag/v3.5.0, with full details in the NEWS file at https://download.samba.org/pub/rsync/NEWS#3.5.0. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.

Recommended ActionAI

Within 24 hours, enumerate all systems running affected rsync versions (3.2.0-3.2.3 OpenSSL mode or rsync-ssl through 3.4.4 stunnel mode) and document which handle sensitive data transfers. …
