Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires that the target account's password was generated by Txt::defaultPassword() using PHP uniqid() seeded on microsecond server time - i.e., default/temporary password flows such as new-account creation or administrative password resets in Agora Project before 26.10.0. The attacker must observe or approximate the account creation timestamp closely enough to narrow the uniqid() search space, and must authenticate before the legitimate user first logs in and changes the password. Limiting factors per the CVSS vector (PR:N/UI:N but AC:H): no authentication or victim interaction is needed, but the timing-reconstruction and login race materially raise attack complexity; accounts created with user-chosen passwords rather than the generated default are not affected.

Impact

The input provides a CVSS 4.0 base score of 9.1 (AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/VC:H/VI:H/VA:N), indicating a network-reachable, unauthenticated flaw with high confidentiality and integrity impact but HIGH attack complexity. The AC:H rating is the key moderating signal: successful exploitation depends on the attacker observing or approximating the microsecond-resolution server time at account creation to reconstruct the uniqid()-derived password, and winning a race against the legitimate user's first login. No EPSS score was provided, and the CVE is NOT listed in CISA KEV; no POC/exploit-code flag was supplied, so exploitation is not confirmed. The SSVC framework data (exploitation status, automatable, technical impact) is not present in the input. Net assessment: this is a genuine account-takeover primitive worth patching, but the combination of HIGH attack complexity, the timing/race prerequisite, and the product's narrow deployment footprint makes it a targeted-exploitation risk rather than a mass-exploited emergency. The 9.1 headline score overstates practical urgency relative to the AC:H and real-world prevalence signals.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker triggers or observes creation of a new account (or a default/temporary password reset) in Agora Project and records the approximate account-creation time. Because Txt::defaultPassword() derives the password from PHP's uniqid() seeded by server time in microseconds, the attacker computes the likely password within the narrow time window and authenticates as the victim before the legitimate user ever logs in. No public exploit identified at time of analysis, but the predictable-randomness logic is straightforward to reproduce.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 13, 2026

Account takeover in Omnispace Agora Project before 26.10.0 is enabled by predictable default and temporary account passwords: Txt::defaultPassword() derives those passwords from PHP's uniqid(), which is seeded on microsecond server time rather than a cryptographically secure random source. An attacker who can observe or closely approximate the moment an account was created can reconstruct the uniqid() value, compute the generated password, and authenticate as that user before the legitimate owner first logs in and changes it. The assessed vector (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N, C:H/I:H/A:N) describes a network-reachable, unauthenticated attack that severely compromises confidentiality and integrity but carries high attack complexity because the timing reconstruction and the pre-first-login race must both succeed; no public exploit code identified at time of analysis, and the input contains no CISA KEV listing, so active exploitation is not confirmed.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: 26.10.0 - upgrade all Agora Project instances before 26.10.0 to the 26.10 release, available from https://github.com/xech/agora-project/releases/tag/26.10, which is referenced alongside the VulnCheck advisory at https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/omnispace-agora-project-predictable-default-password-via-uniqid as the authoritative fix source. Where immediate upgrade is not possible, stop relying on Txt::defaultPassword() output: force all newly created and administratively reset accounts to set a user-chosen password on first login and invalidate any outstanding generated temporary passwords, recognizing that the exposed credentials remain guessable for accounts whose creation timestamp has already leaked into logs, emails, or ticket systems. Additional compensating controls, each with trade-offs: require provisioning-time password entry by the administrator so no machine-generated secret is transmitted (adds manual overhead and can leak through insecure channels such as plaintext email); restrict the account-creation and password-reset endpoints to trusted administrative networks (blocks external attacker observation of creation timing but does not stop an insider with log access); delete or secure application and mail logs that record account creation timestamps (reduces the timing signal but degrades auditing); and enable the new two-factor authentication option after upgrading to 26.10.0 (a recovered password alone is then insufficient, but users who never enroll remain exposed). Because exploitation is a race against the legitimate user's first login, monitor authentication logs for successful logins to accounts before their expected first use and force a password reset on any account showing that pattern.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The root cause is CWE-330 (Use of Insufficiently Random Values). PHP's uniqid() is a time-based identifier generator, not a cryptographic random number generator: without the more_entropy flag it produces a hexadecimal string built from gettimeofday()-style microsecond resolution, making output values monotonically ordered and predictable given a sufficiently precise estimate of the generation instant. Agora Project's Txt::defaultPassword() wraps this function to mint the default/temporary password assigned to newly created accounts and to accounts whose password is administratively reset, so the credential space collapses to a narrow window of candidate timestamps rather than a secret key space. Because the affected product is a PHP web application deployed as Agora Project (vendor site agora-project.net; codebase published at github.com/xech/agora-project), an attacker with network reach to the login endpoint can enumerate candidate passwords offline and submit them against the account once its creation time is known or bracketed. The attack is only viable against accounts whose credential was machine-generated by this code path; users who set their own passwords, or who already changed the temporary one, are outside the exposure. The 26.10.0 release adds an optional two-factor authentication feature, which reduces the value of a recovered password for accounts enrolled in it, though enrollment cannot protect an account that is compromised before its first legitimate login. The upstream assessment rates this CVSS 4.0 9.1 with AC:H and no PR/UI requirements, consistent with the independent CVSS 3.1 assessment of AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N with high confidentiality and integrity impact and no availability impact.

DescriptionCVE.org

Omnispace Agora Project before 26.10.0 contains an insecure randomness vulnerability that allows attackers to predict temporary or default account passwords generated by Txt::defaultPassword() using PHP's uniqid() function based on server time in microseconds. Attackers who observe or approximate the account creation time can compute the predictable password and take over the account before the legitimate user logs in.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Omnispace Agora Project versions before 26.10.0 contain a critical account takeover vulnerability that allows an unauthenticated network attacker to reconstruct predictable default or temporary passwords and authenticate as newly created users. This could enable unauthorized access to sensitive data and actions, affecting user accounts and organizational trust. The vendor has released patch 26.10.0, and while no public exploit identified at time of analysis and no CISA KEV listing, leadership should prioritize remediation given the critical severity.
