Vulnerability Assessment
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires local operation on an XFS filesystem configured with a realtime device AND the reverse-mapping (rtrmapbt) or reflink/refcount (rtrefcountbt) features enabled, plus a realtime rmap or refcount btree tall enough that the under-counted maxlevels causes cursor allocation to be too small. Limiting factors: local access only (AV:L), the feature combination is non-default and uncommon, and the condition is explicitly gated on 'a sufficiently large btree,' so ordinary or small filesystems are not affected. UI:R in the supplied vector implies a victim action such as mounting or operating on an attacker-crafted image. |
| Impact | The input assigns CVSS 3.1 base 7.8 (AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H), but the vector and the description are in tension. The bug is that xfs rtrmap and rtrefcount |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A local user (or a crafted/large XFS realtime filesystem image that a victim mounts and operates on) drives operations against an unusually tall realtime rmap or refcount btree; the kernel allocates a cursor sized from the buggy maxlevels calculation and then indexes past its end, corrupting adjacent kernel memory or panicking. No public exploit code is identified at time of analysis, and reliable code execution or data disclosure from this out-of-bounds access is unproven. |

Out-of-bounds memory access in the Linux kernel XFS realtime reverse-mapping (rtrmapbt) and realtime refcount (rtrefcountbt) btree code stems from _maxlevels_ondisk functions that omit the inode root level when sizing in-memory btree cursors, so a tall btree can drive accesses past the end of the allocated cursor. Local attackers on an XFS filesystem that uses a realtime device together with rtrmapbt or rtrefcountbt can trigger the condition; the non-default feature combination and the requirement for a sufficiently large btree keep exposure limited, and our assessment rates it local-only with high attack complexity (CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:H) rather than the more severe 7.8 vector supplied with the CVE. Vendor patches are available in stable kernels 6.18.53, 7.2.7 and 7.3-rc3, and no public exploit code or confirmed active exploitation was identified at time of analysis.
RemediationAI
Apply the vendor-released fixes: upgrade to stable kernel 6.18.53, 7.2.7 or 7.3-rc3, or cherry-pick the upstream fix commits https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/108114437915e61e8f88d1cbcc442c3f886a347e, https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/84316cb25af95a60e655ccc8fe646bb5ad631b71 and https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/aa301322f72f82f26e4ba0826018d41388ab9896 (plus vendor advisory tracking at https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2026-97548 and EUVD-2026-86856); the commits correct the rtrmap and rtrefcount _maxlevels_ondisk helpers so the inode root level is counted and cursors are sized correctly. Where immediate kernel upgrades are not possible, the practical compensating control is to avoid the affected feature combination: create or rebuild realtime-enabled filesystems without the rmapbt and reflink features (for example mkfs.xfs -m rmapbt=0,reflink=0) and do not enable rmapbt/reflink on realtime devices, trading away reflink clones, deduplication and rmap-based online scrub/repair metadata; additionally, because the flaw is reachable only through local operation, restrict who can mount or manipulate XFS images (avoid mounting untrusted filesystem images and limit local shell or mount privileges via user namespaces/sudo policy), accepting that this reduces the attack surface rather than removing the bug.

Technical ContextAI · show details
XFS supports an optional realtime device for allocation groups dedicated to realtime files, and two metadata btrees are associated with it: the realtime reverse-mapping btree (rtrmapbt), which records which file owns each realtime extent and underpins online repair/scrub, and the realtime refcount btree (rtrefcountbt), which tracks shared extents for reflink (copy-on-write clone) and dedup operations. Each btree type exposes a _maxlevels_ondisk helper that returns the maximum number of levels a fully populated on-disk btree can have; the XFS btree cursor code uses that value to size the in-memory xfs_btree_cur structure, including its per-level pointer/state array. The rtrmap and rtrefcount implementations failed to add the extra level contributed by the inode root, causing the computed maximum to be one level short; on a btree large enough to actually require the omitted level, cursor allocation is too small and subsequent btree traversal reads or writes past the end of the cursor. The affected code lives in the XFS filesystem driver of the Linux kernel (CPE cpe:2.3:a:linux:linux:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*) and was introduced by commit 9abe03a0e4f978615a2b1b484b8d09ca84c16ea0. The input records the weakness class as N/A, so it is characterized here as an out-of-bounds memory access produced by an incorrect buffer-size/bounds calculation, with integrity impact limited to the in-memory cursor structure and availability impact from the resulting memory corruption or crash.

4DescriptionCVE.org
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
xfs: fix the rtrmap and rtrefcount _maxlevels_ondisk functions
The _maxlevels_ondisk functions are used to compute the size of in-memory btree cursors for each btree type. Unfortunately, LOLLM noticed that the rtrmap and rtrefcount versions of these functions forget to account for the inode root, which means that we could access beyond the end of the cursor given a sufficiently large btree. Fix this.
Executive ViewAI
A memory safety flaw in the Linux kernel's XFS realtime reverse-mapping and refcount btree code (CVE-2026-97548) can be triggered by a local user with low privileges on systems that use an XFS realtime device together with the rtrmapbt or rtrefcountbt features, leading to potential crashes or availability loss. Because these features are non-default and exploitation requires a tall btree and high attack complexity, the practical exposure is limited to specialized storage deployments rather than general-purpose Linux fleets. No public exploit code or confirmed active exploitation was identified at the time of analysis, but leadership should ensure affected hosts are patched to avoid disruptions in those narrow configurations.
