Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires an authenticated session on the pfSense web GUI with two specific capabilities: privileges to modify Dashboard widget settings, AND the ability to write arbitrary files to the pfSense filesystem (e.g. dropping /tmp/test.widget.php). The attacker then supplies a widget 'sequence' value containing a relative path-traversal string (../../../../../../tmp/test) that the Dashboard's index.php resolves and include()s as a widget, executing the planted PHP. Limiting factors: it is not remote-unauthenticated - it presumes an already-privileged/near-admin actor who can place files on the box, the management interface must be reachable, and AC:H reflects the multi-step file-plant-plus-traversal setup. Affected only on pfSense Plus < 26.07 and pfSense CE < 2.9.0.

Impact

The vendor CVSS 3.1 vector (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H = 8.5) rates this High, but the raw score overstates real-world ease of exploitation. The description imposes a heavy precondition that the vector only partially captures: the attacker must ALREADY have (a) privileges to modify Dashboard settings AND (b) the ability to write arbitrary files onto the pfSense filesystem (e.g. drop /tmp/test.widget.php). An actor who can already write arbitrary files to a firewall's local filesystem is effectively near-administrative, so this reads more as a privilege/functionality-escalation-to-code-execution primitive than a remote pre-auth compromise - which is why AC:H is appropriate and why PR:L arguably understates the requirement (PR:H is defensible). No EPSS score and no KEV entry were provided, and no public exploit was identified - only a vendor patch attachment (redmine.pfsense.org/attachments/7146) and a signed advisory (pfSense-SA-26_18.webgui) exist, indicating a coordinated MITRE-reported fix rather than observed in-the-wild abuse. Net: a genuine code-execution issue on a widely deployed firewall, but the file-write + dashboard-config prerequisites and AC:H place it below drop-everything priority; patch on a normal cycle unless the management interface is broadly exposed.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An authenticated pfSense administrator (or an attacker who has hijacked such a session) who can both edit Dashboard widget settings and write files to the firewall drops a malicious PHP file such as /tmp/test.widget.php, then submits a crafted widget sequence value containing a path-traversal payload (../../../../../../tmp/test) so the Dashboard index.php includes and executes it. Because the pfSense web GUI runs as root, this yields arbitrary PHP/OS code execution on the firewall. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis; only the vendor patch is available.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 25, 2026

PHP code execution on Netgate pfSense Plus and pfSense CE firewalls can be achieved by an authenticated, highly privileged webGUI user who can modify Dashboard widget settings and plant a crafted .widget.php file on the filesystem, then set a widget sequence value containing path traversal so Dashboard index.php include()s and executes that file. The vendor rates this High (CVSS 8.5), while the independent assessment keeps AV:N/AC:H but raises the privilege requirement to PR:H, reflecting that the attacker already needs substantial Dashboard and file-write access; it is not remotely exploitable without authentication. No public exploit or KEV-listed active exploitation was identified in the provided data, and Netgate has released fixed versions.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: upgrade to pfSense Plus 26.07 or pfSense CE 2.9.0 (or later). Netgate advisory: https://docs.netgate.com/downloads/pfSense-SA-26_18.webgui.asc and upgrade guide: https://docs.netgate.com/pfsense/en/latest/install/upgrade-guide.html; the patch attachment is at https://redmine.pfsense.org/attachments/7146. Until upgrading, restrict access to the webConfigurator to trusted administrative networks and ensure only fully trusted administrators can modify Dashboard widget settings or write arbitrary files to the firewall; audit for unexpected PHP files in /tmp and other writable paths, and consider temporarily limiting Dashboard widget customization for non-essential accounts. These compensating controls reduce exposure but do not fully remove the include()/path-traversal issue; restricting GUI management access may affect remote administration workflows.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The issue is a CWE-24 path traversal in the PHP-based pfSense webGUI Dashboard. Dashboard widget sequence data is intended to reference widgets from a trusted location, but index.php does not sufficiently canonicalize or validate the supplied sequence value. An attacker who can write a PHP file such as /tmp/test.widget.php and supply a traversal sequence like ../../../../../../../../../../../tmp/test can cause the Dashboard to resolve and include() the planted file, which is then executed in the web server/PHP context. CPE data identifies netgate:pfsense_plus and netgate:pfsense_ce as affected; fixed thresholds are pfSense Plus 26.07 and pfSense CE 2.9.0. The assessed vector CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:H/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H reflects network reachability of the management interface, high attack complexity from the multi-step file-plant-plus-traversal setup, high privileges needed for Dashboard settings and file writes, scope change because PHP code runs on the firewall, and high confidentiality/integrity/availability impact. The vendor vector differs only in PR:L, but the independent assessment treats PR:H as authoritative.

DescriptionCVE.org

In Netgate pfSense Plus before 26.07 and pfSense CE before 2.9.0, a Local File Inclusion (LFI) vulnerability in the Dashboard (index.php) widget sequence data handling allows an authenticated attacker to execute arbitrary PHP code. To exploit this, an attacker with privileges to modify Dashboard settings and write arbitrary files to the pfSense firewall system (e.g., /tmp/test.widget.php) can submit a crafted widget sequence value containing a path traversal payload (e.g., ../../../../../../../../../../../tmp/test). The Dashboard will subsequently read and execute the arbitrary PHP file as if it were a standard widget.

Why It Matters

Netgate pfSense Plus and pfSense CE firewalls are affected by a high-severity vulnerability (CVE-2026-97730, CVSS 8.5) that lets a highly privileged, authenticated webGUI administrator execute arbitrary PHP code on the firewall itself. Because these appliances sit at the network perimeter and enforce core security controls such as traffic inspection, VPN termination, and segmentation, a successful compromise could hand an attacker persistent control of the organization's network edge and a stepping stone into internal systems. The attack requires pre-existing high-privilege access, so leadership should treat this chiefly as a privileged-insider and administrative-account-compromise risk rather than an external threat, and prioritize verifying that all instances are patched.
