Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires the ApostropheCMS cross-host or cross-locale session migration feature to be in active use (including the passport-bridge cross-locale authentication flow), as this is what places the single-use bearer session token into a redirect URL. The attacker must (1) obtain that token from the URL - e.g. via Referer-header leakage to another host, proxy/server logs, browser history, or an intercepted/shared link - and (2) redeem it while it is still valid and not yet consumed by the legitimate client. Limiting factors: the token is single-use and time-bounded, forcing the attacker to win a race against the victim's first use; environments not using cross-host or cross-locale migration are not exposed. Affects ApostropheCMS before 4.33.0 and passport-bridge before 1.6.1.

Impact

This is a genuine but moderate-severity session-handling flaw (CWE-598: sensitive information in a GET/redirect URL), not a critical priority. The vendor CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N/VC:L/VI:L/VA:L) yields 5.3 (Medium), reflecting limited low-confidentiality/integrity/availability impact rather than full compromise. No EPSS score was provided, the CVE is NOT in CISA KEV, and no public exploit was supplied - so exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' The realistic barrier is a race condition: the attacker must obtain the single-use bearer token from the redirect URL AND redeem it while still unconsumed, before the legitimate client's first use. This timing/interception requirement meaningfully lowers practical risk below what the 'AC:L/AT:N' metrics imply - I would argue an attack requirement (4.0 AT:P / 3.1 AC:H) is more honest. Combined with the product's small deployment footprint, this is a real issue to patch but unlikely to see widespread opportunistic exploitation. The input CVSS uses PR:L; the attacker does not necessarily hold privileges themselves but rides an authenticated migration flow, so PR:L is defensible.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

During ApostropheCMS cross-host or cross-locale session migration (including the passport-bridge cross-locale flow), a valid single-use bearer session token is embedded in a redirect URL. An attacker who can observe that URL - via Referer header leakage to a third-party host, proxy/server access logs, browser history, or a shared link - redeems the still-unconsumed token first and adopts the victim's session. No public proof-of-concept was provided; success depends on winning the race before the legitimate client consumes the token.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 20, 2026

ApostropheCMS before 4.33.0 can expose single-use bearer session tokens in cross-host or cross-locale session-migration redirect URLs, letting a low-privileged remote attacker who captures and redeems an unconsumed token before the legitimate client does adopt the associated session. The same token-in-URL pattern affects @apostrophecms/passport-bridge before 1.6.1 in its cross-locale authentication flow. This is a moderate-severity CWE-598 session-handling flaw (assessed CVSS:3.1 5.3, AV:N/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:L/A:L), with no public exploit identified at time of analysis and no CISA KEV confirmation.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patches are available: upgrade ApostropheCMS to 4.33.0 and @apostrophecms/passport-bridge to 1.6.1, as documented in GHSA-hhvr-8m24-qqr3 and the apostrophe@4.33.0 release. If immediate upgrade is not possible, disable cross-host and cross-locale session migration and the passport-bridge cross-locale authentication flow until patched; this removes the token-in-URL exposure but breaks cross-host/cross-locale session portability and any SSO-style flow that depends on it. Also set Referrer-Policy: no-referrer on redirect responses and pages handling migration, avoid logging full redirect URLs, scrub existing proxy/server logs for token-bearing URLs, and keep token lifetimes short with strict single-use enforcement; these are compensating controls, not substitutes for the fixed versions.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The root cause is CWE-598, use of GET request method with sensitive query strings, implemented here as placement of a single-use bearer session token in a redirect URL during cross-host or cross-locale session migration. ApostropheCMS is a Node.js CMS; its migration feature and the @apostrophecms/passport-bridge cross-locale flow pass the token through the browser redirect so the destination can adopt the session. That URL can be disclosed via Referer headers, browser history, proxy or server logs, shared links, or other URL-observing intermediaries. Because the token is single-use and time-bounded, exploitation requires the attacker to obtain it and win a race against the victim's first redemption; environments that do not use cross-host or cross-locale migration are not exposed. CPE data identifies cpe:2.3:a:apostrophecms:apostrophe:* and cpe:2.3:a:@apostrophecms:passport-bridge:* as the affected components.

DescriptionCVE.org

ApostropheCMS is an open-source Node.js content management system. Prior to 4.33.0 of ApostropheCMS and 1.6.1 of passport-bridge, cross-host or cross-locale session migration places a single-use bearer session token in a redirect URL. A client that obtains and redeems a still-valid, unconsumed token before its first use can adopt the associated session, including through the passport-bridge cross-locale flow. This issue is fixed in ApostropheCMS 4.33.0 and passport-bridge 1.6.1.
