1 technique across 1 tactic: Impact

The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up.

Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires that MP4Box (the GPAC command-line tool, versions before 2.5) parse an attacker-supplied MP4 file whose elementary stream descriptor lacks a decoderConfig; check_media_profile then dereferences the NULL esd->decoderConfig and the process crashes. The limiting factors are significant: the attack vector is LOCAL (AV:L) and requires user interaction (UI:R) - a user or an automated workflow must actually run MP4Box against the malicious file, so this is not autonomous remote exploitation. Impact is confined to availability (process crash); there is no code execution, data disclosure, or integrity impact indicated by the description, CWE-476, or the vector. Deployments that never process untrusted MP4 files with MP4Box are not realistically exposed.

Impact

This is a medium-severity, local denial-of-service issue and the signals are consistent in pointing to low real-world urgency. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H, base 5.5) describes a local, low-complexity flaw that requires user interaction and only impacts availability - there is no confidentiality or integrity loss, and the only outcome is a crash of the MP4Box process. EPSS is very low at 0.21% (10th percentile), and the vulnerability is NOT in CISA KEV, so there is no evidence of active exploitation; the vuln.today decision label is 'this_month' rather than act_now or emergency, which aligns with routine patching urgency. The input provides a PoC reference (github-poc and infosec.exchange posts) but it is explicitly 'not verified as working exploit code', so a public PoC reference exists but is not confirmed as a functional exploit. No SSVC decision tree (exploitation/automatable/technical-impact) is supplied in the input. Net assessment: a legitimate but low-priority crash bug, not a high-CVSS-but-overrated remote threat - the only impact is process termination when a victim processes a crafted file. Note the apparent tension between PR:N (no privileges) and UI:R (user must process the attacker's file): exploitation is unauthenticated in the sense that no login is needed, but it is not autonomous - it depends on someone feeding a malicious MP4 to MP4Box.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker crafts a malformed MP4 file and delivers it to a victim or an automated pipeline that uses MP4Box to inspect or process media. When MP4Box runs check_media_profile on the file, an elementary stream descriptor with a missing decoderConfig triggers a NULL pointer dereference, crashing the process (segmentation fault). A public PoC reference exists but is not verified as working exploit code.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 26, 2026

A NULL pointer dereference in GPAC's MP4Box command-line tool (versions before 2.5) allows a crafted MP4 file to crash the process, giving a local denial of service. The flaw sits in check_media_profile() in applications/mp4box/mp4box.c, which dereferences esd->decoderConfig after parsing an elementary stream descriptor that carries no decoder configuration; exploitation requires a user or automated workflow to run MP4Box against the malicious file (CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H, 5.5). Impact is availability only - no code execution, disclosure or integrity effect is indicated - the issue is not in CISA KEV, EPSS is low at 0.21% (10th percentile), and a public PoC reference exists but is not verified as working exploit code.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to GPAC 2.5 or later, the release boundary stated in the advisory data, or apply upstream commit 9afeea23f5c6584c02aefe1e1560c2844dfb8f7e, which adds the missing esd->decoderConfig NULL check in check_media_profile() before the descriptor is dereferenced; the patch status is best described as an upstream fix available via commit, with the corresponding released build not independently confirmed here, so verify the fixed version in your distribution or build from a commit at or after 9afeea2. Because the confirmed impact is a process crash reached only when MP4Box parses an attacker-supplied file locally, the practical controls are to avoid running MP4Box on untrusted MP4 input until patched, and to run any automated media-ingestion use of MP4Box inside an isolated, resource-limited container without privileged mounts so that a crash cannot affect other workloads - noting this limits blast radius but does not remove the crash itself, since only the vendor fix addresses the dereference. Track the upstream issue at https://github.com/gpac/gpac/issues/3328 and the VulDB advisory at https://vuldb.com/vuln/424837 for confirmation of the patched release.

Technical ContextAI · show details

MP4Box is the command-line front end of the GPAC toolkit, built on GPAC's ISO media file (ISO/IEC 14496-12) parsing and object descriptor (MPEG-4 OD) infrastructure. During profile inspection, check_media_profile() in applications/mp4box/mp4box.c walks the file's tracks, retrieves each track's elementary stream descriptor (esd) and inspects its decoderConfig field to determine codec characteristics. When a crafted MP4 supplies an elementary stream descriptor without a decoderConfig sub-descriptor, that field is NULL and the unchecked dereference raises SIGSEGV, terminating the process - the NULL pointer dereference class (CWE-476) that the CWE and tag data assign. The upstream commit 9afeea23f5c6584c02aefe1e1560c2844dfb8f7e fixes this by testing esd->decoderConfig before use and, when it is absent, releasing the descriptor with gf_odf_desc_del() and returning early instead of continuing to dereference it. The trigger is file-format driven and requires the crafted media to actually be parsed by MP4Box; the CVSS vector confirms a local attack vector with required user interaction and availability-only impact.
