Exploitation Conditions

The /api/file/snippet.php endpoint lacks the standard authenticated-session guard, so unauthenticated requests reach ACL evaluation rather than receiving an immediate 401. Actual file-content disclosure requires an ADDITIONAL non-default condition: an unusual reverse-proxy header configuration OR an ACL misconfiguration that lets the request proceed into path and file-content handling. Limiting factors: on default, correctly-configured FileRise installations the ACL checks block unauthenticated reads, so no arbitrary file read occurs; only short text preview content is exposed (C:L); affects FileRise versions prior to 3.20.0.

Impact

All signals converge on LOW real-world risk. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N, base 3.7) shows a network-reachable, unauthenticated endpoint but with high attack complexity and only limited confidentiality impact (C:L) and no integrity or availability impact. There is no CISA KEV listing and no public exploit identified, so this is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' No EPSS value was supplied in the input, so exploitation-probability cannot be quantified. The CVSS PR:N (unauthenticated) is technically accurate for reaching the endpoint, but the description is explicit that this does NOT yield an unauthenticated arbitrary file read on normal installations - FileRise's ACL checks still run, so the practical effect is only that unauthenticated requests reach ACL evaluation instead of an immediate 401. Actual file-content disclosure is documented ONLY under additional unusual proxy-header or ACL misconfiguration, which is exactly why AC:H is justified. There is no SSVC decision data in the input. Net: this is a defense-in-depth hardening fix (missing authenticated-session guard), not a high-priority exploitable information-disclosure flaw; the low CVSS and absence of KEV/POC are mutually consistent rather than conflicting.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

On a FileRise instance deployed behind a reverse proxy with unusual proxy-header handling or a mis-set ACL, an unauthenticated attacker sends a crafted request to /api/file/snippet.php, which - lacking the authenticated-session guard - proceeds past ACL evaluation into path and file-content handling and returns a short text preview of a file. On a default, correctly-configured installation the ACL check blocks this, so no file content is returned. No public proof-of-concept exploit has been identified.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 14, 2026

FileRise deployments prior to 3.20.0 expose the /api/file/snippet.php short-text preview endpoint without the standard authenticated-session guard, allowing unauthenticated network requests to reach ACL evaluation rather than receiving an immediate 401. On default, correctly configured installations the ACL checks still block access, so arbitrary file read is not possible; actual short preview content disclosure requires an additional non-default reverse-proxy header configuration or ACL misconfiguration, making the assessed real-world risk LOW (CVSS 3.7). No public exploit identified at time of analysis.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: 3.20.0. Upgrade FileRise to version 3.20.0 or later to require authentication before snippet preview ACL, path, or file-content handling; see the release notes at https://github.com/error311/FileRise/releases/tag/v3.20.0 and advisory GHSA-p4c7-8jm2-m88q at https://github.com/error311/FileRise/security/advisories/GHSA-p4c7-8jm2-m88q, with the fixing commit at https://github.com/error311/FileRise/commit/8c0875bf8f7fd5c6769f4159b999bf08a9d4f0c9. If immediate upgrade is not possible, enforce authentication at a reverse proxy for /api/file/snippet.php while reviewing proxy header forwarding so unusual proxy headers cannot influence ACL decisions, and audit FileRise ACL settings for misconfigurations that would let unauthenticated requests reach path or file-content handling; these compensating controls may disrupt legitimate short-text previews and do not replace the patch. If preview functionality is not required, blocking /api/file/snippet.php at the web server or reverse proxy removes the exposure at the cost of disabling snippet previews.

Technical ContextAI · show details

FileRise is a PHP-based self-hosted web file manager, represented by CPE cpe:2.3:a:error311:filerise:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*, and the affected component is the /api/file/snippet.php preview handler. The root cause maps to CWE-200 (Information Exposure): the endpoint lacks the standard authenticated-session guard before ACL, path, and file-content processing, so unauthenticated requests are evaluated by ACL logic instead of being rejected immediately with 401. The CVSS 3.1 vector AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N reflects remote, unauthenticated reachability but high attack complexity and only low confidentiality impact, because default ACL checks still block real file-content access; exploitation depends on a second, non-default condition such as unusual proxy-header handling or an ACL misconfiguration that lets the request proceed. The vendor commit 8c0875bf8f7fd5c6769f4159b999bf08a9d4f0c9 and release v3.20.0 add the missing authentication requirement for snippet preview handling.

DescriptionCVE.org

FileRise is a self-hosted web-based file manager with multi-file upload, editing, and batch operations. Prior to 3.20.0, FileRise /api/file/snippet.php does not apply the standard authenticated-session guard before processing short text preview requests. The endpoint still performs FileRise ACL checks, so normal installations do not expose an unauthenticated arbitrary file read, but unauthenticated requests can reach ACL evaluation instead of receiving an immediate 401 response. Only additional unusual proxy-header or ACL misconfiguration is documented as allowing requests to proceed into path and file-content handling. This issue is fixed in version 3.20.0.
