Exploitation Conditions

Three specific prerequisites from the advisory must all hold: (1) SAML SSO is enabled and configured (saml_enabled = 1 with valid IdP metadata) - this is a non-default deployment mode; (2) the attacker can obtain a single valid SAML assertion for the victim, which requires a privileged position or leak path (network MITM on the IdP-to-SP channel, a malicious browser extension, or an assertion exposed in logs or a Referer header); and (3) the attacker can submit that assertion twice within the sub-second race window against /saml/acs. Limiting factors that reduce realistic risk: exploitation only affects installs with SAML enabled, depends on first capturing a valid assertion (not something the attacker can generate), and is timing-dependent on winning a concurrency race. Affected versions are <= 8.4.1; fixed in 8.5.0.

Impact

Signals are mixed and point to a credible-but-conditional risk rather than a drop-everything emergency. The vendor/VulnCheck CVSS 4.0 base score is 8.7 (High) with VC:H/VI:H/VA:H, but the real-world impact is authentication bypass by capture-replay (CWE-294) compounded by a TOCTOU race (CWE-367), not loss of availability - note the input's 'Denial Of Service' tag contradicts both the CWEs and the advisory and should be disregarded. This is NOT in CISA KEV (no active-exploitation signal), no EPSS score was provided, and there is no confirmed working exploit code - only GHSA and VulnCheck advisory references exist, so exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' The vuln.today priority is 'this_week' (not act_now/emergency), which aligns with a serious flaw that still has meaningful preconditions. The biggest tempering factor is the prerequisite chain: the attacker must already possess a valid captured SAML assertion (MITM on the IdP-to-SP path, malicious browser extension, or log/Referer leak) AND win a sub-second concurrency race - conditions that make this better suited to targeted attacks than mass exploitation. One data tension to verify: the supplied CVSS 4.0 vector uses PR:L, but this is a capture-replay of a victim's assertion in which the attacker uses no credentials of their own, so the privilege framing is debatable - the capture/race requirement is more accurately modeled as attack complexity/requirement than as a privilege level.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker positioned to observe one valid SAML assertion for a victim - via a network MITM on the IdP-to-SP path, a malicious browser extension, or an assertion leaked through logs or a Referer header - replays that single assertion concurrently from two separate cookie jars against /saml/acs. Because the nonce check and insert straddle Auth::login() without a transaction and the nonce column lacked a UNIQUE constraint, both requests pass the count-zero check and both establish authenticated sessions as the victim, and a later IdP-driven revocation clears only one of them. No confirmed public exploit code exists at the time of analysis; only vendor/VulnCheck advisories are referenced.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 25, 2026

SAML assertion replay in Snipe-IT 8.4.1 and earlier lets an attacker who has already captured one valid SAML assertion submit it concurrently to /saml/acs and walk away with multiple simultaneous authenticated sessions for the same victim, so a later IdP-side revocation only kills one of them. The flaw is a time-of-check/time-of-use defect in the SP-side nonce deduplication: the nonce column is not UNIQUE and the count-then-insert check straddles Auth::login() without a transaction, letting two parallel POSTs both observe zero rows and both mint a session. Exploitation is conditional rather than universal - SAML SSO must be enabled and correctly configured, the attacker must first obtain a genuine assertion via a man-in-the-middle position, a hostile browser extension, or a log/Referer leak, and must land both requests inside a sub-second window; no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis and there is no KEV listing, so this is a credible but prerequisite-heavy risk best handled in the current weekly patch cycle.

RemediationAI

Upgrade Snipe-IT to 8.5.0 or later, which contains commit 5b0a779c07 (insert-first, catch-on-duplicate nonce handling around Auth::login()) and the migration 2026_05_05_125206_add_unique_index_to_nonces.php that adds the unique('nonce') constraint; run the normal migration step on upgrade so the constraint actually lands, and note that the migration first executes saml:clear_expired_nonces to clear stale rows that would otherwise collide with the new unique index, so expect that cleanup to run as part of the deploy. Full details are in the GitHub advisory at https://github.com/grokability/snipe-it/security/advisories/GHSA-w49g-f2jc-qxhg. Where an immediate upgrade is not possible, the highest-value compensating control is to turn off SAML SSO (saml_enabled = 0) and fall back to local or another directory-backed authentication, which removes the /saml/acs replay path entirely at the cost of losing single sign-on and IdP-enforced policy for that period; the same effect can be approximated by restricting /saml/acs at the reverse proxy to expected IdP-originated traffic, though that is fragile because the endpoint is by design internet-facing. Teams that must keep SAML live can add the UNIQUE constraint on saml_nonces.nonce manually ahead of the code fix to close the race at the schema layer, but this must be paired with purging expired nonces first or the index creation will fail. Because duplicated sessions evade IdP-driven revocation, also invalidate existing Snipe-IT sessions and force re-authentication after patching so any pre-existing replay-derived session is dropped.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Snipe-IT acts as a SAML service provider, and its assertion consumer service handler (app/Http/Controllers/Auth/LoginController.php::loginViaSaml) is responsible for rejecting replayed assertions. It does so by checking the saml_nonces table for a matching nonce and inserting the nonce afterwards, but two design decisions neutralized this: the migration that created the table (2024_01_24_145544_create_saml_nonce_table.php) gave the nonce column a plain non-unique index, and the check and the insert were separated by the Auth::login() call without being wrapped in a database transaction. This is the classic CWE-367 time-of-check/time-of-use pattern applied to CWE-294 authentication bypass by capture-replay: concurrent requests sharing one captured assertion can all read a count of zero, all authenticate the victim, and all persist their copy of the nonce. The impact class is session duplication rather than credential theft - the attacker never learns the victim's password and cannot forge assertions, but gains persistent access that survives IdP-initiated session termination for all but one of the issued sessions. The upstream fix (commit 5b0a779c07) inverts the pattern to insert-first and catch the duplicate-key error around Auth::login(), and a companion migration (2026_05_05_125206_add_unique_index_to_nonces.php) enforces unique('nonce') at the schema level, invoking saml:clear_expired_nonces beforehand to purge stale rows that would otherwise block the constraint.

DescriptionCVE.org

Snipe-IT before 8.5.0 contains a SAML assertion replay vulnerability that allows attackers to reuse captured assertions by exploiting a non-atomic nonce check in the SAML acs handler. Attackers can send concurrent POST requests to /saml/acs with one captured assertion to obtain multiple authenticated victim sessions that evade IdP-driven revocation.

Technical POC Analysis

The bug class is CWE-294 (Authentication Bypass by Capture-Replay), realized through a CWE-367 (TOCTOU) race.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

CVE-2026-116201 is a high-severity flaw in Snipe-IT 8.4.1 (and earlier) that allows an attacker who has intercepted a valid SAML assertion to replay it and obtain multiple concurrent authenticated sessions for the same user, meaning that even after the legitimate session is revoked, the attacker retains access. Exploitation requires SAML SSO to be enabled, a man-in-the-middle or similar position to capture an assertion, and a precisely timed attack, making it a credible but highly conditional risk. Leadership should be concerned because affected organizations could face unauthorized access to asset management systems, potential data exfiltration, and prolonged attacker persistence despite revocation, though the prerequisites reduce the immediate likelihood.

Business Impact: High
Compensating Controls

No vendor patch is available. Interim mitigations include: disabling SAML SSO until a patch is released; restricting network access to /saml/acs to trusted IdP IP ranges; implementing a reverse proxy that enforces unique nonce validation and rate limiting; monitoring for duplicate SAML assertions in logs; and educating users about phishing and man-in-the-middle risks to reduce assertion capture likelihood.
