Analysis

Technical Context
MPTCP is an extension to TCP that enables a single connection to use multiple network subflows simultaneously for improved bandwidth and redundancy. The vulnerability exists in net/mptcp/protocol.c where the mptcp_worker() function and packet scheduler check subflow socket state (sk->sk_state) before acquiring socket locks. When a subflow socket (ssk) is closed via mptcp_close(), a concurrent retransmission attempt can pass the initial unprotected state check but then attempt to queue data on an already-closed socket, triggering the WARNING in inet_sock_destruct() at net/ipv4/af_inet.c:153. The root cause is insufficient synchronization between the packet scheduler's state validation and actual transmission under socket lock protection. The fix adds socket-lock-protected re-validation of subflow state and includes a missing fallback-to-tcp case check.
Affected Products
Linux kernel versions 5.16.0 through 5.19.x (and potentially earlier versions with MPTCP support). The vulnerability was introduced when MPTCP packet scheduling logic was implemented and resolved in kernel commit 2eae0556bb9d. Affected CPE: cpe:2.3:o:linux:linux_kernel:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* (versions >=5.16 and <5.20 with MPTCP enabled). Systems using distributions with MPTCP-enabled kernels (Ubuntu 22.04 LTS with 5.15+ kernels, Fedora 36+, RHEL 9+) are impacted. Notably, MPTCP must be explicitly enabled (CONFIG_MPTCP=y) and actively used for practical impact.
Remediation
Apply kernel patch from commit 2eae0556bb9d or backported patches to affected kernel versions. Users should: (1) Update to Linux kernel 5.20-rc1 or later, or apply stable backports to 5.19.x and 5.18.x LTS branches; (2) Verify MPTCP is enabled (grep CONFIG_MPTCP /boot/config-*) and disable if not required (CONFIG_MPTCP=n) as a temporary mitigation; (3) Monitor kernel logs for inet_sock_destruct warnings indicating exploitation. The patch specifically adds subflow socket lock protection around state checks in __mptcp_close_ssk() and mptcp_worker() functions and includes fallback-to-tcp state validation. No user-space workarounds available; kernel upgrade is required.
