AnalysisAIv1 – Jul 20, 2026

TX-completion memory mishandling in the Linux kernel's Intel igc (I225/I226 2.5GbE) driver stems from igc_fpe_init_smd_frame() failing to set the tx-buffer type on SMD (Frame Preemption) frames, so a reused igc_tx_buffer can retain a stale XDP or XSK type and be freed through the wrong cleanup path. This affects local systems running an igc NIC with Frame Preemption active, and the realistic impact is memory corruption or a driver crash rather than remote compromise. No public exploit identified at time of analysis; EPSS is very low (0.17%, 6th percentile) and it is not in CISA KEV, despite the NVD-assigned 9.8 CVSS.

DescriptionCVE.org

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

igc: set tx buffer type for SMD frames

Sashiko pointed out that igc_fpe_init_smd_frame() initializes igc_tx_buffer fields for an SMD skb, but does not set the buffer type: https://sashiko.dev/#/patchset/20260415025226.114115-1-kohei%40enjuk.jp

Since igc_tx_buffer entries are reused, a stale XDP or XSK type can remain and make TX completion use the wrong cleanup path.

Set the buffer type to IGC_TX_BUFFER_TYPE_SKB.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

A CRITICAL vulnerability in Linux kernel's Intel I225/I226 network drivers can cause memory corruption or driver crashes on systems with Frame Preemption active. While a vendor patch is available, actual exploitation risk remains low with no known public exploits or active attacks, making this primarily a system stability and data integrity concern.

Recommended Action

Within 24 hours, inventory Linux systems running Intel igc driver (I225/I226 NICs) with Frame Preemption enabled and assess Frame Preemption deployment scope. Within 7 days, apply the available kernel patch to all affected systems through standard change management. Within 30 days, complete patch rollout across the environment, validate driver stability post-deployment, and document Frame Preemption configuration for future system hardening.

Business Impact: Medium
Compensating Controls

Apply vendor patch.

What every action level means
Emergency Immediate action required. Criteria: CRITICAL + in CISA KEV (actively exploited) without patch, OR CRITICAL + EPSS > 30% without patch, OR CRITICAL + active threat signals without patch.
Act Now Prioritize within 24-48h. Criteria: in KEV with patch available, OR CRITICAL + public POC, OR HIGH + EPSS > 10%, OR CRITICAL + active threat, OR any CRITICAL severity.
This Week Schedule remediation this week. Criteria: HIGH severity (CVSS 7.0-8.9). Patch within normal change window.
This Month Plan within 30 days. Criteria: MEDIUM severity (CVSS 4.0-6.9), lower exploitation probability. Include in regular patch cycle.
Monitor Track and reassess. Criteria: LOW severity (CVSS 0.1-3.9), minimal exploitation risk. No immediate action needed.
