Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires (1) an attacker-controlled man-in-the-middle position on the network path between DB Tools and the MongoDB server, and (2) a TLS certificate chaining to the eMudhra CA that the newer Go denylist distrusts but the 100.19.0 build (Go 1.26.8) still accepts, valid for the targeted hostname. The victim must actively run an affected DB Tools version (prior to 100.20.0) to initiate a TLS connection (passive user interaction, UI:P). Limiting factors: the flaw affects only builds before 100.20.0; it does not apply to connections already protected by pinning or a restricted CA set, and the attacker gains nothing without both the interception position and a usable eMudhra-issued certificate.

Impact

This is a certificate-validation weakness (CWE-295): MongoDB DB Tools 100.19.0 was compiled with Golang 1.26.8, whose crypto/x509 denylist predates the addition of the distrusted eMudhra CA certificates, so the tools will trust TLS certificates chaining to that known-bad CA. The vendor CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:H/AT:P/PR:N/UI:P/VC:H/VI:H/VA:N) is internally consistent with this: network reachable but with elevated attack complexity and a specific attack requirement (AT:P) plus passive user interaction (UI:P) - i.e. the attacker needs a man-in-the-middle position AND a usable eMudhra-issued certificate, while a victim must initiate a TLS connection with the tool. That combination makes this a real-but-conditional issue rather than a trivially wormable one. No EPSS score, no KEV listing and no POC reference are present in the input - only the vendor changelog - so there is no signal of active or automated exploitation; the vuln.today priority is 'this_week' (patch promptly, not an emergency). Net: a legitimate confidentiality/integrity exposure for TLS-protected MongoDB connections that depends on the attacker already holding network position and a distrusted-CA certificate, which bounds real-world risk below the raw 7.6 severity.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker positioned to intercept traffic (rogue Wi-Fi, compromised gateway, or hijacked DNS/BGP) presents a TLS certificate that chains to the distrusted eMudhra CA while a victim runs DB Tools 100.19.0 (built with Go 1.26.8) to connect to a MongoDB endpoint over TLS. Because the older Go build lacks the eMudhra denylist entry, the tool accepts the certificate, letting the attacker decrypt or modify the session and harvest database credentials and data. No public exploit identified at time of analysis.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 28, 2026

MongoDB Database Tools builds prior to 100.20.0 (specifically 100.19.0, compiled with Golang 1.26.8) will accept TLS server certificates chaining to the eMudhra CA, which Go's crypto/x509 denylist only began rejecting in Golang 1.27.3. An attacker holding a man-in-the-middle position on the network path and a usable eMudhra-issued certificate for the targeted hostname could therefore intercept DB Tools connections to a MongoDB server and read or alter traffic; the victim must actively initiate the connection. No public exploit code or confirmed active exploitation was identified at the time of analysis, and the flaw is resolved in DB Tools 100.20.0.

RemediationAI

Upgrade MongoDB Database Tools to 100.20.0 or later, which is built with Golang 1.27.3 and therefore includes the eMudhra entries in the crypto/x509 denylist; see the 100.20.0 release notes at https://www.mongodb.com/docs/database-tools/release-notes/dbtools-100.20.0-changelog/ for the change record. The vendor-released patch is version 100.20.0 and updating is the complete fix for the embedded Go runtime trust behavior. Where an immediate upgrade is not possible, the exposure can be reduced by ensuring connections are protected by certificate pinning or a restricted CA set, since the flaw does not apply to connections whose trust is already constrained in that way; note that this limits flexibility when rotating server certificates. Additionally, restricting the network path so that DB Tools only reaches MongoDB servers over trusted, segmented links reduces the attacker's opportunity to obtain the man-in-the-middle position the flaw requires, at the cost of additional network configuration and reduced operational flexibility.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Go's crypto/x509 package does not rely solely on the operating system trust store; it also maintains an internal denylist of CA certificates that are considered compromised or otherwise untrustworthy, checked during certificate chain verification. Golang 1.27.3 added the eMudhra certificates to that internal list. MongoDB DB Tools 100.19.0 was built with Golang 1.26.8, so its embedded verification logic does not know about that entry and will complete a TLS handshake with a server certificate issued under the eMudhra hierarchy, subject to the usual hostname and validity checks. The root-cause class is CWE-295, improper certificate validation: the client's notion of which CAs are untrusted is stale relative to the current Go release. The weakness is only reachable where the tool dials TLS itself with default trust settings; deployments that pin certificates or restrict the accepted CA set are not affected, and the attacker still needs both an interception position and a certificate the newer denylist would reject.

DescriptionCVE.org

The DB Tools rely on the TLS implementation in Golang’s standard library, which generally uses the system CA store. However, the crypto/x509 package also has its own internal denylist of known-bad CA certificates. Golang 1.27.3 adds the eMudhra certificates to this list.

DB Tools version 100.19.0 was compiled with Golang 1.26.8, which does not include this check.

The issue is resolved by updating to Golang 1.27.3 in DB Tools 100.20.0

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

MongoDB Database Tools versions prior to 100.20.0 include a trusted certificate authority (eMudhra) that enables man-in-the-middle interception of connections to MongoDB servers. This affects any team using these tools to move or manage production data, potentially exposing sensitive information or allowing tampering. Leadership should prioritize patching because the vulnerability undermines a core security control (TLS) and could lead to data breaches or compliance issues.
