MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Privilege Escalation The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | The attacker must already hold a valid read-only session in a live document - specifically a viewer-role WOPI user - so a working Collabora Online integration and an issued read-only session are prerequisites (reflected in PR:L). Exploitation uses crafted WebSocket messages to invoke document-mutating UNO commands and dialog operations on affected server paths that failed to enforce the session's read-only state; no end-user interaction by a victim is required to perform the mutation (UI:N). Impact is sharply limited: the read-only attacker cannot save the document, changes exist only in the per-document kit process and are discarded when the session ends, so durable effect requires an authorized editor to be sharing the same live session and to save the changes, and the only other effect is misleading concurrent co-viewers. Affected: Collabora Online < 24.04.18 and < 25.04.11. |
| Impact | This is a genuinely low-to-moderate risk issue, consistent with its 4.3 CVSS, and the multiple signals agree rather than conflict. The CVSS vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:N) correctly captures a network-reachable but privilege-requiring (PR:L - the attacker must already hold a valid read-only/viewer session) authorization flaw with only partial integrity impact and no confidentiality or availability impact. The SSVC/priority Decision label is 'this_month', not act_now or emergency, which aligns with the limited impact. There is no CISA KEV listing (not confirmed actively exploited), no EPSS score was supplied, and no public exploit code or PoC reference is present in the input beyond the vendor's own GHSA advisory - so exploitation is theoretical at this point. The real-world damage ceiling is explicitly bounded by the vendor: a read-only attacker cannot save the document, changes live only in the per-document kit process and are discarded when the session ends, so harm requires either deceiving concurrent co-viewers or tricking an authorized editor in the same live session into saving attacker-introduced changes. This is a real but narrow authorization defect, not a high-severity priority. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A user granted only viewer (read-only) WOPI access joins a live document session, toggles the read-only client UI into edit mode (the UI is not a security control), and sends crafted WebSocket messages that invoke document-mutating UNO commands and dialog operations the server failed to block. Co-viewers in the session see the injected modifications, and if an authorized editor is sharing the session they may save the attacker's changes without realizing they were introduced. No public exploit code is identified at time of analysis; exploitation requires an existing low-privilege read-only session. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 30, 2026
Read-only session enforcement bypass in Collabora Online before 24.04.18 and 25.04.11 lets an authenticated viewer-role WOPI user send crafted WebSocket messages that execute document-mutating UNO commands and dialog operations inside the live per-document kit process, despite holding a read-only session. The attacker cannot save the document and the changes are discarded when the kit session ends, so real-world impact is limited to misleading co-viewers in the same live session or having an authorized editor unknowingly persist the edits - matching the 4.3 CVSS (integrity low, no confidentiality or availability impact). No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis and the issue is not confirmed actively exploited (not in CISA KEV); the vendor has released fixed versions 24.04.18 and 25.04.11.
RemediationAI
Apply the vendor-released patch: upgrade to Collabora Online 24.04.18 (24.04 branch) or 25.04.11 (25.04 branch), as documented in advisory GHSA-27j2-3cqv-cc5q. The fix adds general read-only guards to dialog interactions and reclassifies various UNO commands as unavailable server-side for read-only views, so it must be applied on the server - client-side or UI-level restrictions are explicitly not a security control here. No separate workaround is described in the available advisory data; until the upgrade is deployed, the exposure is bounded by the fact that a read-only user cannot save, so limiting which users receive co-editing sessions alongside view-only participants reduces the piggybacking scenario, at the cost of losing the collaborative viewing workflow.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Collabora Online is a collaborative office suite built on LibreOffice technology; document operations are delegated to LibreOfficeKit inside a per-document "kit" process, and browser clients communicate with it over WebSocket. The design intends the server side to enforce a session's read-only state so that a viewer-role (WOPI) session cannot mutate the document, while the read-only UI is only a convenience that a skilled user can toggle. This is CWE-863 (Incorrect Authorization): several code paths - dialog interactions and a set of UNO commands - were not guarded by a read-only check, so client-supplied or client-influenced permission expectations were trusted instead of access control being enforced independently on the server. A crafted WebSocket message can therefore reach UNO commands that mutate the in-memory document within the kit process. Because the mutation lives only in that kit instance, persistence requires an editor in the same session to save, and the session's own read-only user has no save capability.

Lifecycle Timeline
2DescriptionCVE.org
Collabora Online is a collaborative online office suite based on LibreOffice technology. Prior to 24.04.18 and 25.04.11, several document operations delegated to LibreOfficeKit in the per-document kit process fail to enforce a session's read-only state. A read-only user, such as a viewer-role WOPI user, can send crafted WebSocket messages to execute document-mutating UNO commands and dialog operations despite the read-only interface. The changes can mislead co-viewers within the live session, or an authorized editor sharing the session can unknowingly save the modifications. The read-only attacker cannot save the document directly, and changes are discarded when the kit session ends unless an authorized editor saves them. This issue is fixed in versions 24.04.18 and 25.04.11.
