MITRE ATT&CK
2 techniques across 2 tactics: Execution, Privilege Escalation The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires an attacker-supplied crafted AC4 file to be parsed by GPAC/MP4Box before version 2.5; the flaw is in the AC4 configuration cleanup (gf_odf_ac4_cfg_clean_list / AC4 parsing in descriptors.c and av_parsers.c). Per the CVSS vector it is local (AV:L) and requires user interaction (UI:R), meaning the victim or an automated workflow must open/process the malicious file - there is no remote, interaction-free path. No special non-default configuration is called out in the sources; the limiting factors are the need to deliver the file and have it parsed, and the impact is confined to availability (crash/DoS), with no code execution, data disclosure, or integrity impact indicated by the evidence. |
| Impact | This is a moderate-severity, low-priority memory-safety bug rather than an urgent threat. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H) scopes the issue to local exploitation requiring user interaction, with impact limited to availability (no confidentiality or integrity loss) - i.e., a crash/DoS of the MP4Box/GPAC process when it parses a malicious file. The signals are consistent and point to low real-world risk: EPSS is 0.18% (7th percentile), the CVE is NOT on CISA KEV (no confirmed active exploitation), and the vuln.today decision label is 'this_month' (routine patching, not act_now/emergency). A public PoC reference exists (sigdevel pocs repo and infosec.exchange post) but it is not verified as working exploit code, so this should not be conflated with active exploitation. The CWE-416 use-after-free is confirmed by the vendor commit, but because impact is A:H only against a file-parsing utility, this is a high-CVSS-for-its-class availability bug, not a priority intrusion vector. Note: the CPE string (cpe:2.3:a:n/a:n/a) and EUVD affected version ('n/a n/a') are placeholder/unpopulated; the actual affected scope is GPAC/MP4Box before 2.5 per the description and the fixing commit. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker crafts a malformed AC4 audio file and gets a victim to open or process it with MP4Box/GPAC (e.g., via an automated media-ingestion pipeline or a user manually inspecting an untrusted file). Parsing the crafted AC4 data triggers a heap use-after-free in the AC4 configuration cleanup path, crashing the application and denying service. A public PoC reference exists but is not verified as working exploit code; exploitation is local and requires the victim to parse the file (UI:R). |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 28, 2026
Heap use-after-free in GPAC/MP4Box AC-4 audio descriptor handling allows a crafted AC4 file to crash the parser, giving denial of service on affected builds before version 2.5. The flaw sits in gf_odf_ac4_cfg_clean_list in src/odf/descriptors.c and in the AC4 raw-frame parsing in src/media_tools/av_parsers.c, where attacker-controlled AC4 fields drive cleanup of substream-group and presentation structures that may already have been freed or double-freed. Per the assessed vector (AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R) the attack is local and needs the victim or an automated pipeline to open or process the malicious file; impact is limited to availability, with no confidentiality or integrity effect, EPSS is low (0.18%, 7th percentile), there is no confirmed active exploitation, and only a public PoC reference exists that is not verified as working exploit code.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to GPAC 2.5 or later, which contains the fixes from commit e02d1fd24cdc26acb1b236ab38b3832cffcae21b (https://github.com/gpac/gpac/commit/e02d1fd24cdc26acb1b236ab38b3832cffcae21b); the commit adds the NULL checks, array-bounds validation for name_len, n_targets, n_add_emdf_substreams, fs_index and frame_rate_index, and the corrected temporary-group teardown that removes the double-free/use-after-free path. If upgrading is not immediately possible, the practical compensating control is to avoid feeding untrusted AC4/MP4 content to MP4Box or GPAC-based tooling that parses AC4 configuration, since the vulnerable code is reached during descriptor and raw-frame parsing; where AC4 handling cannot be avoided, process untrusted files inside an isolated sandbox or container with CPU/memory limits and automatic restart so a crash does not affect production services. Note that these are containment measures only and do not remove the memory-safety bug - the upstream fix is the complete remediation. Advisory details are available at https://github.com/gpac/gpac/issues/3293 and https://seclists.org/oss-sec/2026/q4/324.

Technical ContextAI · show details
AC-4 (Dolby AC-4) is an object-based audio codec whose configuration is carried in ISO BMFF descriptors; GPAC parses these through gf_odf_ac4_cfg_* helpers in src/odf/descriptors.c and through the raw-frame bitstream reader gf_ac4_raw_frame / gf_ac4_parser_bs in src/media_tools/av_parsers.c. The root cause class is CWE-416 (use-after-free): the parser builds temporary lists of GF_AC4SubStreamGroupV1 objects and their substream entries, and the cleanup path (gf_odf_ac4_cfg_clean_list) could free list elements that were still referenced or were later freed again. The referenced upstream fix, commit e02d1fd24cdc26acb1b236ab38b3832cffcae21b, corroborates this: it rewrites the temporary group teardown in gf_ac4_raw_frame to pop and free only groups not copied elsewhere (explicitly commenting 'remove added groups from temp to avoid double frees'), deletes ginfo->substreams before reuse, adds NULL guards around presentation groups and substreams, and adds bounds checks so name_len, n_targets, n_add_emdf_substreams, fs_index and frame_rate_index cannot exceed the corresponding fixed-size arrays and tables. Those missing validations are what let malformed AC4 input reach the faulty free path. The trigger details beyond malformed AC4 parsing are not described in the available sources.

File is parsed locally by the tool (AV:L) and requires the victim to open it (UI:R); no auth needed (PR:N); a use-after-free yields a crash, so availability-only impact (C:N/I:N/A:H).

Use-after-free vulnerabilities occur when a program continues to access memory through a pointer after that memory has been deallocated.
Memory corruption occurs when a program writes data beyond the boundaries of allocated memory regions or accesses memory in unintended ways, violating the integrity of the process's address space.
Denial of Service attacks render applications or systems unavailable by overwhelming resources or triggering failure conditions.
