MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Impact The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Impact | Typically causes application crash (denial of service). In some cases, may be exploitable for code execution on systems without memory protection. With a CVSS score of 7.5 (HIGH), this represents a significant risk. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker provides input that causes a code path where a pointer is dereferenced without a prior NULL check, crashing the application. |

Suricata is a network IDS, IPS and NSM engine developed by the OISF (Open Information Security Foundation) and the Suricata community. Version 8.0.0's usage of the tls.subjectaltname keyword can lead to a segmentation fault when the decoded subjectaltname contains a NULL byte. This issue is fixed in version 8.0.1. To workaround this issue, disable rules using the tls.subjectaltname keyword.

RemediationAI
A vendor patch is available — apply it immediately. Add NULL checks before pointer dereference operations. Use static analysis to identify potential NULL pointer issues. Enable compiler warnings.

3Executive ViewAI
Organizations using Suricata face notable risk from CVE-2025-59150, a null pointer dereference vulnerability rated CVSS 7.5. Exploitation could compromise the security of affected deployments. Proof-of-concept code is publicly available, increasing the risk of exploitation. A patch is available and should be applied as part of regular vulnerability management.
Apply vendor patch. If immediate patching is not feasible: (1) Implement network-level access controls to limit exposure; (2) Enable enhanced monitoring and alerting; (3) Apply principle of least privilege.

Attack Technique
A null pointer dereference occurs when a program attempts to access memory through a pointer that has been set to NULL (address 0x0).
