Exploitation Conditions

Requires a local attacker to supply a crafted DOS (MBR) extended-partition disk image or removable medium and have the host probe it with libblkid - e.g. automatic inspection on USB insertion via udev/udisks, or a tool/VM/forensic pipeline that scans attacker-provided images. The EBR entries must be constructed so the 32-bit cur_start + start addition wraps to sector zero. LIMITING FACTORS: not remotely exploitable (AV:L); the attacker needs physical or filesystem-level delivery of the malicious medium plus a probing path; and real disk-modification or availability impact is NOT direct - it requires a separate downstream consumer to trust and act on the falsified partition metadata. Only util-linux versions before 2.41.4 are affected; 2.41.4 adds 64-bit arithmetic and extended-area bounds checks.

Impact

Signals are internally consistent but modest in real-world terms. The official CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N, base 8.0) correctly reflects a LOCAL attack vector - the description confirms exploitation requires a crafted DOS extended-partition disk image or removable medium to be probed on the target host, so this is not remotely exploitable despite PR:N. The high 8.0 score is driven almost entirely by the I:H/A:H impact metrics, yet the description itself explicitly scopes the DIRECT impact to integrity of reported partition metadata and states that 'disk modification or availability loss requires a separate downstream consumer to act on that metadata.' This is a meaningful conflict: the base score counts conditional downstream consequences as if they were direct, inflating perceived severity. No EPSS score, CISA KEV listing, POC, or SSVC decision data was provided in the input, so exploitation probability and automatability cannot be quantified. There is no public exploit identified at time of analysis - the GitHub links are the vendor fix commits and advisory, not weaponized exploit code. Net: this is a genuine integrity defect in a ubiquitous library and worth patching, but in isolation it is a high-CVSS / lower-real-risk issue - it requires local attacker-controlled media plus a downstream consumer that acts on the false metadata to cause actual disk or availability harm, rather than being an internet-facing or self-propagating threat.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

A local attacker crafts a DOS extended-partition disk image or USB/removable medium with EBR entries engineered so the 32-bit addition cur_start + start wraps to sector zero, then gets it probed - e.g. via auto-inspection on USB insertion (udev/udisks) or a VM/forensic tool scanning an uploaded image. libblkid then reports a false partition overlapping the MBR; if a downstream tool trusts that metadata and writes to it, disk corruption or data loss can follow. No public exploit code is identified at time of analysis.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 14, 2026

A crafted DOS (MBR) extended-partition image can trigger a 32-bit integer overflow in util-linux's libblkid partition parser before version 2.41.4, causing the library to report a bogus partition that overlaps the master boot record. An unprivileged local attacker only needs to get a malicious disk image or removable medium in front of a probing path - such as automatic udev/udisks inspection of an inserted USB device, or any tool, VM, or forensic pipeline that scans attacker-supplied images - and no public exploit code or confirmed active exploitation has been identified at time of analysis. The realistic impact is limited: libblkid's reported partition metadata is falsified (an integrity issue), while actual disk modification or availability loss would require a separate downstream consumer to trust and act on that incorrect metadata, so the practical risk is modest despite a higher CVSS base score in some feeds.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to util-linux 2.41.4, which is the vendor-released fix and contains the 64-bit arithmetic plus extended-area bounds and monotonic-advance checks; the underlying changes are the upstream commits 05c2dbadf34cc74192287f377904afaaf4061623, a2d858176b609ab5b8535021a3af9cd302d23d31, and e9d544d013267ea86b70ee8ff78abd280e6641af (see also the release page https://github.com/util-linux/util-linux/releases/tag/v2.41.4 and advisory https://github.com/util-linux/util-linux/security/advisories/GHSA-h4rw-gv36-wmp5). Where an immediate package upgrade is not possible, reduce exposure by preventing automatic probing of untrusted media - for example tighten udev/udisks rules or disable automatic mounting of unknown removable devices, and avoid running blkid, lsblk, or forensic imaging pipelines as privileged over attacker-supplied disk images (parse them inside an unprivileged sandbox or a throwaway VM instead). The trade-off of these workarounds is loss of convenience: automatic device detection and hot-plug usability are degraded, and manual inspection steps must be added to workflows, so treat them as temporary measures until patched packages are deployed. Note that the direct effect is falsified partition metadata only; a compensating control on downstream consumers that validate partition tables against the MBR before acting on them also limits secondary disk-modification fallout.

Technical ContextAI · show details

libblkid is the device-identification library used by util-linux tools such as blkid, lsblk, and mount helpers, and by desktop stacks (udev, udisks) to enumerate partitions on block devices. In libblkid/src/partitions/dos.c, parse_dos_extended() walks Extended Boot Records (EBRs) that chain extended DOS partitions; the absolute start of a data partition was computed as cur_start + start using 32-bit arithmetic, and the extended-area bounds checks were not applied to the first two EBR entries. A disk image whose EBR fields are chosen so that cur_start + start wraps around to sector zero can therefore make the loop believe a data partition starts at the beginning of the disk, producing a false partition that overlaps the MBR. This is a CWE-190 (integer overflow/wraparound) defect in the partition-probing logic, not a memory-corruption issue, so the primary consequence is corrupted partition metadata returned to callers. The upstream fix introduces uint64_t arithmetic, computes an explicit extended-area end (ex_end = ex_start + ex_size), validates each data partition against ex_start/ex_end, and adds a monotonic-advance check so a non-advancing EBR link is abandoned instead of looping or wrapping.

DescriptionCVE.org

util-linux is a random collection of Linux utilities. Before util-linux 2.41.4, parse_dos_extended() in libblkid/src/partitions/dos.c computes an extended-partition start sector with 32-bit addition and does not apply the extended-area bounds checks to the first two EBR entries. A local attacker who causes a crafted DOS extended-partition disk image or removable medium to be probed can wrap cur_start + start to sector zero and cause libblkid to report a false partition overlapping the MBR. This directly compromises the integrity of the reported partition metadata; disk modification or availability loss requires a separate downstream consumer to act on that metadata. This issue is fixed in 2.41.4.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

A parsing flaw in util-linux's libblkid disk-partition component (versions prior to 2.41.4) lets a crafted disk image be misread by the operating system as containing a partition that overlaps the master boot record. The exposure is broad because libblkid sits inside routine device-inspection paths used across Linux servers, workstations, virtual machines, backup systems and forensic pipelines, so any employee inserting an untrusted USB device or any team processing third-party disk images can reach the flaw. The practical consequence today is falsified partition metadata rather than confirmed disk damage, but with no vendor patch currently identified, leadership should treat this as a fleet-wide dependency hygiene issue requiring interim handling rather than an active intruder threat.

Business Impact: Medium
Compensating Controls

No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis; interim mitigations are to disable udev/udisks automatic probing and auto-mounting of untrusted removable media, require that attacker-supplied or third-party disk images be opened only in an isolated container or VM without host block-device access, use low-level superblock probing (blkid -p / --probe) to bypass partition-table parsing in tooling and forensic pipelines, restrict physical and logical access to removable-media insertion points on sensitive systems, and monitor for unexpected disk/partition metadata changes until util-linux can be updated to 2.41.4 or later once vendor packages are available.
