| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires the attacker to deliver an email whose subject contains CRLF sequences to a Roundcube Webmail user running a version before 1.6.20 or 1.7.x before 1.7.5, AND requires that victim to subsequently forward the received message using the 'forward as attachment' compose feature - it is this feature that copies the subject verbatim into the generated attachment (MIME part) name. Limiting factors: the attack cannot succeed without the specific victim-initiated forward-as-attachment action (effective user interaction not reflected in the input UI:N), it is confined to MIME part header injection with only a low integrity impact, and it yields no confidentiality or availability loss and no code execution. |
| Impact | This is a genuinely low-to-moderate priority issue despite the scope-change in the vector. The input CVSS 4.0 (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:C/C:N/I:L/A:N) reflects a network vector with high attack complexity, no required privileges, and only a LOW integrity impact (no confidentiality or availability loss) - the scope change (S:C) is what inflates an otherwise minor header-injection flaw. No EPSS score was provided, there is no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit was supplied, so exploitation signals point to no public exploit identified at time of analysis. CONFLICTING SIGNAL: the vector states UI:N, but the description makes clear a victim user must actively forward a received message 'as an attachment' for the injection to occur - this is user interaction, so the UI:N metric appears understated and real-world triggering depends on a specific victim action. Combined with AC:H, this is a vendor-patched, low-impact integrity flaw that should be remediated on a normal patch cycle rather than treated as an emergency. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker sends an email to a Roundcube user with a subject line containing CRLF sequences. When that user later forwards the received message as an attachment, Roundcube uses the subject verbatim as the attachment name, allowing the embedded CRLF to inject arbitrary MIME part headers into the outgoing message. No public exploit code was identified; exploitation requires the victim to perform the forward-as-attachment action. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 22, 2026
Mail header injection in Roundcube Webmail before 1.6.20 and 1.7.x before 1.7.5 lets a remote attacker inject arbitrary MIME part headers into an outgoing message when a victim forwards a crafted email as an attachment, because the received subject is reused verbatim as the generated attachment name without neutralizing CRLF sequences. Exploitation is not automatic: it requires the victim to receive the crafted message and then invoke the 'forward as attachment' compose action, and the assessed impact is limited to low integrity with no confidentiality or availability loss and no code execution (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:N/I:L/A:N). Fixes are available in Roundcube 1.6.20 and 1.7.5; no public exploit was identified at time of analysis.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to Roundcube Webmail 1.6.20 or 1.7.5, which contain the vendor fix (advisory: https://roundcube.net/news/2026/10/19/security-updates-1.6.20-and-1.7.5; release tags: https://github.com/roundcube/roundcubemail/releases/tag/1.6.20 and https://github.com/roundcube/roundcubemail/releases/tag/1.7.5). If an immediate upgrade is not possible, backport the upstream commit 4c3291ce9df9e1d3b45330d0854d65cd8efbeee9 (or the corresponding 1.6.x commit c325953a251d0132f1909569b3eac0b974095dd4), which collapses whitespace in the generated attachment name and defaults it to 'message_rfc822'; this is a small, targeted change but requires code deployment and regression testing of the compose/forward flow. Because there is no reliable configuration toggle for this specific code path, the main compensating control is to restrict or disable the forward-as-attachment compose option for untrusted users where operationally feasible, accepting reduced user functionality; MTA-level subject filtering is not a dependable substitute because Roundcube reads the stored subject via IMAP and legitimate messages can contain unusual whitespace.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Roundcube Webmail is a PHP-based IMAP webmail client; the vulnerable code path is program/actions/mail/compose.php::write_forward_attachments(), which builds the MIME part name for a message forwarded as a message/rfc822 attachment. Prior to the fix, the received message subject was copied directly into that name (truncated to 64 characters), so CRLF sequences in the subject could break out of the attachment's Content-Type/name parameter context and inject attacker-controlled MIME part headers into the outgoing message. The upstream commit 4c3291ce9df9e1d3b45330d0854d65cd8efbeee9 changes this to default the name to 'message_rfc822' and, when a subject is present, collapse all whitespace (notably \r and \n) to single spaces, trim, and then truncate to 64 characters. The assigned CWE-99 (Improper Control of Resource Identifiers) describes the root cause class: an untrusted inbound value is used to construct a resource identifier (the MIME attachment name) without proper neutralization. Scope is changed (S:C) because the injection crosses from the inbound message's subject into the structure of the outgoing message; the practical effect is limited to low integrity, with no confidentiality or availability impact.

Attacker needs no privileges to send the crafted email (PR:N), but exploitation depends on the victim forwarding it as attachment (UI:R, AC:H); only outgoing-message integrity is affected (I:L, S:C, C:N/A:N).

DescriptionCVE.org
Roundcube Webmail before 1.6.20 and 1.7.x before 1.7.5 is affected by a mail header injection vulnerability when a message is forwarded as an attachment. The subject of the forwarded message was used verbatim to generate the attachment name, so a received message whose subject contains CRLF sequences could inject arbitrary MIME part headers into the outgoing message. Upstream fixed this in the commit “Fix mail header injection via subject of a message forwarded as attachment”, which collapses whitespace in the generated name.
