DescriptionNVD

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

platform/x86: dell-wmi-sysman: bound enumeration string aggregation

populate_enum_data() aggregates firmware-provided value-modifier and possible-value strings into fixed 512-byte struct members. The current code bounds each individual source string but then appends every string and separator with raw strcat() and no remaining-space check.

Switch the aggregation loops to a bounded append helper and reject enumeration packages whose combined strings do not fit in the destination buffers.

AnalysisAI

Unbounded string concatenation in the Linux kernel's Dell WMI BIOS interface driver (dell-wmi-sysman) allows a local low-privileged attacker on Dell hardware to crash the kernel. The populate_enum_data() function bounds each individual firmware-provided string but applies no remaining-space check during cumulative strcat() calls into fixed 512-byte struct members, enabling a buffer overflow that results in complete system availability loss. With an EPSS of 0.17% (7th percentile), no public exploit code, and no CISA KEV listing, this is a low-likelihood but straightforward local denial-of-service on Dell platforms running unpatched kernel versions.

Technical ContextAI

The dell-wmi-sysman driver (drivers/platform/x86/dell/) exposes Dell BIOS firmware settings via the kernel's firmware_attributes sysfs interface using WMI (Windows Management Instrumentation) ACPI methods. During initialization, populate_enum_data() reads enumeration packages from BIOS firmware containing value-modifier and possible-value string lists and aggregates them into two fixed 512-byte char arrays embedded in the driver's struct. The root cause is a classic unsafe string aggregation pattern: per-string length checks were present, but the cumulative strcat() loop had no guard on remaining destination buffer capacity. Combined strings from a firmware source with many or lengthy enumeration values can therefore overflow the fixed 512-byte bounds. Although CWE is not formally assigned in the NVD record, this maps to CWE-120 (Buffer Copy without Checking Size of Input) or CWE-787 (Out-of-bounds Write). The CPE data (cpe:2.3:a:linux:linux:*) confirms the affected component as the Linux kernel itself, introduced at commit e8a60aa7404bfef37705da5607c97737073ac38d and present across multiple stable branches from Linux 5.11 onward.

RemediationAI

The primary fix is to upgrade to a patched Linux kernel release: 5.15.209, 6.1.175, 6.6.141, 6.12.91, 6.18.33, 7.0.10, or 7.1 (mainline). Upstream fix commits are available via kernel.org stable trees at https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/7b3dc1f764bf24eb99474a5de8173b0b43a8b071, https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/75c738d4f27fa18a2a033de153bd40302bde6a66, and related commits listed in the references. For systems where kernel upgrade is not immediately feasible, a compensating control is to blacklist or unload the dell-wmi-sysman kernel module using 'modprobe -r dell-wmi-sysman' or by adding 'blacklist dell-wmi-sysman' to /etc/modprobe.d/ - this prevents the driver from loading at boot, eliminating the attack surface at the cost of losing BIOS firmware attribute visibility via sysfs (e.g., battery charge thresholds, thermal mode settings). Enterprise Linux distributions (RHEL, SLES, Ubuntu LTS) should be monitored for backported security patches addressing this CVE.
