| Exploitation Conditions | Requires Roundcube Webmail configured to use the password plugin's Modoboa driver, which implies a Modoboa mail-hosting backend - this is a non-default configuration, so installations using other password drivers are unaffected. The attacker must be an authenticated Roundcube user (PR:L). The limiting factor that drives AC:H is that exploitation hinges on the Modoboa API account search returning a different account as the first entry, ordering the attacker does not control; success is therefore conditional and opportunistic rather than reliable. No user interaction by a victim is needed. |
| Impact | This is a medium-severity (CVSS 6.8) incorrect-authorization flaw (CWE-863). The CVSS vector CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N shows a network-reachable issue but with high attack complexity and required low-level privileges (an authenticated Roundcube user). No EPSS score, KEV listing, or POC indicator was provided in the input, so exploitation status is: no public exploit identified at time of analysis. The high attack complexity is meaningful here - success depends on the Modoboa API account-search returning a victim's account as the first entry, which the attacker does not reliably control, making exploitation opportunistic rather than deterministic. Combined with the fact that the bug only affects deployments that specifically configure the password plugin's Modoboa driver (not the default), real-world risk is lower than the 6.8 score suggests for the general Roundcube population. This should be patched on Modoboa-backed deployments but does not rise to emergency priority. Missing data to note explicitly: EPSS probability not provided, CISA KEV status not confirmed in input, and POC availability unknown. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | On a Roundcube deployment using the password plugin's Modoboa driver, a legitimately authenticated user submits a password change. Because the driver takes the first entry of the Modoboa API account-search result instead of matching the authenticated username, the new password can be written to a different account, enabling takeover of that account. No public exploit was identified, and the high CVSS attack complexity reflects that success depends on the API returning a non-attacker account first. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 22, 2026
Password changes in Roundcube Webmail can be applied to the wrong mailbox when the password plugin uses the Modoboa driver, affecting releases before 1.6.20 and 1.7.x before 1.7.5. An authenticated Roundcube user can trigger this over the network, but exploitation is conditional on the Modoboa API account search returning another account first, so it is opportunistic rather than reliable. No public exploit was identified at time of analysis; vendor patches are available in 1.6.20 and 1.7.5.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade to Roundcube Webmail 1.6.20 or 1.7.5 (or later) using the releases at https://github.com/roundcube/roundcubemail/releases/tag/1.6.20 and https://github.com/roundcube/roundcubemail/releases/tag/1.7.5; the advisory is https://roundcube.net/news/2026/10/19/security-updates-1.6.20-and-1.7.5. If immediate upgrade is not possible, apply the upstream commits e6a77272a5837e7104238a2f270ac412ff0a8ff3 and 3d9d05bfe2da7f93b8d47e68cadab22bb67e6cc9 to plugins/password/drivers/modoboa.php, which adds exact username matching and fails closed when no match is found. As a compensating control, disable the password plugin or switch the password driver away from Modoboa on affected hosts; disabling the plugin prevents users from changing passwords through Roundcube, and switching drivers requires a supported alternate backend. Restricting the Modoboa API credentials used by Roundcube to the minimum necessary and monitoring password-change events for unexpected accounts can reduce exposure but does not correct the flawed account selection.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Roundcube Webmail is a PHP webmail client whose password plugin delegates password changes to backend drivers, including a Modoboa driver that calls the Modoboa API to search accounts and then updates the selected account. In affected code, plugins/password/drivers/modoboa.php took the first API result ($decoded[0]->pk) and built the password-change request from that record without verifying that it matched the authenticated Roundcube username. This is CWE-863 incorrect authorization: the driver did not bind the password-change operation to the requesting user. The upstream fix iterates the API result, selects the entry whose username exactly matches $username, builds the update body from that account, and returns PASSWORD_CONNECT_ERROR if no match is found. The assessed CVSS 3.1 vector AV:N/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:N reflects network reachability, authenticated low-privilege access, no victim interaction, high confidentiality and integrity impact, and high attack complexity because result ordering is not attacker-controlled.

DescriptionCVE.org
Roundcube Webmail before 1.6.20 and 1.7.x before 1.7.5 is affected by an incorrect authorization vulnerability in the Modoboa driver of the password plugin. The driver took the first entry of the account search result returned by the Modoboa API instead of matching the authenticated user, so a password change could be applied to a different account. Upstream fixed this in the commit “Fix bug where Password Modoboa driver could change password for another account”, which selects the account whose username matches and fails if none does.
