Exploitation Conditions

The AFP Spotlight protocol dissector must be enabled in Wireshark (default configuration). A malformed AFP Spotlight packet or pcap file containing such a packet must reach the dissector; this can occur via opening a malicious pcap file locally or receiving the packet during live network capture if the attacker shares network access with the victim. User interaction is required-either explicitly opening a file or initiating a capture session. Exploitation does not require authentication, elevated privileges, or a remote network connection to Wireshark itself; however, the attacker must be able to deliver the packet either as a file or over the network segment where the victim is capturing traffic. Default Wireshark installations with no custom dissector filtering are vulnerable.

Impact

CVSS 5.5 reflects a medium-severity denial of service with important mitigating factors: local or adjacent attack vector (AV:L), low complexity (AC:L), no privileges required (PR:N), but mandatory user interaction (UI:R) to open a file or trigger packet capture. The vulnerability does not lead to code execution, data exfiltration, or integrity compromise-only availability impact (A:H). Exploitation requires an attacker to deliver a malicious pcap file or inject a crafted packet into the victim's network segment, both of which demand active attacker presence or social engineering. Real-world risk is moderate for users who handle untrusted capture files or operate on networks with active adversaries. Network analysts and incident responders who frequently open external pcap files face higher risk. The local attack vector and user interaction requirement significantly reduce exposure compared to network-vector denial-of-service threats. No EPSS score, POC status, or KEV listing provided; exploitation likelihood is plausible but not confirmed as active or weaponized.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

A security analyst receives a pcap file from an external source purporting to contain network samples for incident analysis. When the analyst opens the file in Wireshark 4.6.3, the AFP Spotlight dissector immediately encounters a malformed packet that triggers infinite recursion, causing Wireshark to crash and forcing the analyst to restart the application. Alternatively, an attacker on a shared network sends a crafted AFP Spotlight packet during the analyst's live packet capture session, inducing the same crash and interrupting their investigation.

AnalysisAIv1 – Apr 30, 2026

Wireshark versions 4.6.0-4.6.4 and 4.4.0-4.4.14 crash when processing malformed AFP Spotlight protocol packets, causing denial of service. An attacker can trigger the crash by delivering a crafted packet to a user running a vulnerable version, disrupting packet analysis and network monitoring. The vulnerability requires local or direct network access and user interaction to open a malicious capture file or receive the packet during live capture, but no authentication is needed.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to Wireshark 4.6.5 or later, or 4.4.15 or later, depending on the release branch in use. These patched versions include fixes to the AFP Spotlight dissector to prevent infinite recursion or stack overflow. Until patching is complete, avoid opening untrusted pcap files from unknown sources; if live packet capture is necessary, configure network segmentation to prevent delivery of malicious AFP Spotlight packets, or temporarily disable AFP dissection via Wireshark's dissector settings (Menu: Analyze → Enabled Protocols, uncheck AFP). Note that disabling the dissector prevents analysis of legitimate AFP traffic, so it is suitable only for short-term mitigation. See https://www.wireshark.org/security/wnpa-sec-2026-13.html for patch download and additional guidance.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The AFP (Apple Filing Protocol) Spotlight protocol dissector in Wireshark is susceptible to an infinite recursion or stack overflow condition (CWE-674: Uncontrolled Recursion). The dissector parses Spotlight query packets without proper depth or complexity limits, allowing specially crafted packets to exhaust the call stack and crash the Wireshark process. This is a protocol-parsing vulnerability specific to Wireshark's dissector logic, not the AFP protocol itself. Affected versions span two major release lines: 4.4.x and 4.6.x, indicating the vulnerability was introduced or remained unfixed across multiple development cycles.
