Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires an authenticated WordPress account at subscriber level or higher (PR:L) on a site running the Tainacan plugin before version 1.4.0; the specific prerequisite is access to the plugin's reports REST endpoints, which lack a management-capability authorization check. The limiting factors are: (1) the attacker must already hold or be able to self-register a subscriber account - so sites that disable open registration significantly reduce exposure; and (2) the disclosed data is limited to repository staff email addresses, providing reconnaissance/phishing value rather than direct system compromise. No special non-default configuration is required beyond having the vulnerable plugin version installed and active.

Impact

This is a genuine but low-severity information-disclosure flaw, not a high-priority emergency. The CVSS 3.1 base score is 4.3 (Medium) with vector AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N - network-reachable and low-complexity, but requiring authentication (PR:L) and yielding only limited confidentiality impact (C:L) with no integrity or availability effect. The EPSS score of 0.17% (6th percentile) indicates very low probability of exploitation in the wild, and the CVE is NOT listed in CISA KEV, so there is no evidence of active exploitation. Publicly available exploit code exists (via WPScan), which modestly raises opportunistic risk, but POC availability is distinct from active exploitation and the signals are consistent rather than conflicting: a low-impact, auth-gated info leak with low EPSS and no KEV listing. The practical risk is bounded - an attacker must first obtain a valid subscriber account on the target site, and the payoff is only staff email addresses (useful for phishing/reconnaissance, not direct compromise). Overall: a real issue worth patching on a normal cadence, but not a drop-everything priority.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker registers or acquires a low-privileged subscriber account on a WordPress site running Tainacan prior to 1.4.0, then sends an authenticated request to the plugin's reports REST endpoint, which fails to enforce a management capability check. The response discloses the email addresses of the repository's staff, which the attacker harvests for targeted phishing or social-engineering. A public proof-of-concept exists via WPScan; the low attack complexity (AC:L) means no special timing or conditions are needed once a subscriber token is held.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 15, 2026

Information disclosure in the Tainacan WordPress plugin before 1.4.0 lets any authenticated subscriber-level user read the email addresses of the repository's staff by calling reports REST endpoints that lack a management-capability check; the CVSS vector (PR:L) confirms authentication is required, so the attacker needs an existing or self-registered low-privileged WordPress account. Publicly available exploit code exists (referenced from the WPScan advisory), but there is no confirmed active exploitation and EPSS is only 0.17% (6th percentile), placing this at low practical risk. Impact is limited to confidentiality (C:L, CVSS 4.3) and serves reconnaissance or phishing preparation rather than direct system compromise.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: Tainacan 1.4.0 - upgrade the plugin to version 1.4.0 or later, which adds the missing management-capability check on the reports REST endpoints; this is the only complete fix and should be applied through the WordPress admin plugin updater or by deploying the 1.4.0 package. Where an immediate upgrade is not possible, apply compensating controls with an understanding of their trade-offs: disable open user registration (or restrict it to vetted email domains) so an attacker cannot self-register the subscriber account required by the PR:L precondition - this reduces exposure on sites with public sign-up but blocks legitimate community registrations; audit and remove dormant subscriber accounts and reset credentials for any accounts that should not exist, since already-provisioned accounts retain the ability to query the endpoint; block or restrict requests to the plugin's reports REST routes at the reverse proxy, WAF, or via a short mu-plugin that removes those routes for non-privileged users - this can break legitimate reporting functionality for editors and administrators and must be tested, and route-level filtering can be bypassed by REST path variations; and treat repository staff email addresses as potentially disclosed, applying anti-phishing awareness and monitoring rather than assuming remediation is complete. Note there is publicly available exploit code (WPScan advisory) but no confirmed active exploitation, so patching can be scheduled on a normal cadence rather than treated as an emergency; verify the deployed version after upgrading and confirm the reports endpoints now reject subscriber-level sessions. Technical ContextAI · show details

Tainacan is a WordPress plugin that adds a digital repository/collection-management layer on top of the WordPress REST API. The plugin registers custom REST routes for its "reports" functionality but fails to attach an adequate permission callback, so the routes are reachable by any authenticated user with at least the subscriber role rather than only users holding the plugin's management capability. This is a classic CWE-200 (Exposure of Sensitive Information to an Unauthorized Actor) root cause: a missing authorization check (capability verification such as current_user_can on a management capability) in the REST endpoint's permission callback, effectively a broken access control / authorization gap layered on an information-exposure outcome. Because the WordPress REST API authenticates via cookie or application password and maps the request to the current user's role, a subscriber session is sufficient to invoke the endpoint and harvest staff email addresses. Vulnerability data lists the affected package as CPE cpe:2.3:a:unknown:tainacan:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* with the EUVD version range "Tainacan 0 <1.4.0", i.e. every release prior to 1.4.0, and no non-default configuration is required beyond the plugin being installed, active, and reachable over HTTP(S). The vulnerable behavior is a server-side authorization omission requiring no user interaction (UI:N) and no special network position (AV:N).
