| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires three concrete conditions. First, the target must run an aiohttp web server at a version prior to 3.14.4. Second, the attacker must send an HTTP/1.1 request using absolute-form request-target syntax (e.g. 'GET https://host/path HTTP/1.1' or 'http://...') so that a scheme is embedded in the target. Third - the key limiting factor captured by the CVSS AT:P metric - the application code must use Request.scheme to make a security decision (such as setting the Secure flag on cookies, enforcing or redirecting to HTTPS, or deciding whether a connection is trusted); applications that never read Request.scheme for security purposes are unaffected. No authentication and no user interaction are required (PR:N/UI:N), but the dependency on application-side use of Request.scheme materially narrows real-world exploitability. |
| Impact | The provided CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:P/PR:N/UI:N/VC:L/VI:L/VA:N, base 6.3 Medium) paints a consistent picture of a network-reachable, unauthenticated flaw with low confidentiality and integrity impact and - critically - an attack requirement (AT:P) that reflects the real precondition: the target application must actually consume Request.scheme to make a security decision. This AT:P metric is the single most important signal, because it explains why a 'network/unauthenticated' bug is only Medium rather than Critical - the aiohttp parser bug is necessary but not sufficient on its own. There is no exploitation status to confirm: KEV is not listed, no POC is referenced, and no EPSS probability was supplied in the input, so exploitation likelihood cannot be quantified from the data given and should not be assumed high. Signals are internally consistent (no CVSS-vs-description conflict), but the EPSS score is MISSING and cannot be inferred. Net assessment: this is a legitimate but conditional transport-security-downgrade/upgrade issue rather than a broad-impact remote code execution - a real priority only for the subset of aiohttp deployments whose application logic trusts Request.scheme for cookie-secure flags, HTTPS enforcement, or redirect decisions. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker sends a crafted absolute-form request-target (e.g. 'GET https://victim/path HTTP/1.1') over a plaintext HTTP connection to an aiohttp web server prior to 3.14.4. Because the parser trusts the scheme embedded in the request-target rather than the actual connection protocol, an application that checks Request.scheme to decide whether the connection is secure is tricked into treating the unencrypted request as HTTPS (or vice-versa), bypassing secure-cookie, HSTS, or HTTPS-redirect logic. No public exploit code is identified, and success depends on the application relying on Request.scheme for a security decision. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 19, 2026
aiohttp web servers running versions prior to 3.14.4 derive the value of Request.scheme from the request line when a client sends an absolute-form request-target (for example 'GET https://host/path HTTP/1.1'), so an unauthenticated remote attacker can make an unencrypted HTTP connection appear to the application as HTTPS, or an encrypted connection appear as plaintext. Applications that branch on Request.scheme for security decisions - setting the Secure flag on cookies, forcing HTTPS redirects, or gating trust decisions - can therefore be induced to make the wrong call, yielding low confidentiality and integrity impact (our independent CVSS 3.1 assessment: AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:L/A:N). Exploitability is materially narrowed by an attack requirement (CVSS 4.0 AT:P): the target application must actually consume Request.scheme for a security decision, and no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis; the issue is fixed in aiohttp 3.14.4.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: aiohttp 3.14.4. Upgrade the aiohttp dependency to 3.14.4 or later (release: https://github.com/aio-libs/aiohttp/releases/tag/v3.14.4; fix commit: https://github.com/aio-libs/aiohttp/commit/6d4e7b01f9b951aa084a75d7356e907d4ee80411; advisory: https://github.com/aio-libs/aiohttp/security/advisories/GHSA-f9xw-jh8m-3mwq) and regenerate lockfiles so transitive consumers on Python asyncio stacks pick up the fixed parser. If an immediate upgrade is not possible, the effective compensating control is to stop treating Request.scheme as a security primitive: derive connection security from the underlying transport (request.transport / protocol.ssl_context) or from a trustworthy statement from a trusted reverse proxy, accepting that this requires code changes and careful review of every call site. Alternatively, terminate TLS and enforce HTTPS policy at the reverse proxy or load balancer - rejecting absolute-form request-targets and normalizing the request line before it reaches aiohttp - with the trade-off that such filtering may break legitimate clients and proxy-style deployments, and the trade-off that the application code remains fragile until upgraded. Do not rely on input validation inside the application to distinguish scheme forgery, since the same request line is what aiohttp parses; patch to 3.14.4 remains the only complete fix.

Technical ContextAI · show details
aiohttp is an asynchronous HTTP client/server framework built on asyncio, with its request line and header parsing implemented in a Cython/C accelerated path (aiohttp/_http_parser.pyx wrapping llhttp) plus a pure-Python fallback (aiohttp/http_parser.py). Per RFC 9112 section 3.2.3 and RFC 9110 section 4.2.1-4.2.2, the request-target may take absolute-form ('http://host/path'), authority-form (CONNECT only), asterisk-form (OPTIONS only), or origin-form ('/path'). Absolute-form targets carry their own scheme, and aiohttp previously propagated that peer-supplied scheme into the parsed URL and then into Request.scheme in aiohttp/web_request.py, rather than deriving the scheme from the actual transport (protocol.ssl_context). This is CWE-807, Reliance on Untrusted Inputs in a Security Decision: the framework conflates a client-asserted string in the request line with the cryptographic property of the connection. The upstream fix removes the assignment of url.scheme to the scheme cache, instead computing scheme as 'https' if protocol.ssl_context is set and 'http' otherwise, leaving authority-form (CONNECT) targets without a scheme unless clone(scheme=...) overrides it. The same commit hardens the parser to reject absolute-form targets with empty hosts or out-of-range ports (yarl ValueError surfaced as InvalidURLError / HTTP 400), to accept authority-form only for CONNECT, and to accept asterisk-form only for OPTIONS, preventing bare ValueErrors from escaping the parser.

2DescriptionCVE.org
AIOHTTP is an asynchronous HTTP client/server framework for asyncio and Python. Prior to 3.14.4, an attacker can send an absolute-form request that causes Request.scheme to use attacker-controlled request-target scheme data instead of the connection protocol. Applications that use Request.scheme for security decisions can consequently be tricked into treating an unencrypted connection as encrypted or an encrypted connection as unencrypted. This issue is fixed in version 3.14.4.
