1 technique across 1 tactic: Initial Access The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires the Progress Kendo UI for jQuery FileManager component specifically, and depends on the default drag hint rendering a remotely-supplied item name as HTML while the list items themselves are encoded. The concrete prerequisites are: (1) the attacker must be able to control or influence an item (file/folder) name within the FileManager; and (2) a legitimate user must actively drag that specific item, since the payload only renders in the drag hint - merely viewing the FileManager does not trigger it. These limiting factors - required user drag interaction (UI:R), high attack complexity (AC:H), and the need to seed a crafted item name - meaningfully narrow realistic exploitation and should weigh in defender prioritization despite the network attack vector. |
| Impact | This is a genuinely moderate, not high-priority, issue and the CVSS 4.7 (Medium) score reflects reality well. The signals are consistent rather than conflicting: the CVSS vector (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N) describes a network-reachable but high-complexity, user-interaction-dependent cross-site scripting flaw (CWE-80) with only Low confidentiality and integrity impact and no availability impact. Exploitation requires a very specific victim action - dragging a maliciously named FileManager item - which is why AC:H and UI:R are both set and why real-world exploitability is constrained. No EPSS score, CISA KEV entry, or POC was provided in the input; there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and no evidence of active exploitation, so this should be treated as a routine patch-cycle item rather than an emergency. The scope change (S:C) correctly captures that injected script executes in the user's browser context, distinct from the vulnerable component, which is standard for XSS. Note that PR:N assumes the attacker can seed a malicious item name without authenticating; in many real FileManager deployments the ability to create or name items is itself gated by authentication or upload permissions, which would further reduce real-world risk - verify against the actual deployment. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker arranges for a FileManager item to carry a name containing HTML with an event handler (for example by uploading or creating a file where naming is attacker-influenced). When a legitimate user browses that FileManager and drags the affected item, the unencoded name is rendered in the default drag hint and the embedded JavaScript executes in the user's browser session. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis, and the high attack complexity plus required drag interaction make opportunistic mass exploitation unlikely. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 15, 2026
Cross-site scripting in the FileManager component of Progress Kendo UI for jQuery (versions 2023.3.1010 through 2026.3.1015) allows an attacker who can control or influence a file or folder name to inject HTML with event handlers that execute JavaScript in a victim's browser when the user drags that item, because the default drag hint renders the remote item name as raw HTML while the corresponding list items are correctly encoded. The vector is unauthenticated over the network (PR:N) but requires a user to actively drag the poisoned item and demands the attacker first seed a crafted name, so the CVSS 4.7 (Medium) score reflects a genuinely moderate priority - no public exploit code exists and there is no evidence of active exploitation. The issue is a client-side DOM XSS with scoped confidentiality and integrity impact (S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N) and is fixed in version 2026.3.1015.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: 2026.3.1015 - upgrade Kendo UI for jQuery to this version or later, following the guidance in the advisory at https://www.telerik.com/kendo-jquery-ui/documentation/knowledge-base/kb-security-filemanager-drag-hint-xss-cve-2026-106162. Where an immediate upgrade is not possible, the most effective compensating control is to prevent attacker-controlled strings from reaching the FileManager at all: validate and sanitize file and folder names on the server before they are exposed to the widget (strip angle brackets and event-handler attributes, or restrict names to a safe character allowlist), which neutralizes the payload regardless of the client-side rendering bug; the trade-off is that legitimate filenames containing unusual characters may be rejected or altered. Alternatively, restrict who can create or rename items surfaced in FileManager (read-only FileManager configurations or approval-gated uploads), which shrinks the attack surface but is only viable where untrusted users are not expected to manage files. Because the payload only renders during a drag operation, no server-side block of the request alone removes the risk, and a strictly enforced Content Security Policy that disallows inline script and inline event handlers provides defense in depth at the cost of potentially breaking other inline-script-dependent features in the embedding application.

Technical ContextAI · show details
This is a cross-site scripting flaw (CWE-80, improper neutralization of script-related HTML tags) in a commercial JavaScript UI widget library, Progress Kendo UI for jQuery. The FileManager widget normally HTML-encodes item names when rendering its list view, but its drag-hint (the ghost element shown while dragging) builds its markup from the same remotely supplied item name without applying that encoding. Because the drag hint is injected into the live DOM, an item name containing tags with event handlers (for example an element carrying onmouseover or onerror) is parsed as HTML and its script executes in the origin of the hosting application when the drag interaction renders the hint. The CPE cpe:2.3:a:progress_software:kendo_ui_for_jquery:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* confirms the affected package is the jQuery edition of Kendo UI distributed by Progress Software (Telerik), and the success factor S:C in the assessed vector reflects that the injected script runs in the context of the application embedding the widget rather than in Kendo itself. Exploitation path is therefore: attacker plants a crafted item name (via an upload, rename, or integration that surfaces attacker-controlled filenames to the FileManager) → victim drags that item → hint markup is parsed → script executes with the victim's session privileges to that application.

1DescriptionCVE.org
In Progress® Kendo® UI for jQuery versions starting with 2023.3.1010 and prior to 2026.3.1015, the FileManager component renders remotely supplied item names as HTML in its default drag hint even though the corresponding list items are encoded. An attacker who can control an item name can inject HTML containing event handlers that execute JavaScript in a user's browser when the user drags the affected item. Successful exploitation can compromise the confidentiality and integrity of data accessible to the affected application. This issue is fixed in version 2026.3.1015.
