Exploitation Conditions

There is no reachable exploitation condition in camel-aws2-sns because the component is producer-only: Sns2Endpoint.createConsumer throws UnsupportedOperationException ('You cannot receive messages from this endpoint'), so no externally-supplied SNS message attributes are ever mapped inbound into a Camel Exchange, and the missing inbound filter rule cannot be triggered by any attacker-supplied input. The header-injection primitive would only be reachable in a component that consumes external messages (the SQS sibling, CVE-2026-46456), which requires an application deployed as an SQS consumer where an attacker can send messages to the monitored queue. For SNS, exploitation is fundamentally limited by the absence of any inbound message-handling code path - this is a defense-in-depth alignment, not an exploitable flaw.

Impact

This is a textbook case of a high raw CVSS score that does not reflect real-world risk. The provided NVD vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H = 9.8) implies remote unauthenticated full compromise, but this directly conflicts with the vendor advisory, which states there is NO known exploit path because camel-aws2-sns is producer-only and never maps external attributes inbound. The corroborating signals all point to negligible risk: EPSS is 0.16% (6th percentile), the CVE is not listed in CISA KEV, and no POC is referenced. The 9.8 appears to be an inherited/templated score from the exploitable SQS sibling (CVE-2026-46456) rather than an assessment of the SNS component's actual reachability. Verdict: NOT a real priority - the header-injection primitive that justifies C:H/I:H/A:H is unreachable in this component. Treat the CVSS score as an overestimate; the true residual risk is defense-in-depth only. This discrepancy between the CVSS network vector and the vendor's 'no exploit path' statement should be noted explicitly for any automated prioritization pipeline.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

No realistic attack scenario exists for camel-aws2-sns: the component only produces (publishes) messages to SNS and cannot consume, so an attacker cannot deliver crafted message attributes back into a Camel Exchange to inject control headers. The analogous exploitable scenario lives in the SQS sibling (CVE-2026-46456), where a message sender could inject Camel control headers via inbound message attributes mapped by Sqs2Consumer. No POC is referenced for this SNS CVE.

AnalysisAIv3 – Jul 06, 2026

Improper input validation (CWE-20) in the camel-aws2-sns component of Apache Camel stems from a missing inbound HeaderFilterStrategy rule on Sns2HeaderFilterStrategy, mirroring the flaw fixed in the sibling camel-aws2-sqs component (CVE-2026-46456). However, camel-aws2-sns is producer-only - Sns2Endpoint throws UnsupportedOperationException on createConsumer - so no externally-supplied SNS message attributes are ever mapped inbound into a Camel Exchange, leaving the missing filter rule unreachable by any attacker. Despite the NVD CVSS 9.8 rating, the vendor explicitly classifies this as a defense-in-depth alignment with no known exploit path, and EPSS scores it at just 0.16% (6th percentile); no public exploit identified at time of analysis.

Earlier versions of this analysis (2)
v2 Jul 06, 2026 - 21:15 cvss changed CVSS 9.8

Improper input validation in the camel-aws2-sns component's Sns2HeaderFilterStrategy allows, in theory, injection of Camel control headers (Camel*, breadcrumbId, org.apache.camel.*) because no inbound filter rule was configured — mirroring the exploitable gap fixed in the sibling camel-aws2-sqs component (CVE-2026-46456). However, the vendor states there is NO known exploit path in SNS: the component is producer-only (Sns2Endpoint throws UnsupportedOperationException on createConsumer), so no externally-supplied message attributes are ever mapped inbound into a Camel Exchange. This affects Apache Camel 4.0.0–4.14.7, 4.15.0–4.18.2, and 4.19.0–4.20.x; it is a defense-in-depth alignment (CAMEL-23506) with no public exploit identified at time of analysis, and a low EPSS score of 0.16% (6th percentile).

v1 Jul 05, 2026 - 20:18

Apache Camel's camel-aws2-sns component was missing an inbound Camel-namespace filter in Sns2HeaderFilterStrategy across versions 4.0.0 through pre-4.21.0, mirroring a configuration gap that was genuinely exploitable in the sibling camel-aws2-sqs component (CVE-2026-46456). No exploit path exists in camel-aws2-sns because the component is strictly producer-only - Sns2Endpoint throws UnsupportedOperationException when a consumer is requested, meaning no externally-supplied SNS message attributes can ever be mapped inbound into a Camel Exchange. Fix CAMEL-23506 adds the missing inbound filter as a defense-in-depth alignment with sibling components; this is not in CISA KEV, no public exploit code has been identified, and no urgent action is required.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: upgrade to 4.21.0, or 4.14.8 on the 4.14.x LTS stream, or 4.18.3 on the 4.18.x stream - all contain the CAMEL-23506 hardening change. Because the vendor confirms there is no known exploit path in the producer-only camel-aws2-sns component, no urgent action or workaround is required and no functional workaround is necessary; the upgrade simply aligns filter behaviour with the sibling components. As a standing best practice unrelated to this specific defect, apply least-privilege IAM permissions on SNS topics to constrain what a Camel route can publish. Consult the advisory at https://camel.apache.org/security/CVE-2026-56140.html before scheduling; this can safely follow normal maintenance cadence rather than emergency patching.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Apache Camel is a widely-used Java integration framework implementing Enterprise Integration Patterns; the camel-aws2-sns component bridges Camel routes to Amazon Simple Notification Service (SNS) using the AWS SDK v2. Camel components use a HeaderFilterStrategy to control which headers cross the boundary between the Camel Exchange and the external system. Sns2HeaderFilterStrategy originally configured only an outbound filter (setOutFilterPattern blocking Camel*, breadcrumbId, and org.apache.camel.* headers) and, like the pre-fix Sqs2HeaderFilterStrategy, lacked a corresponding inbound filter rule. The CWE-20 root cause is that inbound external headers were not validated/filtered against the Camel control namespace. In the SQS sibling this was exploitable because Sqs2Consumer maps inbound message attributes into the Exchange via HeaderFilterStrategy.applyFilterToExternalHeaders; in SNS there is no consumer path, so no inbound mapping occurs. Fix CAMEL-23506 added setInFilterStartsWith for the Camel namespace to align Sns2HeaderFilterStrategy with its corrected siblings.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Apache Camel's AWS SNS connector carries a CRITICAL vulnerability rating for a message header validation deficiency, but real-world risk is negligible because the component operates in send-only mode to SNS and never processes inbound message attributes. With 0.2% EPSS and no known exploits, this is a compliance-driven patch rather than an active threat response.
