MITRE ATT&CK
2 techniques across 2 tactics: Execution, Privilege Escalation The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires a victim running Google Chrome on Android at a version prior to 156.0.8078.47 to actively load attacker-controlled content, specifically a crafted HTML page that reaches the WebAppInstalls code path (UI:R). No authentication or special privileges are needed (PR:N, unauthenticated), and default configurations are affected, but the mandatory user interaction (visiting or rendering the malicious page) and the Android-only scope limit realistic exploitation; impact is further constrained to reading memory within the renderer sandbox, with no sandbox escape, write, or denial-of-service capability indicated. |
| Impact | Multiple signals converge on a genuinely low-to-moderate priority rather than an urgent emergency. The CVSS 3.1 vector (6.5, AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N) describes a network-reachable, low-complexity, unauthenticated flaw, but one that requires user interaction (UI:R) and yields only confidentiality impact with no integrity or availability loss, consistent with the description's 'potentially read memory inside the sandbox.' Google itself rated the Chromium security severity as Medium, which aligns with a sandbox-bounded information leak rather than a sandbox escape or RCE. EPSS is low at 0.18 percent (8th percentile), there is no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit was identified in the provided data, so there is no evidence of active exploitation. These signals are mutually consistent (low EPSS, Medium vendor severity, no KEV/POC), so this is a patch-in-normal-cadence issue, not a drop-everything priority. One caveat: CWE-119 and the 'memory corruption' wording could in principle be leveraged as a primitive in a chained exploit, and the CVSS C:H rating is somewhat generous for a bounded sandbox read, so treat C:H as an upper bound and verify the true data exposure with Google's advisory. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A remote attacker hosts a crafted HTML page and lures an Android Chrome user to visit it (UI:R). Rendering the page triggers the memory-corruption flaw in the WebAppInstalls component, letting the attacker read memory within the renderer sandbox and potentially leak sensitive in-process data. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis, and the low complexity (AC:L) means a working trigger would be reliable once developed. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 21, 2026
Memory corruption in the WebAppInstalls component of Google Chrome for Android before version 156.0.8078.47 lets a remote attacker who convinces a user to open a crafted HTML page trigger an out-of-bounds memory read inside the renderer sandbox, potentially exposing process memory contents. The attack is unauthenticated (PR:N) but requires the victim to actively load the malicious page (UI:R), and the weakness is confined to Chrome on Android with default configurations affected. Impact is limited to information disclosure within the sandbox with no write primitive, sandbox escape, or denial-of-service shown; no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis, EPSS is 0.18% (8th percentile), and the issue is not in CISA KEV. Our independent assessment scores confidentiality impact as Low (CVSS 3.1 base ~4.3: AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N) rather than the NVD-style C:H, reflecting the sandbox-contained read primitive, making this a low-to-moderate priority patch rather than an emergency.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade Google Chrome for Android to 156.0.8078.47 or later via the Google Play Store, then verify the installed version under Settings > About Chrome or chrome://version before considering the device remediated; the fix is documented in the stable-channel advisory at https://chromereleases.googleblog.com/2026/10/stable-channel-update-for-desktop_02018666648.html. Because Chrome updates on Android can be deferred by user settings or blocked on managed devices, push the version floor through EMM/MDM policy and inventory any handsets still below 156.0.8078.47. No dedicated feature toggle exists to disable WebAppInstalls independently of Chrome, so interim compensating controls necessarily trade functionality for risk reduction: restrict high-risk browsing on unpatched handsets (allowlist-based browsing or disable Chrome in a work profile, at the cost of blocking legitimate web apps), and discourage users from following unsolicited links to pages that prompt PWA installation, since exploitation requires the victim to load the crafted HTML page. Enterprise policy can block PWA/WebAPK installation prompts on managed Android devices as a stopgap, but this does not remove the underlying memory-corruption path and should be reverted once all devices reach 156.0.8078.47.

Technical ContextAI · show details
WebAppInstalls is the Chromium subsystem that handles Progressive Web App / WebAPK installation flows on Android - parsing installability metadata, manifest data, and install-related IPC between the renderer and the browser-side install service. The flaw is classified under CWE-119 (Improper Restriction of Operations within the Bounds of a Memory Buffer), i.e. an out-of-bounds memory access reachable when a crafted HTML page drives the install code path with malformed input. Because Chrome's site isolation and renderer sandbox confine the faulting code, the primitive is bounded to reading memory inside the compromised renderer process rather than arbitrary cross-origin or browser-process read; no sandbox escape chain is described in the associated Chromium issue (issues.chromium.org/issues/518108422). The vulnerability class - bounds-check failures in manifest/install parsing - is a recurring pattern in Chromium's install and PWA code, and the fix landed in the stable channel roll to 156.0.8078.47. Note that the discrepancy between the NVD-style C:H and our assessed C:L is material: the practical exposure is renderer-local memory that may contain same-process data such as rendered content or heap remnants, not an unbounded confidentiality breach.
