| Impact | The CVSS 3.1 base score of 5.9 (Medium) with vector AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H is well-calibrated to the described vulnerability. AV:N confirms the attack is network-deliverable via a crafted DNS response; however, AC:H correctly reflects that exploitation is gated on a non-default dual-configuration requirement - both DNSSEC validation and query logging must be explicitly enabled. Impact is strictly limited to availability (A:H, process crash); no confidentiality or integrity impact is present, making this a pure DoS. No EPSS score was provided in the available intelligence, and the CVE is absent from the CISA KEV catalog, indicating no confirmed active exploitation at time of analysis. No public proof-of-concept code has been identified. The practical risk is moderate: organizations running dnsmasq as a DNSSEC-validating resolver with logging enabled - common in enterprise DNS infrastructure and OpenShift node networking - face genuine service disruption exposure, but the non-default configuration gate sharply limits the exposed population compared to a default-configuration exploit. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker operating a malicious authoritative DNS server for a delegated zone - or capable of injecting DNS responses via cache poisoning or network interception - crafts a DNSKEY or DS record containing an algorithm or digest identifier not supported by the target dnsmasq build. When a vulnerable dnsmasq instance with both DNSSEC validation and query logging enabled resolves a name in that zone, it receives the crafted response, attempts to log the unsupported record, overflows the internal heap logging buffer, and crashes - taking down DNS and DHCP services for all clients dependent on that dnsmasq instance. No public proof-of-concept code has been identified at time of analysis. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Jun 22, 2026
Heap-based buffer overflow in dnsmasq's DNSSEC logging path enables remote denial of service against instances where both DNSSEC validation and query logging are simultaneously enabled. When dnsmasq receives a DS or DNSKEY DNS response containing an algorithm or digest type it does not recognize, its logging routine writes past the end of an internal heap-allocated buffer, corrupting memory and crashing the process. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis, and this CVE is not listed in the CISA KEV catalog; however, the network-deliverable attack vector (PR:N) makes the configuration prerequisite the primary limiting factor for defenders.
RemediationAI
Apply vendor-released patches from Red Hat via the security advisory at https://access.redhat.com/security/cve/CVE-2026-12725; exact fixed package versions are not independently confirmed from available data and should be verified directly in the advisory and tracking bug at https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2490763. As an immediate compensating control, administrators can disable either of the two required configuration options: removing the dnssec option from dnsmasq.conf eliminates DNSSEC validation and thus the vulnerable code path, but degrades DNS security posture by allowing unsigned or spoofed DNS responses; alternatively, removing log-queries disables the logging path that triggers the overflow, preserving DNSSEC protection at the cost of DNS query visibility. Network-level controls that restrict DNS resolution to trusted upstream resolvers reduce the attacker's ability to inject crafted DS or DNSKEY responses, but do not fully mitigate the flaw if the upstream resolver itself can be influenced. Monitor Red Hat Bugzilla #2490763 for patch availability and apply the official fix as soon as it is released.

Technical ContextAI · show details
dnsmasq is a lightweight DNS forwarder and DHCP server widely deployed across Linux distributions, embedded systems, and container infrastructure. The flaw is rooted in the code path that handles DNSSEC record logging: when dnsmasq validates DNS Security Extensions, it processes DS (Delegation Signer) and DNSKEY resource record types. If it encounters an algorithm or digest OID it does not support and query logging is active, the logging function miscalculates buffer boundaries, resulting in a heap-based buffer overflow classified as CWE-122. Affected deployments confirmed via CPE data include dnsmasq as shipped in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 through 10 (cpe:2.3:a:red_hat:red_hat_enterprise_linux_*) and Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform 4 (cpe:2.3:a:red_hat:red_hat_openshift_container_platform_4). The upstream dnsmasq project is the origin of the flaw, so any downstream distribution packaging dnsmasq may carry the same vulnerability regardless of Red Hat affiliation.

DescriptionCVE.org
A heap-based buffer overflow was found in dnsmasq. When DNSSEC validation and query logging are both enabled, logging of DS or DNSKEY replies containing unsupported algorithm or digest types can cause dnsmasq to write past the end of an internal logging buffer. A remote attacker able to supply such a DNS response may crash the dnsmasq process, resulting in denial of service.

A buffer overflow occurs when a program writes more data to a memory buffer than it was allocated to hold, causing the excess data to spill into adjacent memory regions.
A heap overflow occurs when a program writes data beyond the bounds of a buffer allocated in the heap memory region.
