| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires the victim to list or extract a crafted SquashFS v4 archive using a vulnerable 7-Zip build (before 26.03); specifically the archive's superblock no_ids field must be set so the final metadata block's expected size is miscomputed and bypasses the size validation check in SquashfsHandler.cpp. Limiting factors: the attack vector is local (the user must process an attacker-supplied file), mandatory user interaction is required (UI:P - opening/listing/extracting the archive), and the impact is confined to disclosure of uninitialized heap memory surfaced through the kpidUserId and kpidGroupId properties - there is no code execution, integrity, or availability impact. No authentication is required (PR:N), and default configurations are affected because SquashFS handling is built into standard archive processing. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but moderate-priority issue, not a top-tier emergency. The CVSS 4.0 base score of 6.8 (Medium) reflects local attack vector (AV:L), low complexity (AC:L), no privileges required (PR:N), but mandatory passive user interaction (UI:P) and a confidentiality-only impact (VC:H, VI:N, VA:N) consistent with CWE-908 uninitialized memory disclosure. No EPSS score, SSVC decision, or KEV status was provided in the input, and there is no indication of a public POC - so exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' The flaw was reported by VulnCheck (a credible vulnerability-intelligence vendor) and a vendor patch (7-Zip 26.03) is available, which raises defensive priority for an application this widely installed. The key tempering factors are that the attack is not remote/automatable - a user must actively list or extract an attacker-supplied archive - and the impact is limited to leaking heap memory contents (potentially sensitive process data) rather than code execution or integrity loss. Net: patch-worthy given 7-Zip's huge install base and the trivial crafting of a malicious archive, but the local vector plus required user interaction keep real-world risk below that of a remotely exploitable RCE. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker crafts a malicious SquashFS v4 archive whose superblock no_ids field forces the final metadata block's expected size to be miscomputed, bypassing the size validation check in SquashfsHandler.cpp. The attacker delivers this archive via email, a download link, or a shared file, and when the victim merely lists or extracts it in a vulnerable 7-Zip build, the application returns uninitialized heap memory in the kpidUserId and kpidGroupId properties, exposing potentially sensitive process memory to the attacker. No public exploit code was identified in the provided data, though the described trigger is straightforward to reproduce. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 14, 2026
Uninitialized heap memory disclosure in 7-Zip's SquashFS v4 archive handler (SquashfsHandler.cpp) allows an attacker to leak process memory contents by supplying a crafted archive that a victim then lists or extracts. The flaw is triggered in any 7-Zip build before 26.03 when the SquashFS superblock's no_ids field is manipulated so the final metadata block's expected size is miscomputed and slips past the handler's size validation check, causing uninitialized heap bytes to be surfaced as the kpidUserId and kpidGroupId properties. Exploitation requires local processing of an attacker-supplied file plus mandatory user interaction (opening, listing, or extracting the archive), no authentication is required, and the impact is limited to information disclosure with no code execution, integrity, or availability effect; no public exploit identified at time of analysis, and the issue rates as moderate rather than emergency priority.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade to 7-Zip 26.03 or later, which corrects the metadata block size validation in SquashfsHandler.cpp; installations should pull the build from https://7-zip.org/ and confirm the applied version, and the maintainer/patch discussion is at https://sourceforge.net/p/sevenzip/discussion/45797/thread/db6922e1d0/ with the researcher advisory at https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/7-zip-squashfs-uninitialized-memory-disclosure-via-uid-gid-table. Until patching completes, compensating controls are needed because the trigger is simply opening a file: block or sandbox inspection of untrusted .squashfs/.sqfs images by pre-26.03 7-Zip (for example by preventing email gateways, download scanners, and CI artifact indexers from auto-extracting SquashFS content) - the trade-off is reduced automation and manual handling of legitimate images; run 7-Zip listing/extraction of untrusted archives under a low-privilege account or container so leaked heap bytes are attributable only to a confined process - the trade-off is setup overhead and possible path/permission friction; and avoid relying on UID/GID ownership properties reported by pre-26.03 7-Zip for SquashFS archives in any automated decision-making, since those values may be garbage - the trade-off is manual verification of ownership metadata. Because exploitation is local and requires user interaction, user awareness around opening unsolicited archives provides additional risk reduction but is not a substitute for upgrading.

Technical ContextAI · show details
SquashFS is a compressed read-only filesystem commonly packaged as a .squashfs/.sqfs archive, and 7-Zip ships a built-in SquashFS v4 reader implemented in SquashfsHandler.cpp that parses the superblock, then walks inode and metadata blocks to expose file attributes as archive properties. The superblock's no_ids field declares how many user/group ID entries follow, and that count feeds into the expected size computation for the final metadata block; by setting no_ids so the computed expected size underflows or otherwise mismatches, an attacker causes the read to proceed past the handler's size validation check, leaving the buffers backing kpidUserId and kpidGroupId uninitialized. The result is a CWE-908 (Use of Uninitialized Resource) condition: heap memory that was never written is reinterpreted as UID/GID values and returned to the caller. The CPE cpe:2.3:a:7-zip:7-zip:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* reflects that every 7-Zip release before 26.03 carries the vulnerable handler. Per the assessed vector (CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N), the attack requires local delivery of the malicious archive and user interaction, is unauthenticated, and yields only confidentiality impact, which is why the more granular CVSS v4 vector (AV:L/UI:P/VC:H/E:X) and the 6.8 base score still land in moderate territory.

DescriptionCVE.org
7-Zip before 26.03 contains an uninitialized memory disclosure vulnerability in the SquashFS v4 archive handler (SquashfsHandler.cpp) that allows attackers to leak heap memory by crafting a malicious archive where the superblock’s no_ids field is set so that the final metadata block’s expected size is miscomputed and bypasses the size validation check. By listing or extracting the crafted archive, attackers can cause the application to return uninitialized heap memory as the kpidUserId and kpidGroupId properties, exposing potentially sensitive process memory contents to the user.
