Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires a user to run GPAC MP4Box in its SAP-dumping code path (the dump_isom_saps routine in mp4box/filedump.c, i.e. sample-access-point dump mode) against an attacker-supplied crafted MP4 file. This is a local action requiring user interaction (UI:R): the attacker cannot trigger it remotely or without the victim invoking the tool on the malicious file. Limiting factors: no authentication is needed once the file is processed (PR:N), but the attacker must get the victim to process the file, impact is confined to crashing the MP4Box process (availability only, no code execution or data disclosure), and the vulnerable path only executes when SAP dumping is requested.

Impact

This is a genuine but low-priority issue. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H, base 5.5 MEDIUM) describes a local, user-interaction-dependent crash with impact limited to availability - no confidentiality or integrity loss and no code execution. The source fix confirms this: the commit adds a NULL guard ('if (!samp) continue;') in dump_isom_saps, so the root cause is a NULL-pointer dereference on an unresolved sample rather than a classic memory-corruption RCE, despite the CWE-119 (buffer errors) classification and the 'Buffer Overflow' tag. Publicly available exploit code exists (github-poc referencing a crash PoC), but there is no CISA KEV listing and no EPSS score was provided in the input, so there is no evidence of active or widespread exploitation; POC availability must not be conflated with in-the-wild use. Net: a real, reproducible DoS in a parsing utility, but the local vector (AV:L) and requirement that a user run MP4Box on an attacker-supplied file (UI:R) cap real-world risk well below what a high CVSS alone would suggest. Note the signals are internally consistent - local vector plus required user interaction matches the file-parsing nature of the flaw - so no vector/description conflict exists to flag.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker crafts a malformed MP4 file and delivers it to a victim (download, email, or as media fed into an automated pipeline). When the victim runs GPAC MP4Box in a SAP-dumping mode over the file, dump_isom_saps dereferences a NULL sample pointer and the process crashes with a segmentation fault. A public proof-of-concept crash file is available, but impact is limited to a one-shot denial of service of the MP4Box process.

Alert me

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 19, 2026

Denial of service in GPAC MP4Box 2.5-DEV (rev1672-gc9a31d0e1-master) occurs when SAP-dump processing of a crafted MP4 file reaches dump_isom_saps and uses a missing sample result, crashing the MP4Box process. The issue is local and requires user interaction because the victim must run MP4Box with SAP dumping enabled against the attacker-supplied file, and impact is limited to availability with no code execution or data disclosure. Publicly available exploit code exists, and the upstream project has a fix commit adding a null check, but no CISA KEV active-exploitation listing was provided.

RemediationAI

Upstream fix available (PR/commit); released patched version not independently confirmed. Rebuild GPAC/MP4Box from a source revision that includes commit e6d01820d7bf3967d931fedb379ee5f209bc133b, specifically the added null check in applications/mp4box/filedump.c, or apply a vendor release that contains that commit, and verify the built binary includes the guard. If upgrading is not possible, do not run MP4Box's SAP dumping mode against untrusted MP4 files; process such files only in a disposable, unprivileged container or sandbox with CPU and memory limits so a crash is contained. Avoid granting the tool unnecessary file or network access, and refer to https://github.com/gpac/gpac/issues/3321 and https://github.com/gpac/gpac/commit/e6d01820d7bf3967d931fedb379ee5f209bc133b for vendor details.

Technical ContextAI · show details

GPAC's MP4Box is a command-line ISO BMFF/MP4 inspection and manipulation tool. The vulnerable path is dump_isom_saps() in applications/mp4box/filedump.c, which enumerates samples for sample-access-point reporting. The upstream diff adds an 'if (!samp) continue;' guard before the sample is used, indicating the crash comes from an unchecked NULL or invalid sample pointer encountered while parsing a malformed or unusual MP4 track; the public mapping is CWE-119, a memory-safety class, while the concrete repair is a defensive null check. Exploitation is confined to the MP4Box process and the SAP-dump code path, so the assessed impact is availability only (A:H) with local access and user interaction (AV:L/UI:R), not remote code execution. No CPE strings were supplied and EUVD affected-version data is 'n/a n/a', so exact affected builds must be inferred from the description and source path.

Attack Technique

A buffer overflow occurs when a program writes more data to a memory buffer than it was allocated to hold, causing the excess data to spill into adjacent memory regions.

Denial of Service attacks render applications or systems unavailable by overwhelming resources or triggering failure conditions.
