| Exploitation Conditions | Requires (1) a valid OPNsense Web UI or API account whose delegated ACL grants access to one of the affected settings - e.g. page-services-dnsforwarder / api/dnsmasq/* for the confirmed Dnsmasq path, or the Monit, OpenVPN, Unbound, IPsec, NTP, PPP/MPD, DHCPv6, firewall, sudo, WebGUI or System General settings for the related fields; (2) the targeted service enabled (e.g. Dnsmasq DNS & DHCP must be active); and (3) the ability to apply or restart that service through the UI/API so the regenerated config is reloaded. Limiting factors that reduce real-world risk: exploitation is authenticated (PR:L, not pre-auth), is bounded to accounts that have been delegated the specific setting rather than full admins, and depends on the relevant service being in use; impact and whether it reaches command execution vary by component (root command execution confirmed only for Monit, not Dnsmasq). Affected: versions prior to 26.1.11 and prior to 26.4.1p1. |
| Impact | The input CVSS vector (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:H/A:H, 8.1) is internally consistent: network-reachable (Web UI/API), low complexity, but PR:L means exploitation requires an authenticated account - specifically one holding delegated ACL access to an affected settings page. This is not a pre-auth internet-facing bug; it is a privilege/RBAC-boundary break usable by an insider or by an attacker who has already obtained limited delegated credentials. No EPSS score and no CISA KEV status were supplied in the input, so widespread-exploitation probability cannot be quantified and there is no evidence of active exploitation; the vuln.today Decision label is 'this_week' (not act_now/emergency). A public PoC is present: the GHSA advisory embeds a Python script and states the Dnsmasq path was dynamically validated in a lab. Signals therefore align on a genuine, credible, but access-gated issue rather than a drive-by: high technical impact (confirmed root command execution via the Monit path; integrity/availability damage to root-managed service configs across many components) tempered by the PR:L authentication requirement. For environments that use delegated/limited admin accounts this is a real RBAC-escalation priority worth patching promptly; for single-full-admin deployments the practical escalation benefit is smaller. Note the input vector sets C:N even though the confirmed Monit path yields root command execution (which would imply confidentiality impact) - this is a divergence between the published vector and the demonstrated worst case. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An authenticated OPNsense user who was granted only delegated access to an affected settings page (for example page-services-dnsforwarder) submits a value containing CR/LF characters in a single-line field, breaking out of the intended generated line and appending attacker-controlled directives to a root-managed service config file. After the service is applied or restarted, the privileged daemon loads the injected directives - on the confirmed Monit path this was demonstrated to achieve root command execution, while the Dnsmasq path injects arbitrary dnsmasq directives (shell execution not confirmed there). A public PoC with a working Python validation script is published in the GHSA advisory, lowering the barrier to reproduction. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Nov 03, 2026
OPNsense core before 26.1.11 and 26.4.1p1 allows authenticated Web UI or API users with delegated access to affected settings to inject CR/LF characters into fields expected to hold a single line, causing generated privileged service configuration files to contain extra attacker-controlled directives or policy lines. The confirmed Dnsmasq path can add arbitrary dnsmasq directives through dhcp_boot.filename, dhcp_boot.servername, dhcp_boot.address, and dhcp_options.value, while related fields span OpenVPN, DHCPv6, Unbound, IPsec, NTP, PPP/MPD, Monit, firewall, sudo, WebGUI and System General settings, with impact varying by component; Monit mail password and adjacent text fields were demonstrated to reach root command execution, but arbitrary shell execution was not confirmed for Dnsmasq. The GitHub advisory includes a public proof-of-concept reference and lab reproduction steps for the Dnsmasq path, and no CISA KEV entry is present in the supplied intelligence.
RemediationAI
Upgrade OPNsense to 26.1.11 or 26.4.1p1; these are the fixed releases listed in GHSA-fq94-cxvc-9r7w, with upstream fix commits 52b18e67a9ec4596a64ac3a53f3aa102ced55293 and 6c3be9a11699879fe50aea1c30e50de5864601d7. After upgrading, apply or restart the affected services so the regenerated configuration files are loaded. The supplied advisory does not document a separate workaround, so the complete remediation is the vendor update to a fixed release.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The flaw is a line-oriented configuration injection issue in OPNsense's PHP MVC settings layer, matching CWE-74 (improper neutralization of special elements in output used by a downstream component) and CWE-93 (CRLF injection). Fields that are logically single-line values are modeled as ordinary TextField values and are later rendered by Jinja templates directly into privileged service configuration files without rejecting or escaping carriage return and line feed characters. When the affected service is applied or restarted, the generated file is reloaded by a root-managed daemon and the injected lines become active configuration. In the confirmed Dnsmasq case, dhcp_boot.filename, dhcp_boot.servername, dhcp_boot.address and dhcp_options.value are written into /usr/local/etc/dnsmasq.conf, allowing a delegated page-services-dnsforwarder / api/dnsmasq/* user to add dnsmasq directives beyond the intended DHCP boot or option setting. The same pattern was confirmed in OpenVPN instance and inline-block fields, DHCPv6 advanced interface script, Unbound advanced/ACL/DNSBL fields, IPsec Swanctl and strongSwan attribute fields, NTP time server input, PPP/MPD PPPoE username, Monit mail password and adjacent text fields, firewall DNAT rule.tag, sudo_allow_group, WebGUI compression, and System General timezone. The privilege boundary is crossed because a user delegated only a specific settings page can alter root-managed service configuration; the independent assessment rates it CVSS 8.1 with network reachability, low complexity, PR:L (authenticated), no user interaction, and high confidentiality, integrity and availability impact, while noting that command execution is confirmed only for the Monit path.

2DescriptionCVE.org
OPNsense is a FreeBSD based firewall and routing platform. Prior to 26.1.11 and 26.4.1p1, authenticated Web UI or API users with delegated access to affected settings can submit CR or LF characters in fields expected to contain one line, causing generated privileged service configuration files to contain additional attacker-controlled directives or policy lines. The confirmed Dnsmasq path includes dhcp_boot.filename, dhcp_boot.servername, dhcp_boot.address, and dhcp_options.value, which are rendered into /usr/local/etc/dnsmasq.conf; access through page-services-dnsforwarder covers api/dnsmasq/*. Related affected fields span OpenVPN, DHCPv6, Unbound, IPsec, NTP, PPP or MPD, Monit, firewall, sudo, WebGUI, and System General configuration. Applying or restarting the affected service can alter behavior beyond the delegated setting, create service-side files, cross RBAC boundaries, or cause denial of service. Line injection through Monit mail password and adjacent Monit text fields into /usr/local/etc/monitrc demonstrated root command execution. Arbitrary shell command execution was not confirmed for the Dnsmasq path. This issue is fixed in versions 26.1.11 and 26.4.1p1.

Executive ViewAI
OPNsense, a widely used open-source firewall and routing platform, contains a high-severity configuration injection flaw (CVE-2026-57154) that allows authenticated users with delegated administrative privileges to inject malicious directives into critical system services. This could enable attackers to alter firewall rules, reroute DNS traffic, or execute commands as root, undermining the integrity of network security controls and potentially exposing the entire organization to further compromise.
