V15 - Secure Coding and Architecture Untrusted pointer prevention

| Exploitation Conditions | Requires local, authenticated access (PR:L) to a Windows system and the ability to make the Universal Disk Format File System (UDFS) driver parse an attacker-controlled UDF-formatted volume - e.g. a crafted ISO/optical-disc image, UDF-formatted removable media, or a mountable disk image. There is no remote vector (AV:L) and no user interaction by a separate victim is modeled (UI:N); the attacker themselves must trigger the parse. Exploitation is limited to information disclosure (C:H, I:N, A:N) with no code execution or system modification, and SSVC rates it non-automatable, so it cannot be mass-exploited. The main limiting factors are the local-access and low-privilege prerequisites plus the need to get the UDFS driver to process malicious input. |
| Impact | This is a moderate-severity, low-urgency issue by all available signals, and they are consistent with one another. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N = 5.5) describes a local, low-complexity attack requiring low privileges, with high confidentiality impact but no integrity or availability impact - i.e. pure information disclosure, not code execution. CISA SSVC reinforces low priority: Exploitation=none (no observed or public exploitation), Automatable=no (cannot be reliably mass-exploited), Technical Impact=partial. There is no CISA KEV listing and no public exploit identified, so exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' No EPSS score was provided in the input, so probabilistic exploitation likelihood cannot be quantified. The one notable tension is the 'Buffer Overflow' tag versus the actual weakness: the description and CWE-822 (untrusted pointer dereference) describe an out-of-bounds READ causing information disclosure, not a classic overflow with write/code-execution potential - treat the tag as approximate, not as evidence of RCE. Overall this is a genuine but low-priority defect: local-only access requirement and info-disclosure-only impact place it well below internet-facing or wormable flaws, despite the C:H rating. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A local, low-privileged attacker on a Windows host presents the UDFS driver with a maliciously crafted UDF file-system image (for example a booby-trapped optical disc image, ISO, or removable-media volume) and induces the system to parse it. The out-of-bounds read causes the driver to return adjacent kernel/driver memory contents, leaking potentially sensitive data such as pointers or secrets to the attacker. No public exploit code has been identified at the time of analysis. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 14, 2026
Local information disclosure in the Windows Universal Disk Format File System (UDFS) driver allows an authenticated local attacker to leak memory contents by supplying a crafted UDF-formatted volume - such as a malicious ISO disc image, UDF-formatted removable media, or a mountable disk image - for the driver to parse. Successful exploitation is limited to confidentiality impact (CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N, base 5.5), with no code execution, persistence, or denial of service; CWE-822 points to improper handling of an untrusted pointer/offset during parsing. There is no public exploit identified at time of analysis, CISA's SSVC assessment rates the issue as non-automatable with partial technical impact, and vendor-released patches are available, so this is a moderate-severity, low-urgency issue across supported Windows client and server releases.

Where immediate patching is not possible, the most effective compensating control is to prevent untrusted volumes from reaching the UDFS parser: restrict who can mount disk images and attach removable media (Windows requires administrative rights for Mount-DiskImage, so removing or tightly auditing that privilege on low-privilege accounts blocks the primary local trigger), and, on systems that never need optical or UDF media, disable the UDFS driver (udfs.sys) - accepting the trade-off that UDF-formatted DVDs, Blu-ray discs, and ISO/UDF disk images will no longer be readable until the driver is re-enabled. File-system-level controls are of limited value here because the flaw is in the driver's parsing of the volume itself rather than in permissions on mounted content, and download/mount of untrusted ISO images should be blocked by policy or application control as an interim measure.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The Universal Disk Format (UDF) is the ISO/IEC 13346 file system standard used for optical media such as DVD, Blu-ray, and many ISO images, and Windows implements its support in the kernel-mode UDFS driver (udfs.sys). Because the file system structures are parsed from media that an attacker can fully control, the driver is a classic local privilege/attack surface: volume recognition sequences, descriptor tags, partition maps, file entry (ICB) structures, and allocation descriptors all contain length and offset fields that must be bounds-checked before being dereferenced. This CVE is an out-of-bounds read tracked as CWE-822 (Untrusted Pointer Offset), meaning a pointer or offset value taken from the untrusted on-disk structure is used without adequate validation, causing the driver to read memory outside the intended buffer and return or expose that data - the root-cause class covers insufficient validation of attacker-supplied offsets/lengths when computing read locations. The relevant CVSS vector confirms the scope is unchanged, no integrity or availability impact is modeled, and the attacker must already hold local credentials (PR:L) to trigger the parse; there is no network vector and no separate victim interaction is required because the attacker supplies and mounts the crafted volume themselves.
