Vulnerability Assessment

Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires a host running the mlx5 driver on NVIDIA/Mellanox ConnectX hardware with HWS (hardware steering) in use, specifically a configuration where a miss table has been created through the mlx5hws_table_set_default_miss API and a table referencing it is subsequently destroyed - that destroy-with-miss-table path is the trigger. The attacker must be local (AV:L) and already possess the privilege to create and destroy flow-steering tables (PR:L, in practice CAP_NET_ADMIN or equivalent). Limiting factors that reduce realistic risk: it is not remotely reachable, attack complexity is High (AC:H), it is gated on non-default specialized hardware and the HWS feature actually being exercised, and no user interaction by a victim is involved (it is attacker-driven from a privileged local context).

Impact

Signals converge on this being a genuine but low-urgency, non-internet-facing issue rather than a mass-exploitation threat. The CVSS 3.1 base score of 7.0 (High) is driven entirely by the full C:H/I:H/A:H impact of kernel memory corruption, but the exploitability metrics heavily constrain it: AV:L (local only, not remotely reachable), AC:H (high attack complexity), PR:L (requires existing low-level privilege), UI:N, S:U. EPSS reinforces this low real-world threat at 0.21% (10th percentile), and there is no CISA KEV listing and no public exploit identified at time of analysis - the only references are the three kernel.org stable fix commits, which are patches, not PoC. The vuln.today decision label is 'this_week', consistent with a High-severity kernel fix that should be rolled in during the normal patch cycle rather than as an emergency. One conflict to flag: the input Tag 'Information Disclosure' understates the issue - the description is a dangling/garbage list node (a use-after-free-class memory-safety bug) and the vector asserts C:H/I:H/A:H, i.e. integrity and availability impact, not confidentiality alone; verify intended impact with the kernel changelog. Net: a real High-severity local kernel flaw that is a low priority for most fleets because it is local-only, high-complexity, and gated on specific Mellanox/mlx5 hardware steering being in use.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

A local user or container tenant that already holds the privilege to manage mlx5 flow-steering tables (typically CAP_NET_ADMIN) creates a miss table via the mlx5hws_table_set_default_miss API, then deletes a table that points to it, leaving a garbage list node in the miss_tbl list that the kernel later dereferences. Given AV:L and AC:H, this is not a drive-by remote attack but a local attempt to corrupt kernel memory for crash (DoS) or potential privilege escalation. No public exploit identified at time of analysis.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 24, 2026

A use-after-free-style lifetime bug in the net/mlx5 hardware steering (HWS) code can leave a dangling reference in a miss table's list when a flow-steering table that uses a default miss table is destroyed, allowing a local user with the privilege to create and tear down steering tables to corrupt kernel memory. Only hosts running the mlx5 driver against NVIDIA/Mellanox ConnectX hardware with HWS enabled and a miss table registered via the mlx5hws_table_set_default_miss API are affected; the attack surface is local and gated on CAP_NET_ADMIN-equivalent privileges and specialized non-default hardware, with High attack complexity. No public exploit code or active exploitation has been identified at time of analysis, and EPSS is low (0.21%, 10th percentile); fixed kernels are available from the vendor.

Vendor-released patch: update to Linux 6.12.111, 6.18.53 or 7.2 (or the corresponding stable commit 16b81428f7b5f253ab30a998bc4f4ecd1c8823f8, 6efdc212627cecf33b594256ae4460b4c52a126a or 60e9e82f162ab7399373ff2185119289e4f6dc06 from https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/16b81428f7b5f253ab30a998bc4f4ecd1c8823f8 and the linked stable trees), applying the mlx5 HWS fix so the referencing table is unlinked from the miss table's list on destroy. Because the trigger requires the ability to create and destroy flow-steering tables with a default miss table configured, restricting CAP_NET_ADMIN and equivalent capabilities on ConnectX-equipped hosts to trusted administrators, and avoiding untrusted workloads that manage tc/flow-steering rules, limits who can reach the vulnerable path; hosts that do not exercise mlx5 HWS miss tables are not exposed to the described destroy sequence. Refer to https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2026-98895 for the advisory record; patched kernel packages are the complete fix.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The flaw lives in the net/mlx5 HWS (hardware steering) subsystem of the Linux kernel, which manages flow-steering tables offloaded to NVIDIA/Mellanox ConnectX NICs. When a table is designated as a default miss target via mlx5hws_table_set_default_miss, the miss table keeps a list node pointing back to the referencing table; the destroy path for such a table failed to unlink that node from the miss table's list, so the list retains a stale pointer to freed memory. Subsequent traversal or manipulation of that list operates on reallocated or garbage memory, which is why the assessed impact spans high confidentiality, integrity and availability with the High complexity reflecting the need to hit the specific destroy-with-miss-table sequence. The trigger is not described in the available sources beyond that lifecycle path, and the CWE is not assigned in the supplied data. The kernel CPE entries confirm the Linux kernel itself is the affected component, and the upstream stable commits are the authoritative fix artifacts for the 6.12, 6.18 and 7.2 lines.

DescriptionCVE.org

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

net/mlx5: HWS, Handle destroying table that has a miss table

If a table has a miss table that was created by 'mlx5hws_table_set_default_miss' API function, its miss_tbl keeps the table that points to it in a list. If such table is deleted, we need to also remove it from the miss_tbl list, otherwise the node in miss_tbl list will contain garbage.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

CVE-2026-98895 is a high-severity kernel memory corruption flaw affecting Linux hosts that use NVIDIA/Mellanox ConnectX network adapters with hardware steering (HWS) enabled, specifically when a default miss table is registered. A local user with elevated network administration privileges could exploit the bug to corrupt kernel memory, potentially causing system crashes or privilege escalation. While only specialized, non-default hardware configurations are exposed and exploitation requires high attack complexity, leadership should ensure that affected infrastructure-particularly high-value servers or hypervisors using these adapters-is patched promptly to eliminate the local privilege-escalation risk.
