The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up.

Exploitation Conditions

User interaction is required (UI:R per CVSS vector) - the victim must actively open a crafted packet capture file or have Wireshark actively dissecting live Z39.50 traffic on a monitored interface. The attack vector is local (AV:L), meaning the attacker must either place a malicious file on the victim's filesystem or deliver it via phishing/shared storage, or inject malformed Z39.50 packets onto a network segment being passively captured. No authentication or special system privileges are required (PR:N). The Z39.50 dissector must be enabled (it is enabled by default in standard Wireshark installations). Exploitation is bounded by scope:unchanged (S:U) - only the Wireshark process is affected, with no lateral impact to the underlying OS or other applications.

Impact

The CVSS 3.1 vector AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H scores 5.5 (Medium), reflecting that exploitation is local in attack vector, requires user interaction (opening a crafted file or observing live traffic), carries no privilege requirement, is unscoped (Wireshark process only), and yields availability impact exclusively. There is no confidentiality or integrity consequence. No EPSS score was supplied, and the absence of a CISA KEV listing and no known POC code suggests this is not currently targeted by threat actors. The real-world priority is moderate: this is a crasher affecting an analyst tool, not a server-side service, so the operational blast radius is limited to disrupting capture sessions. Organizations running automated Wireshark-based pipeline analysis (e.g., CI-integrated PCAP inspection) face a slightly elevated risk due to potential automated ingestion of untrusted capture files.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker crafts a malicious PCAP file embedding a malformed Z39.50 PDU and delivers it to a network analyst via email or a shared repository, then convinces the analyst to open it in a vulnerable Wireshark version, triggering the heap overflow and crashing the application. Alternatively, on a network segment where Z39.50 services (library catalog systems) are actively monitored, an attacker with network access could inject crafted Z39.50 packets to crash an analyst's live capture session. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis.

AnalysisAIv1 – Jul 08, 2026

Heap-based buffer overflow in Wireshark's Z39.50 protocol dissector crashes the application when processing malformed Z39.50 PDUs, resulting in denial of service. Affected versions span the 4.4.x branch (4.4.0-4.4.16) and 4.6.x branch (4.6.0-4.6.6). An attacker can trigger the crash by persuading an analyst to open a crafted packet capture file or by injecting malicious Z39.50 traffic onto a monitored network segment; no active exploitation (CISA KEV) or public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to Wireshark 4.4.17 or 4.6.7 as documented in vendor advisory wnpa-sec-2026-58 (https://www.wireshark.org/security/wnpa-sec-2026-58.html). As a compensating control prior to patching, disable the Z39.50 dissector via Analyze > Enabled Protocols in the Wireshark UI (or via -d z3950=false on the command line for TShark), which prevents parsing of Z39.50 traffic at the cost of losing visibility into that protocol. Additionally, avoid opening untrusted or externally-sourced packet capture files in unpatched installations, since the local attack vector means file delivery is the primary risk pathway.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Wireshark is an open-source packet analyzer that includes dissectors for hundreds of protocols, including Z39.50 - an ISO 23950 information-retrieval protocol historically used by library catalog systems. CWE-122 (Heap-based Buffer Overflow) identifies the root cause: during parsing of a malformed Z39.50 PDU, the dissector writes beyond the bounds of a heap-allocated buffer, corrupting memory and crashing the process. The flaw affects two active release trains: 4.4.0 through 4.4.16 and 4.6.0 through 4.6.6, as confirmed by EUVD-2026-42413. Because this is a dissector-layer bug, it is triggered at the packet-parsing stage before any protocol state is established.

Attack Technique

A buffer overflow occurs when a program writes more data to a memory buffer than it was allocated to hold, causing the excess data to spill into adjacent memory regions.

A heap overflow occurs when a program writes data beyond the bounds of a buffer allocated in the heap memory region.

Denial of Service attacks render applications or systems unavailable by overwhelming resources or triggering failure conditions.
