Exploitation Conditions

Three concurrent conditions must hold for exploitation: (1) the DRF view must use AdminRenderer in its renderer_classes, which is active by default in development settings but must be explicitly retained in production; (2) the view must configure asymmetric permissions where the requesting user is permitted to call POST but denied GET on the same view (e.g., via a permission class like PostOnlyPermission as demonstrated in the patched test suite); and (3) the attacker must be authenticated with at least low-privilege credentials sufficient to submit POST requests (CVSS PR:L). The attacker controls the trigger by submitting any payload that fails validation. Exploitation is blocked in production deployments that restrict DEFAULT_RENDERER_CLASSES to JSON-only renderers (e.g., JSONRenderer), as AdminRenderer is never invoked. Scope is limited to the data returned by view.get() for the specific resource - no lateral movement or scope change occurs.

Impact

The CVSS 4.3 Medium score with vector AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N accurately represents the bounded nature of this flaw: confidentiality impact only, no integrity or availability concern, and PR:L reflecting the mandatory authenticated write-access prerequisite. SSVC marks technical impact as partial and automatable as no, consistent with the prerequisite of a specific asymmetric permission configuration not present in all deployments. The vulnerability is not in CISA KEV, and EPSS data is not provided in the available intelligence, so exploitation probability cannot be quantified numerically. In practice, risk is elevated specifically for APIs that intentionally separate read and write access roles (e.g., audit-only accounts, append-only endpoints, or role-separated designs) - a common Django REST Framework pattern. In production environments where AdminRenderer is removed from DEFAULT_RENDERER_CLASSES (standard hardening guidance), the attack surface does not exist. This is a real but narrowly scoped finding, not a broadly critical exposure.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker with a low-privilege account that holds POST but not GET access to a DRF endpoint backed by AdminRenderer deliberately submits a POST request with a payload that fails serializer validation, triggering a 400 Bad Request. The AdminRenderer renders the HTML error page by internally calling view.get() without re-checking permissions, and the attacker receives the full GET resource representation - including data they are explicitly denied read access to - embedded in the 400 response body. SSVC confirms POC-level exploitation capability exists, meaning this attack path has been demonstrated.

AnalysisAIv1 – Aug 11, 2026

AdminRenderer in Django REST Framework prior to 3.17.2 discloses unauthorized GET resource data to authenticated users who hold write-but-not-read permissions on a DRF view. When a POST request fails validation and returns a 400 Bad Request, the renderer internally calls view.get() without first invoking view.check_permissions(), embedding the full GET representation in the HTML error response visible to the requester. No public exploit is confirmed in CISA KEV, but SSVC rates exploitation as POC-level; risk is targeted rather than widespread.

RemediationAI

Upgrade django-rest-framework to version 3.17.2, the vendor-released patch that resolves this issue (https://github.com/encode/django-rest-framework/releases/tag/3.17.2). If an immediate upgrade is not feasible, remove AdminRenderer from renderer_classes on any DRF view that implements asymmetric GET/POST permissions, which eliminates the vulnerable rendering path entirely - note this disables the browsable HTML interface for those views. Alternatively, align GET and POST permission sets so that any user permitted to POST is also permitted to GET, eliminating the data exposure asymmetry; this changes your authorization model and must be validated against application requirements. Auditing DEFAULT_RENDERER_CLASSES in settings.py to confirm AdminRenderer is excluded from production deployments is both a mitigation and a standing security best practice independent of this CVE. The upstream fix is traceable through GitHub PR #10012 and commits 71f81946 and 9e82afc9.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Django REST Framework's AdminRenderer (rest_framework/renderers.py) renders HTML responses for the browsable API. When a write request (POST/PUT/PATCH) returns a 400 validation error, AdminRenderer.render() calls override_method() to simulate a GET context and then directly calls view.get(request, *view.args, **view.kwargs) to populate the current-state display - bypassing view.check_permissions(). The root cause is CWE-200 (Exposure of Sensitive Information to an Unauthorized Actor): the renderer path does not re-authorize the simulated read before returning data. The commit diffs at 71f81946 and 9e82afc9 confirm the fix inserts a view.check_permissions(request) call wrapped in a try/except, falling back to rendering only the error data if the check fails. Affected versions are captured in EUVD-2026-56888 as django-rest-framework < 3.17.2.

DescriptionCVE.org

Django REST framework is a powerful and flexible toolkit for building Web APIs. Prior to 3.17.2, Django REST Framework's rest_framework/renderers.py AdminRenderer.render() uses override_method() to simulate GET and directly invokes view.get() without view.check_permissions() while rendering an invalid write request, allowing a 400 Bad Request HTML response to disclose data from a GET representation that the requester is not permitted to access. This issue is fixed in version 3.17.2.
