Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires three concrete preconditions working together: (1) the victim must use the IDE's embedded browser to load an HTTPS resource (UI:R - it is not exercised by normal non-browser IDE use); (2) the attacker must occupy a network man-in-the-middle position able to intercept that TLS connection; and (3) the attacker must present a certificate chain built on a revoked eMudhra-issued intermediate that the embedded browser fails to reject. The limiting factors are therefore significant: without a revoked-but-previously-valid intermediate from the eMudhra compromise and an active interception position, the flaw is not reachable, and it does not apply to users who never invoke the embedded browser. The only complete fix stated by the vendor is updating to the fixed build for each product (IntelliJ IDEA/PyCharm/PhpStorm/RubyMine/WebStorm 2026.3, 2026.2.4, 2026.1.5.1, 2025.3.6.2; GoLand 2026.3/2026.2.4/2026.1.5.1/2025.3.5.2; Rider 2026.3/2026.2.4/2026.1.5.3/2025.3.5.3; CLion 2026.3/2026.2.4.1/2026.1.5.2/2025.3.6.3; DataGrip 2026.3/2026.2.6.1/2026.1.4.1/2025.3.6.1; RustRover 2026.3/2026.2.5/2026.1.4.1/2025.3.7.1; DataSpell 2026.1.3.1/2025.3.3.1).

Impact

The signals are consistent and point to a real but conditional, not emergency, priority. The CVSS 3.1 vector (8.0, AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:N) encodes exactly the limiting factors that matter: no authentication to the IDE is needed (PR:N), but the attack is high-complexity (AC:H) and requires victim interaction (UI:R), and the scope change (S:C) plus C:H/I:H reflect that a successful man-in-the-middle can both read and tamper with TLS-protected traffic in the embedded browser. The vuln.today decision label is 'this_week' rather than act_now/emergency, which aligns with the absence of exploitation signals: no CISA KEV listing, no EPSS score, and no PoC are present in the input, so there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis. The flaw is a certificate-revocation-checking failure (CWE-299) that became exploitable because of the external eMudhra CA compromise referenced by JetBrains - so real-world risk is gated on an attacker actually possessing one of the compromised/revoked intermediate certificates and holding a network interception position, which makes this better characterized as a targeted MITM risk than a mass-exploitable issue. Net: a genuine high-severity confidentiality/integrity exposure for developers using the embedded browser, but practical exploitation requires several aligned preconditions rather than being trivially remote.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker positioned to intercept network traffic (e.g., shared/hostile Wi‑Fi, compromised upstream, or rogue proxy) presents a revoked eMudhra-issued intermediate certificate to a developer whose JetBrains IDE embedded browser is loading an HTTPS resource. Because the embedded browser trusts the revoked intermediate instead of rejecting it, the TLS session is silently intercepted, letting the attacker read and modify the content the developer sees or submits. No public exploit is identified at time of analysis, and success depends on the attacker controlling a chain anchored by the compromised certificates and on the user actively using the embedded browser (AC:H, UI:R).

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 30, 2026

The embedded browser in JetBrains desktop IDEs - IntelliJ IDEA, PyCharm, PhpStorm, RubyMine, WebStorm, GoLand, Rider, CLion, DataGrip, RustRover and DataSpell - continues to trust revoked intermediate certificates, so an attacker holding a man-in-the-middle position on an HTTPS connection opened from that browser can present a chain anchored in a revoked eMudhra intermediate and have it accepted, exposing or altering data the user believes is protected by TLS. Reachability is narrow: the victim must actually load an HTTPS resource in the embedded browser, the attacker must be able to intercept that specific TLS session, and a revoked-but-previously-issued eMudhra intermediate must be available, so ordinary coding activity that never touches the embedded browser is not affected. No public exploit identified at time of analysis, exploitation has not been confirmed, and the issue is prioritized for remediation this week rather than as an emergency; JetBrains has published fixed builds for every affected product line.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patches are available for every affected product line, and updating to the fixed build is the only complete fix the vendor states: IntelliJ IDEA, PyCharm, PhpStorm, RubyMine and WebStorm to 2026.3, 2026.2.4, 2026.1.5.1 or 2025.3.6.2; GoLand to 2026.3, 2026.2.4, 2026.1.5.1 or 2025.3.5.2; Rider to 2026.3, 2026.2.4, 2026.1.5.3 or 2025.3.5.3; CLion to 2026.3, 2026.2.4.1, 2026.1.5.2 or 2025.3.6.3; DataGrip to 2026.3, 2026.2.6.1, 2026.1.4.1 or 2025.3.6.1; RustRover to 2026.3, 2026.2.5, 2026.1.4.1 or 2025.3.7.1; and DataSpell to 2026.1.3.1 or 2025.3.3.1. Pick the build that matches the branch already deployed rather than jumping major versions where change control is tight. Refer to https://www.jetbrains.com/privacy-security/issues-fixed/ for the consolidated fix index and https://blog.jetbrains.com/security/2026/10/compromised-emudhra-certificates-ides/ for the vendor's account of the compromised eMudhra certificates and the IDE impact; the CA's own notice is at https://emudhra.com/en/post/certificate-security-incident and the parallel browser-vendor handling is tracked in https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2083449. Because the flaw sits in the bundled embedded browser, patching the IDE is what restores revocation enforcement; no separate configuration toggle is documented in the available sources.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The root cause class is CWE-299, Improper Check for Certificate Revocation: the Chromium-based embedded browser component shipped inside the JetBrains IDEs did not correctly reject intermediate CA certificates that had been revoked, so a chain built on such an intermediate was still treated as valid. The underlying event is a certificate security incident at the commercial CA eMudhra, whose compromised certificates were revoked; JetBrains documents the IDE-specific impact in its security blog and cross-references the broader ecosystem discussion in Mozilla bug 2083449, where browser vendors addressed the same revocation-handling gap. The assessed vector CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:N reflects this: network reachability, no privileges required, but a high attack complexity and a user-interaction requirement because the victim must drive the embedded browser to an HTTPS resource, and a scope change because a failure inside the IDE component lets an attacker impersonate arbitrary parties within the TLS trust model. The confidentiality and integrity impact is high while availability is unaffected. Revocation checking is the security control that distinguishes a trusted chain from a chain anchored in a withdrawn intermediate; when that check is skipped, revocation of a compromised intermediate provides no protection to any client that still honors it.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

JetBrains desktop IDEs contain a high-severity flaw where the embedded browser trusts revoked certificates, enabling man-in-the-middle attacks that could expose or alter sensitive data for developers using the browser feature. This primarily affects engineering teams relying on these tools, potentially undermining trust in development environments and risking data confidentiality.
