| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires that the target ApostropheCMS site exposes a piece/page type via a public REST API configured with publicApiProjection, AND that the sensitive field is excluded from that projection yet still defined as searchable or sortable - this specific combination is the prerequisite, not a generic 'misconfiguration'. Limiting factors: the attacker gains only inference via search-membership and sort-ordering oracles, never a direct dump of the hidden field, so values must be guessed/confirmed candidate-by-candidate; the attack is unauthenticated (PR:N) and remote, but yields no integrity or availability impact and only partial confidentiality loss. Sites on 4.34.0 or later, or those whose excluded fields are neither searchable nor sortable, are not exposed. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but low-urgency information-disclosure issue, and the signals are internally consistent rather than conflicting. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N, base 5.3) correctly reflects a network-reachable, low-complexity, unauthenticated weakness with only Low confidentiality impact and no integrity or availability impact - matching the description, which stresses that returned fields stay filtered by the projection and that the flaw enables only targeted inference about hidden values, not an unrestricted field dump. No EPSS score, KEV listing, or POC was supplied in the intelligence set: there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and no evidence of active exploitation, so the absence of those signals (not a conflict) keeps real-world risk modest. The practical priority is low-to-moderate: the oracle requires an attacker to already know which hidden searchable/sortable field and candidate values to probe, making this most relevant where sensitive data sits in excluded-but-searchable fields of a public API type. Note the dependency on configuration - the issue only exists for a public REST API type using publicApiProjection where the hidden field is searchable or sortable - which the base CVSS score does not capture; verify this deployment condition before treating it as exposed. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An unauthenticated attacker repeatedly queries a public ApostropheCMS REST API endpoint whose type uses publicApiProjection, varying search filters and sort parameters against a field that is excluded from the projection but remains searchable/sortable. By observing which documents appear in results (search membership) and their relative sort order, the attacker infers the hidden field's values for targeted records. No public exploit code is identified at time of analysis; exploitation requires only scripted HTTP requests and knowledge of the target field. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 20, 2026
ApostropheCMS releases prior to 4.34.0 can be made to reveal information about fields that a public REST API projection deliberately excludes, because search-membership and sort-ordering responses still behave differently depending on hidden searchable or sortable field values. Unauthenticated remote attackers who can query a publicly exposed piece or page type configured with publicApiProjection can therefore test candidate values one at a time, though the projection continues to filter all returned fields, so this is targeted inference rather than an unrestricted dump. The exposure is conditional on a specific configuration - an excluded field that remains searchable or sortable - and no public exploit code or confirmed active exploitation was identified at time of analysis.
RemediationAI
Upgrade ApostropheCMS to 4.34.0 or later (release tag apostrophe@4.34.0), which addresses this issue along with several other security fixes shipped in the same release; the relevant upstream fixes are commits 06e4b377f3c360f9e89c32dccd7e505ad5ddf498 and 40b989b1a9dd23d30029b8ce7668634265cfe5ea, and details are in advisory GHSA-rqgm-cfrp-4hx8. If an immediate upgrade is not possible, audit every public REST API configuration that uses publicApiProjection and remove the searchable or sortable flags from any field excluded from the projection - the trade-off is that legitimate search and sorting on those fields stops working for that API, so validate the change against client applications. As a further interim measure, restrict anonymous access to the affected API endpoints (for example via reverse-proxy authentication, IP allowlisting, or disabling the public API type entirely) and log or rate-limit repeated search and sort requests that target excluded fields; these controls reduce exposure to the inference attack but do not fix the underlying query-layer behavior, and blocking the endpoint will break any legitimate consumers of that public API. Upgrading remains the only complete remediation.

Technical ContextAI · show details
ApostropheCMS is an open-source Node.js content management system that stores content as documents (pieces and pages) and can expose them over a REST API. When a public API type is configured with publicApiProjection, the CMS restricts which document fields are returned to anonymous callers. The flaw (CWE-200, exposure of sensitive information) is that this projection filtering was applied only to the returned payload, not to the query machinery: the API still let callers pass search terms and sort parameters that were evaluated against fields excluded from the projection, provided those fields were marked searchable or sortable. As a result, whether a query matched at all (search-membership) and the ordering of results (sort-ordering) acted as boolean and comparative oracles about hidden values. Because searchable and sortable indexes are commonly applied to fields such as internal labels, status flags, or unpublished metadata, an attacker could confirm guesses about those values without ever seeing them in a response. The CVSS vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N, C:L/I:N/A:N) reflects unauthenticated remote access with partial confidentiality impact and no integrity or availability effect; the root cause is incomplete enforcement of the projection boundary in the query layer rather than a memory-safety or injection issue.

ApostropheCMS is an open-source Node.js content management system. Prior to 4.34.0, a public REST API type that uses publicApiProjection can expose excluded searchable or sortable field information through search membership and sort ordering oracles. Returned fields remain filtered by the projection, so the issue permits targeted inference about hidden values rather than an unrestricted field dump. This issue is fixed in version 4.34.0.
