Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires the attacker to be able to write to a host repository's Git configuration - concretely, a direct-mode Docker Sandbox with that repository mounted read-write, which lets the attacker set core.fsmonitor or another Git setting that invokes an external program. The payload only executes when the user subsequently performs a clone-mode fetch, or (in versions 0.39.0 and later) an sbx kit push, so a victim-initiated Git operation is a hard prerequisite (UI:A). Limiting factors: the vector is local, not network; a clone-mode sandbox's read-only host-repository mount cannot modify the Git configuration, so that path is not exploitable; the attacker needs a pre-existing read-write sandbox foothold; and the issue is fully fixed in version 0.50.0, which the vendor presents as the remedy.

Impact

The vendor-assigned CVSS 4.0 score is 7.1 (High) with vector AV:L/AC:L/AT:P/PR:N/UI:A and VC:H/VI:H/VA:H, meaning full compromise of the host (confidentiality, integrity, availability) but only via a local vector that requires a present attack condition (AT:P) and active user interaction (UI:A). This is materially more serious than the 'Information Disclosure' tag suggests - the real impact is arbitrary program execution on the host outside the microVM isolation boundary, i.e. a sandbox-escape leading to code execution as the invoking user. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no proof-of-concept reference are present in the supplied data (the only references are Docker documentation and the v0.50.0 release notes), so exploitation is unproven in the wild. The vuln.today decision label is 'this_week', consistent with a real but not emergency priority: exploitation is not trivially remote or automatable - it needs an attacker who already has a direct-mode sandbox with the repository mounted read-write, plus a later victim-initiated clone-mode fetch or sbx kit push to fire the poisoned Git setting. Net: a genuine high-impact sandbox-escape worth patching promptly, but the local vector, required foothold, and required user action reduce the likelihood of opportunistic mass exploitation. PR:N is reported by the vendor, yet in practice the attacker must first control a read-write host-repository mount, so treat 'unauthenticated' with that caveat.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker who already operates a direct-mode Docker Sandbox with a host repository mounted read-write edits that repository's .git configuration to set core.fsmonitor (or another setting that invokes an external program). Later, when the legitimate user runs a clone-mode fetch, or an sbx kit push on versions 0.39.0 and above, host-side Git executes the attacker's program on the host with the user's permissions, escaping the microVM. No public exploit code is identified in the supplied data.

AnalysisAIv1 – Nov 03, 2026

Docker Sandboxes 0.31.0 through 0.49.x run host-side Git commands against a workspace repository whose Git configuration may have been written from inside a sandbox, allowing an attacker to plant a setting such as core.fsmonitor that Git later executes as a program on the host, outside the microVM boundary and with the invoking user's privileges. The attacker needs write access to the host repository's Git configuration - a direct-mode sandbox with that repository mounted read-write is the stated route - and the configured program only runs when the user subsequently performs a clone-mode fetch or, from version 0.39.0 onward, an sbx kit push. Docker fixed the issue in 0.50.0; no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to Docker Sandboxes 0.50.0, the release that fixes this issue; its notes state that host Git commands no longer run programs configured by a sandbox through the workspace repository's .git directory (https://github.com/docker/sbx-releases/releases/tag/v0.50.0). If upgrading immediately is not possible, reduce exposure by avoiding read-write mounts of untrusted repositories into direct-mode sandboxes, since write access to the host repository's Git configuration is the prerequisite for the attack, and inspect .git/config for directives such as core.fsmonitor before running host-side Git operations such as clone-mode fetches or sbx kit pushes - this is a manual check with no enforcement behind it, so it only lowers risk rather than removing it. Note that switching to clone-mode's read-only host-repository mount does close this specific configuration-write path, but it changes the workflow available to the sandbox. Version 0.50.0 also bundles additional hardening (stricter sbx cp symlink handling, trusted-path resolution for helper programs, digest-pinned local source kits, and tightened kit reference parsing), so moving to that release resolves several adjacent weaknesses at once.

Technical ContextAI · show details

CWE-15 (External Control of System or Configuration Setting) is the root-cause class: Git reads repository-local configuration from the workspace's .git directory and honours directives such as core.fsmonitor that name an external program to invoke, so a repository-controlled setting becomes host-side code execution when the trusted Git client picks it up. Docker Sandboxes normally contain workloads in a microVM, but the affected operations - a clone-mode fetch, and from 0.39.0 an sbx kit push - are host-side Git commands that run as ordinary host processes under the invoking user's account, so the sandbox boundary is never crossed by the payload itself; it is bypassed because the host trusts repository-supplied configuration. The vendor rates this CVSS 4.0 7.1 with AV:L/AC:L/AT:P/PR:N/UI:A and high confidentiality, integrity and availability impact on the host; our independent CVSS 3.1 assessment (AV:L/AC:H/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H) agrees on host-wide impact and on the scope change caused by escaping the microVM, but rates attack complexity higher because exploitation requires a pre-existing read-write sandbox foothold plus a later user-initiated Git operation. The configuration-writing step is limited: the read-only host-repository mount handed to a clone-mode sandbox does not let that sandbox modify the host repository's Git configuration, so that deployment mode is not an exploitation route.

DescriptionCVE.org

Docker Sandboxes versions 0.31.0 before 0.50.0 do not neutralize repository-controlled Git configuration when running certain host-side Git commands. An attacker who can modify a host repository's Git configuration, for example through a direct-mode sandbox with the repository mounted read-write, can configure core.fsmonitor or another Git setting that invokes an external program. Git can execute the program during a later clone-mode fetch or, starting in version 0.39.0, an sbx kit push initiated by the user. The program runs on the host with the invoking user's permissions, outside the sandbox's microVM isolation. The read-only host repository mount provided to a clone-mode sandbox does not itself allow that sandbox to modify the host repository's Git configuration. The issue is fixed in version 0.50.0.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Docker Sandboxes versions 0.31.0 through 0.49.x contain a high-severity vulnerability (CVE-2026-121614) that enables code execution on the host when certain Git operations are triggered, potentially compromising developer workstations and internal repositories. Engineering teams using these versions are at risk, and leadership should prioritize upgrade to 0.50.0 to prevent unauthorized access to sensitive code and systems.
