| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires the Roundcube 'password' plugin to be enabled and configured with a driver whose error text an attacker can influence - the description specifically names a backend such as the DirectAdmin API returning attacker-controlled error text. The vulnerable code path is the password driver error-response handler in password.php/directadmin.php, where driver message text was concatenated into the user-facing message without HTML escaping. A victim must actively initiate a password-change operation (UI:R) for the malicious error to be rendered, and the affected versions are Roundcube before 1.6.20 and 1.7.x before 1.7.5. Limiting factors: the attacker does not control Roundcube directly but must sit on or compromise the password backend, the password plugin must be deployed (it is optional), and user interaction is mandatory - making opportunistic mass exploitation impractical. |
| Impact | This is a genuinely low-to-moderate priority issue despite its CWE-79 (XSS) classification, and the signals are internally consistent rather than conflicting. The provided CVSS 3.1 vector (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N, base 4.7, Medium) correctly reflects several dampening factors: AC:H because the attacker cannot simply send a payload to Roundcube but must control or influence the error text returned by a password-change backend driver (the description cites the DirectAdmin API); UI:R because a victim must actively initiate a password change through the password plugin; and only Low confidentiality/integrity impact with no availability impact (C:L/I:L/A:N). The scope change (S:C) is the one signal that raises severity, reflecting that injected script executes in the victim's authenticated Roundcube session context. No EPSS score was supplied in the input, so exploitation probability cannot be quantified from the data. The CVE is NOT in CISA KEV and no proof-of-concept is referenced, so this is no public exploit identified at time of analysis. The PR:N marking means Roundcube itself requires no authentication from the attacker's perspective, but the real precondition - control over the backend driver's error response - is a meaningful barrier not captured by PR. Overall: a real but hard-to-exploit, high-complexity, user-interaction-dependent XSS, not an urgent mass-exploitation threat. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A hosting provider's password-change backend (e.g., a DirectAdmin server the attacker controls or can influence) returns an error message containing an embedded HTML/script payload. When a Roundcube user attempts to change their password via the password plugin, the unescaped driver error text is concatenated into the on-screen message and the script executes in the victim's authenticated webmail session. No public exploit code is referenced in the available data. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 22, 2026
Cross-site scripting in the optional password plugin of Roundcube Webmail (before 1.6.20, and 1.7.x before 1.7.5) allows a hostile or compromised password backend - the advisory names the DirectAdmin API - to inject script into the webmail interface by returning crafted error text during a password-change attempt. The driver's message was concatenated into the user-facing error string without HTML escaping, so the payload executes in the victim's Roundcube session and can read or act on mail content within that origin (scope change). Exploitation requires the password plugin to be enabled and a victim to actually submit a password change (UI:R), which limits mass abuse; the CVSS vector rates it 4.7 with PR:N but high attack complexity, and no public exploit code or CISA KEV listing was identified at time of analysis. Vendor-released patches exist in 1.6.20 and 1.7.5.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade to Roundcube Webmail 1.6.20 (for the 1.6.x line) or 1.7.5 (for the 1.7.x line), available from https://github.com/roundcube/roundcubemail/releases/tag/1.6.20 and https://github.com/roundcube/roundcubemail/releases/tag/1.7.5; administrators who cannot upgrade immediately can cherry-pick commit 16bbca70b668e85332f23333946a764865bead94 (or 94298856ee67ff7817cc4def2adb634be91e28c7), which restores escaping by having password.php pass driver messages through rcube::Q($message, 'strict', false). If the password plugin is not required, disable it (remove or comment out 'password' in the plugins array of config/config.inc.php) - this eliminates the vulnerable code path entirely but removes users' self-service password change capability, and its effect must be communicated since users will otherwise attempt a non-functional UI. As a containment measure, harden and restrict the password backend so untrusted text cannot reach Roundcube: lock the DirectAdmin API to a trusted management network, enforce TLS with certificate validation for the API endpoint, and ensure only the Roundcube host can reach it - this reduces the number of parties able to supply malicious error text but does not fix the missing output encoding. Adding a Content-Security-Policy to the webmail vhost can blunt script execution from injected markup as defense in depth, but Roundcube's reliance on inline assets means a strict policy may break the UI and requires careful testing before rollout. Verify remediation by attempting a password change that returns an error and confirming the text is HTML-encoded in the rendered response.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Roundcube is a PHP webmail client whose password plugin delegates credential changes to pluggable backend drivers (directadmin.php, ldap, sql, etc.). CWE-79 applies because the driver returned an associative array whose 'message' element was treated as trusted text: the DirectAdmin driver passed the API's response text through strip_tags() only, and password.php's _save() appended that value directly to the $reason string presented to the user, so any HTML - including event-handler or script-bearing markup that survives strip_tags - was rendered unescaped. The upstream commit "Fix XSS issue in handling of password driver error responses" relocates the escaping responsibility to the presentation layer: directadmin.php now returns the raw response text, and password.php wraps it with rcube::Q($message, 'strict', false), which performs strict HTML entity encoding. The CVSS scope change (S:C) reflects that script running in the Roundcube origin gains access to the authenticated webmail session rather than the backend that supplied the text. Because the injection point is the backend's error string, the attacker's position is upstream of Roundcube - they must control or compromise the password service (for example by spoofing or interfering with the DirectAdmin API response), not Roundcube itself, and the malicious markup is only rendered after the user initiates a password change.

DescriptionCVE.org
Roundcube Webmail before 1.6.20 and 1.7.x before 1.7.5 is affected by a cross-site scripting vulnerability in the password plugin. Error text returned by a password driver was concatenated into the message presented to the user without HTML escaping, so a backend able to influence that text, such as the DirectAdmin API, could inject script into the Roundcube interface. Upstream fixed this in the commit “Fix XSS issue in handling of password driver error responses”, which escapes the driver message before display.
