The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up.

Exploitation Conditions

Requires an authenticated account administrator (PR:H) with permission to author Help Center / knowledge-base articles, and the Help Center must be publicly reachable so visitors load the article. The specific trigger is a CommonMark angle-bracket link destination of the form [text](<URL" ...>) placed in a video-embed link, where embedded double quotes escape the unescaped iframe src attribute built by render_embed_from_match. Exploitation is LIMITED by: the administrator privilege requirement (not available to unauthenticated or low-privileged users), the need for a public visitor to actually view the crafted article (UI:P, passive but still required), and the affected version being any release before 4.14.0.

Impact

This is a genuine but comparatively low-priority stored XSS (CVSS 4.0 base 4.8, Medium). The strongest mitigating signal is PR:H: per the description and the CVSS vector, exploitation requires an existing account administrator to author the malicious Help Center article, so this is a privileged-insider / compromised-admin-account issue rather than a path for anonymous attackers. UI:P further requires that a public visitor subsequently load the poisoned article. No EPSS score was provided, the CVE is not in CISA KEV, and no public POC is referenced, so exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' The source-code diff (CGI.escapeHTML applied to captured values in render_embed_from_match) independently confirms the root cause and the fix, raising confidence that the technical mechanism is real. Net: a legitimate confirmed-and-patched vulnerability, but the administrator privilege requirement makes it far lower real-world risk than its CWE-79 class would suggest for an unauthenticated flaw; prioritize behind any network-reachable unauthenticated issues. Note the privilege boundary is nuanced - the injector is a trusted admin but the victim is an untrusted public visitor, which is why the vendor assigned a scope/subsequent-system impact (SC:L/SI:L).

Exploit ScenarioDerived

A malicious or compromised account administrator authors a Chatwoot Help Center article containing a video-embed link whose angle-bracket destination includes double quotes, breaking out of the unescaped iframe src attribute in render_embed_from_match. When a public visitor opens the article, the injected JavaScript executes in their browser and exfiltrates the cw_conversation widget token. No public exploit code is identified at time of analysis, though the fix commit demonstrates the exact payload shape.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 20, 2026

Stored cross-site scripting in Chatwoot before 4.14.0 allows authenticated account administrators with Help Center authoring rights to inject JavaScript into publicly visible articles via crafted video-embed links that break out of an iframe src attribute. The flaw is rated CVSS 4.0 base 4.8 (Medium) and requires a public visitor to view the crafted article; no public exploit was identified at time of analysis. Vendor-released patch: 4.14.0.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to Chatwoot 4.14.0 or later; the vendor fix is in PR 14140 (https://github.com/chatwoot/chatwoot/pull/14140) and commit 2192af80f405c70e3021191ff8b3f7e539c35e9d (https://github.com/chatwoot/chatwoot/commit/2192af80f405c70e3021191ff8b3f7e539c35e9d), with release notes at https://github.com/chatwoot/chatwoot/releases/tag/v4.14.0. If upgrading cannot be done immediately, restrict Help Center article authoring to trusted administrators, audit and remove video-embed links using CommonMark angle-bracket destinations that contain double quotes, and limit public Help Center exposure so that crafted articles cannot be loaded until patched. These controls reduce exposure but do not eliminate stored payloads; restricting authoring may slow content workflows, and hiding the Help Center can affect customer support access.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The issue is in Chatwoot's custom Markdown renderer, specifically render_embed_from_match in lib/custom_markdown_renderer.rb, which builds iframe HTML for video embeds. CommonMark angle-bracket link destinations such as [text](<URL>) permit double-quote characters, and the captured value was interpolated unescaped into the iframe src attribute. A crafted video-embed link can therefore break out of the attribute and store script that executes when the Help Center article is rendered (CWE-79). The upstream fix switches the template interpolation to CGI.escapeHTML(value) and adds tests confirming that a captured YouTube video_id containing a quote is rendered as &quot; while legitimate alphanumeric IDs remain unchanged. CPE cpe:2.3:a:chatwoot:chatwoot:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* covers releases before 4.14.0.

DescriptionCVE.org

Chatwoot before 4.14.0 contains a stored cross-site scripting vulnerability that allows account administrators to inject JavaScript by crafting video-embed links in Help Center articles. Attackers can use angle-bracket link destinations with double quotes to break out of the unescaped iframe src attribute in render_embed_from_match, executing scripts for public visitors and stealing cw_conversation widget tokens.
