1 technique across 1 tactic: Execution The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires all of: a MongoDB C Driver client build compiled with the Windows-native authentication backend (SSPI); use of the Kerberos/GSSAPI authentication mechanism; and a party able to control the client-side connection configuration so as to supply an excessively long credential (username) value that drives the 32-bit integer wraparound. Limiting factors that reduce real-world risk: the vector is local/configuration-based (AV:L), not remotely reachable; the native-auth Windows build is a non-default, platform-specific deployment; high privilege over the client configuration is required (PR:H); and the trigger has high complexity with a present attack requirement (AC:H/AT:P). The primary outcome is memory corruption and denial of service of the client application itself, not the MongoDB server. |
| Impact | This is a moderate-severity, low-urgency issue - not a priority emergency. The MongoDB-assigned CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:L/AC:H/AT:P/PR:H/UI:N, score 5.7) describes a locally-triggered flaw with high attack complexity, a present attack requirement, and high privileges required: the attacker must already control the client's connection configuration. The dominant impact is availability (VA:H) - a crash/DoS of the client application - with only low confidentiality/integrity impact from memory corruption; no scope change. There is NO CISA KEV listing, NO EPSS score supplied, and NO public exploit identified at time of analysis (the three references are release notes and the CDRIVER-6421 tracker, not proof-of-concept code). The vuln.today decision label is 'this_month', consistent with a patch-when-convenient posture rather than act_now. These signals are internally consistent: a config-dependent, Windows-only, integer-overflow DoS that an attacker who already controls client configuration could trigger - a narrow threat model where the attacker influence needed (control of connection credentials) is itself a significant precondition. Note the self-DoS character: the party supplying the oversized credential is the party whose own client process crashes, which further limits real-world adversarial value. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A MongoDB C Driver client on Windows is built with the native (SSPI) Kerberos/GSSAPI authentication backend and uses connection configuration whose credential values are influenced by an untrusted or attacker-controlled source. That party supplies an excessively long credential value, causing a 32-bit integer wraparound that allocates an undersized heap buffer; the driver then writes past the buffer, corrupting memory and crashing the client application (DoS). No public exploit code has been identified. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 22, 2026
An out-of-bounds heap write in the MongoDB C Driver (libmongoc) can corrupt client process memory and crash the client application when an excessively long credential value is supplied through the client's connection configuration while the Windows-native Kerberos/SSPI authentication path is in use. Only client builds compiled with the Windows SSPI authentication backend and configured for Kerberos/GSSAPI are affected - specifically 1.6.0 through 1.30.13 and 2.0.0 through 2.5.6 - and the flaw is reachable only by a party who already controls the client-side configuration, requires high privileges, and is local/configuration-based rather than remotely reachable (CVSS 4.0 5.7; assessed 3.1 AV:L/AC:H/PR:H). The primary outcome is memory corruption and denial of service of the client process itself, not compromise of the MongoDB server. No public exploit code has been identified, the issue is not in CISA KEV, and vendor-released fixes are available in 1.30.14 and 2.5.7.
RemediationAI
Upgrade the MongoDB C Driver to 1.30.14 (1.x branch) or 2.5.7 (2.x branch), which contain the fix for large usernames in GSSAPI on Windows (CDRIVER-6421; release notes at https://github.com/mongodb/mongo-c-driver/releases/tag/1.30.14 and https://github.com/mongodb/mongo-c-driver/releases/tag/2.5.7). Patch status is vendor-released patch: 1.30.14 and 2.5.7. Where an immediate rebuild is not possible, reduce exposure by ensuring client connection configuration - including the credential/username value used for Kerberos/SSPI - cannot be set or influenced by untrusted parties, and by validating or length-capping that value before it reaches the driver; the trade-off is that this is a config-hygiene control, not a code fix, and it depends on every client configuration path being covered. Building the client against a non-SSPI authentication backend removes the vulnerable code path entirely, at the cost of losing Windows-native Kerberos integration. Rebuilding affected Windows clients is required; no server-side MongoDB change mitigates the client-side memory corruption.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The defect is a CWE-190 integer wraparound in the size computation used when allocating a heap buffer for a credential value (the release note for 1.30.14 describes it as "Fix handling of large usernames for GSSAPI on Windows"). In the Windows-native authentication stack the driver hands the credential to the SSPI/Kerberos (GSSAPI) mechanism, and the 32-bit length arithmetic can wrap when an overly long value is supplied, producing an undersized allocation that is then written past its bounds. The vulnerable code path exists only in builds compiled with the Windows SSPI backend; other platforms and authentication backends are outside the affected code. The supplied CVSS 4.0 vector carries AT:P and AC:H, and the independent assessment records the same high-complexity, present-attack-requirement profile (AV:L/AC:H/PR:H), so the practical exposure is a specially crafted local client configuration rather than a network-facing attack; the sources do not describe any further trigger conditions beyond the oversized credential value.

Trigger requires control of the client connection configuration (PR:H) and is local/config-only (AV:L); the large-value integer wraparound makes it high-complexity (AC:H); impact is mainly a client crash (A:H) with limited memory-corruption C/I.

2DescriptionCVE.org
A 32-bit integer wraparound in the MongoDB C Driver's Windows-only Kerberos/SSPI authentication code can cause an undersized heap buffer to be allocated when an excessively long credential value is supplied in the client's connection configuration. A party able to control that client-side configuration, in conjunction with the affected authentication mechanism, can cause the driver to write outside the bounds of the allocated buffer. This may result in corruption of client process memory and denial of service of the client application. The issue affects only client builds compiled with the Windows-native authentication backend.
