Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires a victim to open or navigate a crafted XAML or XPS document (or content that causes WPF to fetch a remote URI/TrueType font) within a WPF-based .NET desktop application on Windows; the flaw abuses unsafe URI fetching/navigation, propagation of untrusted-input state through hyperlink navigation, TrueType font handling, and cached positive DNS zone-policy decisions. Limiting factors that reduce real-world risk: mandatory user interaction (UI:R - the user must actively open attacker-controlled content), high attack complexity (AC:H - specific conditions in the parsing/navigation path must be met), and platform restriction to Windows WPF applications only (not ASP.NET or cross-platform .NET workloads). Although no authentication is needed (PR:N, unauthenticated), the required victim action and complexity meaningfully constrain exploitation.

Impact

This is a moderate-severity information-disclosure flaw whose real-world priority is low-to-moderate. The signals are internally consistent and point away from urgency: the CVSS 3.1 base score is 5.3 with AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:R, meaning that although the vector is network-reachable and needs no privileges, exploitation requires both high attack complexity and user interaction (opening/navigating a crafted document). CISA SSVC reinforces this - Exploitation: none, Automatable: no, Technical Impact: partial - so there is no evidence of exploitation and the attack cannot be reliably scripted at scale. No EPSS score was supplied, the CVE is NOT in CISA KEV, and no POC is referenced, so exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' The only impact is confidentiality (C:H, I:N, A:N): disclosure of information, not code execution or tampering. There is no conflict between the network vector and the description - the GHSA advisory confirms the mechanism is unsafe URI fetching/navigation in WPF (XAML/XPS), which is genuinely reached over a network but gated behind a user opening untrusted content. Bottom line: a real-but-low-urgency patch-on-schedule item, not an emergency; the combination of AC:H, UI:R, SSVC 'none/no/partial' strongly argues against widespread or automated exploitation.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker crafts a malicious XAML or XPS document (or a document that triggers WPF to fetch a remote URI/font) and delivers it to a victim via email or a web download. When the victim opens or navigates the content in a WPF-based .NET desktop application, flawed origin validation causes the application to fetch or expose data it should not, disclosing sensitive information to the attacker over the network. No public exploit code is identified, and the high attack complexity plus required user interaction make opportunistic exploitation difficult.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 14, 2026

Information disclosure in the Windows Desktop Runtime (WPF) component of .NET allows a remote, unauthenticated attacker to read data from a victim's machine when the victim opens or navigates a crafted XAML or XPS document - or content that causes WPF to fetch a remote URI or TrueType font - inside a WPF-based desktop application on Windows. Per the independent assessment, exploitation is constrained by mandatory user interaction (UI:R) and high attack complexity (AC:H) tied to specific conditions in the XAML/XPS parsing and hyperlink-navigation path, and no public exploit code or confirmed active exploitation has been identified at time of analysis, keeping real-world priority low-to-moderate despite the CVSS 5.3 moderate rating and high confidentiality impact. Affected builds span .NET 8.0, 9.0, 10.0 and 11.0 previews as well as Visual Studio 2022 17.14 and Visual Studio 2026 18.10, which ship the vulnerable runtime.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: .NET 8.0.32, .NET 9.0.21, .NET 10.0.13 and .NET 11.0.0-rc.2, with corresponding Visual Studio fixes at 2022 17.14.42 and 2026 18.10.4; apply the monthly .NET servicing updates referenced in the Microsoft advisory at https://msrc.microsoft.com/update-guide/vulnerability/CVE-2026-96234 and the guidance at https://github.com/dotnet/announcements/issues/482, and rebuild/republish self-contained or framework-dependent WPF applications so they pick up the patched Microsoft.WindowsDesktop.App.Runtime packages (9.0.21, 10.0.13, 8.0.32). Until patch deployment completes, the highest-value compensating control is to stop untrusted XAML/XPS and remote-resource processing from reaching the WPF parser: block or filter network egress from WPF clients so document-driven URI fetches, hyperlink navigation and remote TrueType font loads cannot reach attacker-controlled endpoints - effective against the exfiltration channel but not against the parsing flaw itself and it may break legitimate remote font or embedded-content features. Tighten XAML/XPS handling by imposing strict nesting-depth limits and disallowing external URI resolution in custom XAML readers, at the cost of rejecting some complex, otherwise legitimate documents. Restrict users from opening email/web-delivered XAML or XPS files by hardening attachment handling and file-association policies, which reduces exposure but adds friction for users who legitimately process such documents. Finally, treat WPF desktop clients as low-trust hosts on the network and limit what data their network position can reach, since exploitation requires the victim to actively open crafted content and no public exploit or in-the-wild activity has been identified.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The root cause is CWE-346 (Origin Validation Error) in Microsoft.WindowsDesktop.App.Runtime, the WPF (Windows Presentation Foundation) desktop runtime shipped as NuGet packages Microsoft.WindowsDesktop.App.Runtime.win-x64, .win-x86 and .win-arm64. WPF parses declarative XAML markup and XPS documents and, during parsing, may resolve external URIs, dereference hyperlinks, load TrueType fonts, and consult DNS zone-policy decisions. Because origin validation of that untrusted input is insufficient, attacker-controlled content can cause the runtime to fetch or navigate to resources it should have rejected, leaking data back through the network channel (AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N). Microsoft's fix set is broad and confirms the underlying attack surface: it blocks unsafe URI fetching and navigation, propagates untrusted-input state through hyperlink navigation, adds TrueType font protection and XAML nesting-depth limits, and stops caching positive DNS zone-policy decisions. The flaw is confined to the Windows WPF desktop stack; ASP.NET Core, cross-platform .NET workloads, and non-WPF UI frameworks are not implicated by this advisory.
