Vulnerability Assessment

Exploitation Conditions

Requires local access as a low-privileged user to a volume mounted with the legacy in-kernel NTFS driver with write support (not ntfs3), plus a cluster-free operation spanning multiple runmap runs (deleting or truncating a fragmented file). The buggy count only inflates when ntfs_bitmap_clear_run() actually fails for a run - e.g. a second run failing with the same errno as an earlier one, or any failure after a prior non-ENOMEM error - so an error path (memory pressure, I/O/media error) must be hit. Limiting factors: local-only vector, requires writable NTFS mount using the legacy driver, and depends on a bitmap-clear failure that an attacker cannot deterministically control, so normal operation on healthy media does not trigger it.

Impact

This is a low-priority, defense-in-depth correctness fix rather than an actively dangerous vulnerability. The CVSS 3.1 base score is 5.5 (AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H), meaning local access, low privileges, no user interaction, and an availability-only impact with no confidentiality or integrity loss. EPSS corroborates the low urgency at 0.18% (7th percentile), there is no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit was identified - all three exploitation signals agree that real-world exploitation is improbable. The underlying defect is an accounting bug: ntfs_cluster_free_from_rl_nolock() inflates vol->free_clusters by a run's length even when ntfs_bitmap_clear_run() failed and rolled back, corrupting statfs output and the allocator's free-space gate. I assess the input CVSS AC:L as optimistic - the faulty branch only executes when a bitmap clear actually fails (e.g. ENOMEM or an I/O error after a prior non-ENOMEM error), a condition an attacker cannot reliably force, so this is better characterized as AC:H. Note also the 'Information Disclosure' tag conflicts with the CVSS vector (C:N) and the description, which describes metadata/availability corruption, not data disclosure - the tag appears mislabeled.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

A local, low-privileged user with write access to a mounted NTFS volume deletes or truncates fragmented files, triggering multi-run cluster frees. If the bitmap clear fails mid-operation (e.g. under memory pressure or on media errors), the kernel still credits the failed run's length to the free-cluster count, silently corrupting reported and enforced free space. No public exploit exists, and the trigger depends on an error condition rather than attacker-controlled input, making reliable exploitation impractical.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 08, 2026

Free-space accounting in the Linux kernel's legacy in-kernel NTFS driver can be corrupted by a local, low-privileged user with write access to a mounted NTFS volume: when a cluster-free operation spanning multiple runmap runs hits a bitmap-clear failure, the driver counts the failed run's length as freed, inflating vol->free_clusters and skewing statfs output plus the allocator's free-space gate. The issue is a local-only, low-severity (CVSS 5.5 vendor vector; independently assessed as AV:L/AC:H/PR:L with availability impact only) correctness bug affecting kernels that use the legacy ntfs driver rather than ntfs3, and it depends on an error condition such as memory pressure or an I/O/media failure that an attacker cannot deterministically force. EPSS is 0.18% (7th percentile), CISA KEV does not list it, and no public exploit identified at time of analysis.

RemediationAI

Apply the vendor-released patch by updating to a kernel containing the upstream fix commits 7eb97d8828e7758b9c81277f7802e740a800f78a or be9e89ccb8e52a3e4b67feeb03ebd8133091dc7e; EUVD maps the correction to Linux 7.2.7 and 7.3-rc2, so moving to or beyond the corresponding stable release is the primary action (see https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/7eb97d8828e7758b9c81277f7802e740a800f78a). If immediate kernel updates are not feasible, practical compensating controls are: migrate the writable volume to the ntfs3 driver (a different code path that avoids the buggy accounting, though it changes on-disk write handling and should be validated against your workload), mount the NTFS volume read-only or disable the legacy driver's write support (eliminates the cluster-free path entirely, at the cost of no write capability), or restrict write access to legacy-NTFS mounts to trusted local users. Reducing memory pressure and monitoring for I/O or media errors on NTFS volumes also lowers the likelihood of hitting the bitmap-clear failure the bug depends on. This is a defense-in-depth correctness fix rather than an actively exploited issue, and no public exploit code was identified; advisory reference: https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2026-98139.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The flaw is in ntfs_cluster_free_from_rl_nolock(), the runlist-walking helper used by the legacy in-kernel NTFS driver (tracked under cpe:2.3:a:linux:linux, i.e. mainline and stable kernels built with the old ntfs driver, which is distinct from the newer ntfs3 driver). When freeing clusters, the routine iterates the runlist and calls ntfs_bitmap_clear_run() for each run, but its accounting condition added a run's length to nr_freed - and therefore to vol->free_clusters - whenever the error-bookkeeping flag was false, which also covered runs where the bitmap clear had actually failed, for example a second run failing with the same errno as an earlier one, or any failure occurring after a non-ENOMEM error was already recorded. Because a failed ntfs_bitmap_clear_run() rolls back its partial bitmap modifications, no bits were cleared for such a run, so free space was over-reported, corrupting statfs output and the allocator's free-space gate. The root cause class is improper error handling combined with incorrect resource accounting rather than memory corruption, and no CWE identifier was assigned in the supplied data. The upstream resolution records a run's length only when the bitmap clear actually succeeded.

DescriptionNVD

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

ntfs: only count successfully cleared runs when freeing clusters

ntfs_cluster_free_from_rl_nolock() adds a run's length to nr_freed whenever the error bookkeeping condition is false, which includes cases where ntfs_bitmap_clear_run() actually failed - e.g. a second run failing with the same errno as an earlier one, or any failure after a non-ENOMEM error was already recorded. Since a failed ntfs_bitmap_clear_run() rolls back its partial modifications, no bits were cleared for that run, yet its length still inflates vol->free_clusters, corrupting statfs output and the allocator's free space gate.

Only count runs whose bitmap clear succeeded.
