Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires that the vulnerable Wireshark 4.6.0-4.6.6 build actually dissect a crafted TLS packet carrying an Encrypted Client Hello (ECH) extension - the TLS dissector must be enabled (it is by default) and the ECH-bearing traffic must reach the decryptor either via live capture on a monitored link or by opening a malicious capture file. What limits exploitation: the target is a passive analyzer, so the attacker cannot reach it directly over the network - a victim must capture or open the attacker's traffic; impact is confined to a crash (availability only, no code execution or data exposure); and only the 4.6.0 through 4.6.6 versions are vulnerable, so 4.6.7+ and other branches are unaffected. No authentication or explicit user interaction with a dialog is required (PR:N/UI:N), but the operational precondition of capturing/loading the malicious traffic is inherent to how Wireshark is exploited.

Impact

The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H, base 7.5) reflects a network-reachable, low-complexity, unauthenticated availability-only impact - the 7.5 is driven entirely by A:H with C:N/I:N. Corroborating signals temper the raw score: EPSS is only 0.14% (4th percentile) and SSVC rates Automatable:no with Technical Impact:partial, indicating this is not a mass-scannable, wormable issue. SSVC does record Exploitation:poc, so working exploit code is understood to exist, but there is no KEV listing and no evidence of active exploitation. The AV:N rating deserves nuance: Wireshark is a passive analyzer, so 'network' exploitation means an attacker must get the victim to capture/open the malicious ECH traffic (live capture on a monitored segment or a shared capture file), not directly connect to a listening service. Net assessment: a genuine but moderate DoS affecting analyst workstations, worth patching promptly but not an emergency for most environments given availability-only impact and low automatability.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker on a network segment being monitored (or who supplies a crafted .pcap to an analyst) sends a malformed TLS handshake containing a specially crafted Encrypted Client Hello extension. When the affected Wireshark 4.6.x build dissects that packet - live or from the saved capture - the ECH decryptor overflows a heap buffer and crashes, interrupting the analyst's session. Public POC code is reported to exist, and the low attack complexity (AC:L) means no special timing or configuration is needed beyond getting the packet processed.

AnalysisAIv3 – Jul 09, 2026

Denial of service in Wireshark 4.6.0 through 4.6.6 lets a remote attacker crash the application by feeding it a malformed TLS packet using the Encrypted Client Hello (ECH) extension, triggering a heap buffer overflow in the ECH decryptor. No authentication or user interaction beyond processing the traffic is required, though impact is limited to availability (analyzer crash) with no code execution or data disclosure claimed. Publicly available exploit code exists per SSVC (POC), EPSS is low at 0.14% (4th percentile), and it is not listed in CISA KEV.

Denial of service in Wireshark 4.6.0 through 4.6.6 lets remote attackers crash the application by feeding it crafted TLS traffic that mishandles the Encrypted Client Hello (ECH) decryptor, triggering a heap-based buffer overflow (CWE-122). Any analyst who opens a malicious capture or performs live capture on a network carrying the crafted packets is affected; publicly available exploit code exists (SSVC 'poc'), but EPSS is low (0.14%, 4th percentile) and it is not on CISA KEV. Impact is limited to availability - no code execution or data disclosure is claimed.

v1 Jul 08, 2026 - 22:11 CVSS 5.5

Heap-based buffer overflow in Wireshark's TLS ECH (Encrypted Client Hello) dissector crashes the analyzer when processing a crafted packet capture, affecting versions 4.6.0 through 4.6.6. The CVSS local attack vector (AV:L) and user-interaction requirement (UI:R) confirm this is triggered by opening a malicious capture file rather than via passive network capture, limiting the attack surface to analyst workstations. No active exploitation (not in CISA KEV) and no public proof-of-concept have been identified at time of analysis; impact is confined to availability - Wireshark crashes with no code execution or data disclosure.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: upgrade to Wireshark 4.6.7 or later, which resolves the ECH decryptor heap overflow per advisory wnpa-sec-2026-56 (https://www.wireshark.org/security/wnpa-sec-2026-56.html). Until upgrading, reduce exposure by avoiding opening untrusted capture files and by not running live captures on untrusted segments with the affected 4.6.x build; if analysis of suspect traffic is required, use a patched build or a disposable/isolated host. As a targeted workaround you can disable the TLS dissector (Analyze → Enabled Protocols → uncheck TLS) so the vulnerable ECH parsing path is not invoked - the side effect is loss of all TLS decoding during that session. Because Wireshark is often run with elevated capture privileges, running it as an unprivileged user further limits blast radius.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Wireshark is a widely used network protocol analyzer that dissects captured traffic across hundreds of protocols. The flaw lives in its TLS dissector, specifically the code path that decrypts and parses the Encrypted Client Hello (ECH) extension - a TLS 1.3 privacy feature that encrypts the ClientHello inner content. The root cause is classified as CWE-122 (heap-based buffer overflow), consistent with the vendor tags 'Heap Overflow' and 'Buffer Overflow', meaning the ECH decryptor writes past the bounds of a heap-allocated buffer when handling crafted input. The single affected CPE is cpe:2.3:a:wireshark:wireshark, confirming this is the core Wireshark application (dissector engine) rather than a plugin.

Attack Technique

A buffer overflow occurs when a program writes more data to a memory buffer than it was allocated to hold, causing the excess data to spill into adjacent memory regions.

A heap overflow occurs when a program writes data beyond the bounds of a buffer allocated in the heap memory region.

Denial of Service attacks render applications or systems unavailable by overwhelming resources or triggering failure conditions.
