MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Impact The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires that a program using tinytag versions 2.0.0 through 2.2.x be induced to read an attacker-supplied M4A/MP4 file; the malicious file must contain a '----' custom-field (iTunes freeform) atom enclosing a sub-atom whose declared size is zero, which halts forward progress in the custom-field atom traversal. The primary limiting factor is the UI:R user-interaction requirement - the victim application must actually open and parse the crafted file (e.g., via an upload, library scan, or file-open action); there is no authentication requirement (PR:N) and the default metadata-reading path is affected, so no non-default configuration is needed. Impact is limited to denial of service (process hang) with no data exposure or modification. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but limited-severity availability issue. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H, base 6.5) indicates a network-reachable, low-complexity, unauthenticated flaw affecting ONLY availability (CWE-835 infinite loop) - there is no confidentiality or integrity impact, so the realistic worst case is a hung or unresponsive process, not code execution or data compromise. The UI:R requirement is significant: exploitation depends on a victim program being made to read an attacker-crafted M4A file, which lowers real-world risk below what the 6.5 score alone suggests. No EPSS score, SSVC decision, KEV listing, or published POC/exploit-code reference was provided in the input; per the precision rules this is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' The GitHub Security Advisory (GHSA-24cc-9352-h2pg), fixing PR #326, and the 2.3.0 release are all confirmed, and the PR includes malicious trigger samples (empty_custom_field.m4a / mp4_invalid_size_zero.m4a) as regression tests - these are effectively reproduction files but are not weaponized exploit code. Net: a real, confirmed, easily-reproducible DoS worth patching, but not a high-priority emergency given DoS-only impact and the user-interaction prerequisite. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker crafts an M4A file containing a '----' custom-field atom with a zero-size sub-atom and submits it to an application that uses tinytag 2.0.0-2.2.x to read audio metadata (for example, a media-upload or indexing service). When the application parses the file, the atom-traversal loop stops advancing and spins indefinitely, hanging the thread or process and denying service. No public exploit code was identified, though the fixing PR ships proof-of-concept trigger samples as regression tests. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 15, 2026
Denial of service in the tinytag Python metadata-reading library affects versions 2.0.0 through 2.2.x: parsing a crafted M4A/MP4 file that places a zero-length sub-atom inside a '----' (iTunes freeform custom field) atom leaves the atom traversal loop unable to advance, so metadata extraction hangs indefinitely and the reading process must be killed. Exploitation requires user interaction (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H, score 6.5) - a victim application must be induced to open, scan, or upload the malicious file - and impact is confined to availability, with no data disclosure or modification. There is no confirmed active exploitation (CISA KEV) and no public exploit code identified at time of analysis; the flaw is fixed in tinytag 2.3.0.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade to tinytag 2.3.0 (https://github.com/tinytag/tinytag/releases/tag/2.3.0), which incorporates the fix from PR #326 (https://github.com/tinytag/tinytag/pull/326) and commit 9ada221ba44990cb02cd9002d992186e037b515e; see the advisory at https://github.com/tinytag/tinytag/security/advisories/GHSA-24cc-9352-h2pg for confirmation. If immediate upgrade is not possible, do not rely on tinytag to reject malformed boxes - instead isolate parsing from the critical path: run metadata extraction in a separate worker or subprocess with a hard wall-clock timeout and kill-on-expiry (trade-off: added process overhead and the file is dropped rather than parsed), and apply OS-level CPU/memory limits to the parsing process so a hang degrades only that worker. Because the trigger is an unauthenticated, user-supplied file, restrict or rate-limit untrusted M4A/MP4 ingestion, reject oversized or malformed uploads up front, and prefer parsing on a dedicated pool with concurrency caps (trade-off: legitimate large-file scans may be throttled). No other upstream mitigation exists for versions prior to 2.3.0.

Technical ContextAI · show details
tinytag parses MP4/M4A metadata by walking the ISO Base Media File Format (ISO BMFF) 'atom' (box) tree, where each atom begins with a 4-byte big-endian size field followed by a 4-byte type. The '----' atom is the iTunes freeform/custom-field container whose children carry user-defined keys and values, so a parser must descend into it to recover custom tags. The root cause is CWE-835 (Loop with Unreachable Exit Condition / infinite loop): the pre-2.3.0 traversal assumed every declared atom size was positive, subtracted the header length without validating the result, and re-read the next atom header from the same offset when a sub-atom declared size 0. Because the malformed location never moved the file pointer forward, the custom-field traversal re-processed the same zero-size child forever. The upstream fix (PR #326) introduces a _read_atom_header() helper that returns an invalid/None size when the declared size is smaller than the header, and rewrites _traverse_atoms() to thread an explicit curr_pos, so invalid sizes terminate parsing rather than looping. Regression tests were added with samples 'empty_custom_field.m4a' and 'mp4_invalid_size_zero.m4a'. The CPE cpe:2.3:a:tinytag:tinytag:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* covers all releases but the vulnerable window is specifically 2.0.0 up to (excluding) 2.3.0.

Crafted file can arrive remotely and reliably triggers the loop (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N), but a user/app must open it (UI:R); only availability is affected (A:H, C:N/I:N).

Lifecycle Timeline
1DescriptionCVE.org
tinytag is a Python library for reading audio file metadata. From 2.0.0 until 2.3.0, an M4A file containing a sub-atom with a size of zero inside a ---- atom can cause the metadata parser to stop advancing through the input. The custom-field atom traversal repeatedly processes the malformed location, causing an infinite loop and denying service to a program that reads the crafted file. This issue is fixed in version 2.3.0.
