Exploitation Conditions

The attacker must already hold an authenticated organization-administrator role on the Lago instance (PR:L) and use the EMAIL_PASSWORD login method - the fix shows SSO flows were unaffected because the identity provider already validates the email. The admin must be able to issue an invite to the victim's email and the victim must already exist as a Lago user; pre-patch, invites.accept_service registered/accepted the invite and returned a JWT via the email/password path without calling any password check for that existing account. No victim user interaction is required. Limiting factors: requires valid admin credentials on the target instance, requires email/password auth (SSO-only organizations are not exploitable via this path), and affects only Lago versions 0 through 1.55.0.

Impact

The CVSS 4.0 base score of 8.7 (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N/VC:H/VI:H/VA:H) is driven by full account takeover impact, but the single most important mitigating signal is PR:L: exploitation requires the attacker to already be an authenticated organization administrator, so this is an insider or compromised-admin privilege-escalation/lateral-movement issue rather than a remote-unauthenticated mass-exploitation bug. No EPSS probability is provided and the CVE is not listed in CISA KEV, so there is no evidence of active or widespread exploitation; the vuln.today decision label is 'this_week' (priority but not emergency/act_now), which is consistent with high impact tempered by the privilege precondition. A public technical writeup (abraxaslabs 'lago-invite-ato') and a VulnCheck advisory document the technique, and the fixing commit confirms the mechanism, so the flaw is well-understood and reproducible even though no confirmed weaponized exploit code is cited. Net: a genuine high-severity authentication-bypass worth patching promptly for anyone running self-hosted Lago with multiple tenants/admins, but not an internet-wide drive-by emergency given the PR:L requirement and absence of KEV/EPSS signals.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An authenticated organization administrator on a Lago instance invites a victim's email address into an organization they control, then calls the acceptInvite GraphQL mutation supplying an arbitrary password; pre-patch, the email/password accept path issued a JWT for the pre-existing victim account without ever verifying the victim's real password. The admin thereby obtains a valid session for the victim and reaches the victim's other organizations, billing data, API keys and payment integrations. A public research PoC reference exists (abraxaslabs) describing this invite-to-account-takeover flow, though it is not verified as working exploit code in the provided data.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 30, 2026

Lago's acceptInvite GraphQL mutation (all versions through 1.55.0) issues a valid session JWT for a pre-existing account without verifying that account's password, so an attacker who already holds an organization-administrator role can invite a victim's email address, accept the invite with a password of their choosing, and receive a token that grants access to the victim's organizations, billing data, API keys and payment integrations. Exploitation is authenticated (CVSS 4.0 PR:L) and limited to organizations using the EMAIL_PASSWORD authentication method; SSO-backed organizations are not reachable through this path because the identity provider already validates the email claim, and no victim interaction is required. No public exploit code is confirmed at time of analysis, although a public research writeup describing the attack chain exists, and the vendor has published an upstream fix commit.

RemediationAI

Upgrade Lago past 1.55.0 to a build containing the upstream fix commit 5a9d5935b027d1db7171c7c015283d5870451305 (pull request https://github.com/getlago/lago-api/pull/6146), which adds a password check via Invites::AuthenticateUserService for existing accounts and replaces the client-supplied email with a token-resolved invite flow; the released tagged version carrying that commit is not independently confirmed in the available data, so verify the commit is present in the artifact you deploy. If immediate upgrade is not possible, the most effective compensating control is to reconfigure affected organizations to SSO-only authentication methods, which removes the EMAIL_PASSWORD path this bypass depends on - the trade-off is that local password logins stop working for those tenants. In parallel, treat organization-administrator accounts as a trust boundary: audit who holds admin roles, rotate API keys and payment-integration credentials for any organization whose admin accounts may be compromised, and review invite records addressed to existing user emails for acceptances that did not originate from the legitimate mailbox owner. Disabling the acceptInvite mutation at the GraphQL gateway would block the attack but also blocks all legitimate onboarding, so it is only reasonable for short, tightly scoped windows. Lago instances exposed to untrusted administrators should be prioritized this week per the current decision label.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Lago is an open-source billing and metering platform whose API is a Ruby on Rails application exposing a GraphQL surface (app/graphql/mutations/invites/accept.rb, types/mutation_type.rb). The flaw is CWE-288, Authentication Bypass Using an Alternate Path or Channel: the invite-acceptance code path was an alternate authentication channel that never applied the credential check performed by the normal login flow. In v1.55.0, Invites::AcceptService called UsersService with :register_from_invite for every invitation (app/services/invites/accept_service.rb), and the mutation accepted an arbitrary caller-supplied email and password; when the invited address already belonged to a Lago user, the service returned a membership and a signed JWT for that existing account rather than rejecting the request or forcing a password check. The upstream fix (commit 5a9d5935b027d1db7171c7c015283d5870451305, PR #6146) restructures this: AcceptService now detects an existing user via a case-insensitive email lookup (Invite#existing_user) and routes EMAIL_PASSWORD acceptances through a new Invites::AuthenticateUserService that validates the password before joining, while introducing a separate Invites::JoinOrganization mutation and an Invites::JoinService so that authenticated users join via an invite token resolved server-side. The email argument on Accept was deprecated because the address is now derived from the invitation token instead of being trusted from the client. Per-organization authentication_methods are consulted (Invite#login_method_allowed?), which is why SSO flows were unaffected - the identity provider performs the email verification for them.

DescriptionCVE.org

Lago through 1.55.0 contains an authentication bypass vulnerability that allows organization administrators to obtain session tokens for existing accounts via the acceptInvite mutation without a password check. Attackers can invite a victim's email, accept with an arbitrary password, and receive a JWT to access the victim's organizations, billing data, API keys and payment integrations.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

A high-severity vulnerability in Lago's invitation system (acceptInvite mutation) up to version 1.55.0 allows an authenticated organization administrator to take over pre-existing accounts without password verification. This impacts organizations using email/password authentication, exposing sensitive billing data, API keys, and payment integrations to unauthorized access. Leadership should prioritize remediation to prevent potential data breaches and financial fraud.
